How do you get out of work if afraid to drive in amber alert!?

Really unsure what a legitimate reason could be!? Was already off 3 days last week poorly...!

OP posts:

Interesting that OP’s mind is on “how do I get out of work” and “what would a legitimate reason be” rather than “how might I safely be able to still work”.

Use whatever excuse you want, your days with that employer will be numbered anyway if you’re always trying to get out of work. And hopefully nobody’s actually critically relying on you turning up - eg if you’re a carer who goes out to people’s homes.

Nutriiiit · 24/01/2025 07:45

Unless your drive is vulnerable and public transport isn’t an option and neither is working from home, it will make you seem like you just want to have a day off again.

Do you dislike your job, OP? I ask because I once hated a job I’d do anything to get out of!

It might be time to look for another job? When I was in my job that I hated, it took me ages to realise that other people actually liked going to work! (I found another job I liked with working hours that suited me better.)

Allthesnowallthetime · 24/01/2025 07:47

Ask for annual leave. Or unpaid leave.

There isn't a legitimate reason for an amber alert

porridgebath · 24/01/2025 07:50

"Amber Warning: There is an increased likelihood of impacts from severe weather, which could potentially disrupt your plans. This means there is the possibility of travel delays, road and rail closures, power cuts and the potential risk to life and property. You should think about changing your plans and taking action to protect yourself and your property. You may want to consider the impact of the weather on your family and your community and whether there is anything you need to do ahead of the severe weather to minimise the impact"

We're in an Amber area and all schools are closed and trains are cancelled. All our local employers have told people to work from home if necessary.

That said if you can't work from home and don't rely on public transport you're still expected at work.

Personally I've closed my business for the day as I don't feel it's safe to be out walking dogs in 90mph gusts of wind!

This Whippet was almost blown away during a storm, her coat and ears blew up like the wings of a beetle

How do you get out of work if afraid to drive in amber alert!?
Whaleandsnail6 · 24/01/2025 07:52

Order a taxi or an uber if you dont feel you can drive.

Or ring work and explain you arent coming in due to weather warning and take it from there.

Amber weather warning suggests dont travel unless essential. I class travel to work as essential but you make your own call

A mental health day if it’s giving you anxiety?

Do employers actually allow this nonsense?

ThreeLocusts · 24/01/2025 07:55

A wild contrast between this thread and the one about going to work in a sports shop in a red zone. Look at that thread, it cites the bit of employment law that says that you can't be penalized for not showing up if you reasonably believed going to work was dangerous.

If schools are closed in your area and no trains running, then clearly the dismissive responses on here are wrong. It's not perfectly safe out there. How safe or unsafe your route to work is only you can assess.

Public transport in cancelled all day in parts of Scotland today, schools are closed, all non emergency NHS appointments cancelled, no trains. People will die today, it's wild out there.
Sympathies OP I have to go to work today today (red zone). Don't have far to drive though.

I know this already, I'm not living under a rock.
OP is an an amber zone though, which will be different.

No, it is not a thing

An amber alert isn't the same all over. There'll be considerable difference between amber on the border of red, and amber on the border of yellow.

Differentstarts · 24/01/2025 08:02

Amber go to work if it was red I'd be on your side

getthosetitsup · 24/01/2025 08:09

I bring you this post from the bus stop in an amber area.

My hair will need a brush when I get to the office, but am otherwise unscathed.

This.
Stay safe and take care

StampOnTheGround · 24/01/2025 08:12

You'd have a case if you were in a red warning area, but amber is fine.

Caravaggiouch · 24/01/2025 08:14

Bus, train, taxi, walk.

If not available request to WFH.

If not possible request AL or unpaid leave.

Don’t pull a sickie though, it’ll come back to bite you.

As this poster says - if you are in an area where the advice is don't travel, don't travel. Regardless of previous attendance, your work shouldn't be expecting you to travel if the advice is not to. If this is not the situation in your area, then either drive because it's ok to or if you don't want to, use another form of transport, because that's ok too.

Emilyjayne9421 · 24/01/2025 08:23

My boss has texted and said not to bother coming in, 30 minute commute. However I had every intention of going in. If it’s safe for you to drive, you’ll have to go. It sounds like there are deeper reasons here though.

I'm in an Amber zone, and schools and public transport are cancelled here too. We are forecast gusts up to 85mph. I certainly wouldn't be driving to work today, and there is no way I'd be able to find a taxi.

HelloMrBond · 24/01/2025 07:27

It’s a windy day, not a Ruski nuke warning. Get a grip….

Depends where she is. I'm in the Red Zone with predicted wind speeds of 100mph, plus all buses, trains and ferries are cancelled.

Lillers · 24/01/2025 08:25

It depends on a lot of things - how far away work is, whether you do a job that can be done from home, the kind of job you have, what advice your employer is giving…

If I were you, I would contact my boss and ask if there are any reasonable adjustments that could be made to my day (eg travelling earlier/later depending on the timing of the warning, doing a shorter day so you can be home before the worst of the storm and make up the hours tomorrow, work from home, take an unpaid day’s leave, etc). If they say you have to come in, ask if there’s anyone you could travel with, or what everyone else is doing regarding transport.

Cunningfungus · 24/01/2025 08:27

RedRiverShore5 · 24/01/2025 07:29

Maybe get a job you can walk to, there are many amber alerts nowadays

Damn why have I never thought of this before! All those hours sitting on a bus when I should have just chosen from the many similar alternatives at the bottom of my street.

DonnaBanana · 24/01/2025 08:28

Life is too short to go out and risk your life when it’s windy or wet. I think more employers should have a clear policy on this and let people have the day off on days like this. What is the odd day here and there? Staff safety comes first
