First we get that alarm, now Tesco is closed tomorrow. It's the end, isn't it?

She forgot taxes. Grin

That doesn't apply to everyone, offshored in bitcoin in the Isle of Man....

Angrymum22 · 23/01/2025 23:25

If it brings down trees like the last one and causes the usual power cuts, bring it on. The national grid paid out £245 in compensation for 3 hrs without power in our local area. It paid for Christmas.
I did my Tesco shop today. We have no boiler at the moment so no problem with lack of heating. We have a camping stove to make drinks and I cooked a bolognaise sauce this evening.
This is the first I’ve heard of a red warning so we are good to go.

abracadabra1980 · 23/01/2025 22:23

How do you even get the alarm? So you have to set something on your phone or is it automatically built in?

It's automatic but you can disable it - I did. Can't remember how, I googled. I'll be very sorry when the nuclear alert goes off and I'm still sitting here pressing 'refresh'.

Treesinmygarden · 23/01/2025 23:27

Cynic17 · 23/01/2025 22:42

Of course we're all going to die - nobody lives forever.
However, all this fuss about a storm is ridiculous. We live on an island. It gets windy. This has been happening for centuries. But now we infantilise people by telling them to stay at home and giving storms names. It's nonsense.

It's not "infantilising" people to take sensible precautions.

There was considerable loss of life on Boxing Day 1998, and this storm is mooted to be comparable.

It just blasted out, apocalypse style.

Go on look at it you bunch of , simply a joke, not rude, not offensive, but go on take down the whole thread because it upsets your sensibilities.

So you know how terrifying it is

Yes obviously.

Angrymum22 · 23/01/2025 23:28

Damn, I have a hair appointment tomorrow but storm not expected to be too bad around these parts.

Cece92 · 23/01/2025 23:28

Yes got the alarm whilst at work. Daughter got to twice. Got an email to say Tesco was closed. X

What I said, which MNHQ tried to conceal was simply that

not remotely offensive, not remotely inflammatory, but censored it was

I dont think it was personal 😁

Alarm here as we are on the edge of the red zone. Schools all closed tomorrow so popped to Aldi earlier to get supplies. Cream eggs, squashies and ice cream duly purchased, luckily all still in stock.

Seriously though, I’m not a fan of high winds. and the alarm was loud and I jumped out my skin, but planning to stay home with the kids and try and make the most of an unexpected day off. Don’t think we’re at risk of dying though!

I bet it's like that ridiculous hurricane that was meant to destroy the US recently. Media whip-up and fuck all to it.

Possibly but I wouldn’t be encouraging people to underestimate it as these storms always do claim some lives, might not be great numbers but for some people this will unfortunately be their last day alive

Do you mean Hurricane Helene? The one that caused 219 deaths and $78.7 billion in damage? No big deal, right? 🙄

SeaUrchinHat · 23/01/2025 23:34

I can’t possibly die yet, I have too much stuff on my to do list

Who knew a thread about Tesco being shut would awaken my biggest fear.

The only spammers I've seen on here are MNHQ, I contributed several lengthy posts on a legal matter and they took the whole thread down for heaven knows what reason - they do it all the time, which puts you off bothering!

To be fair, the last red weather warning in Scotland was in 2012 so it's not that common!

The last red warning was for the Beast from the East in 2018 if I remember correctly.

I’ve travelled down to be with my elderly aunt in Central Scotland as she was scared due to the red warning (she’s 89). Most places seem to be closed tomorrow. We’ve spent a lovely evening playing scrabble and drinking stewed tea.

I live in the Highlands and we often get really high winds, I think the red warning has scared a few people tbh.

Agree. I was hoping for the best, really.

In time, yes of course. Death and taxes my friend. The only certain things in life.

Sadly they are. My relationship with HMRC is close and not yet acrimonious. The other certainty, inevitably.

HootyMcBoobs · 23/01/2025 23:35

Central Scotland here, all four of us got the warning at once, also on work phones etc. Extremely unnerving.

Tesco's all closing as well as local shopping centre, schools, universities and colleges all closed.

All non-urgent hospital appointments cancelled.

Hoping it's not as bad as predicted, 100+ mph winds forecast in my area.

I've dug out the battery powered lanterns in case of a power cut and moved some planters close to the side of the house, but that's about it.

Similarly posts about a large Chinese selling platform are automatically deleted to make sure it's not spam. Happened to me a few months ago but that particular post was reinstated.

It's voice calls in and out that are the issue, and also can't access voicemail. If you only do texting you might well have missed it as texts seem to be going through OK. Which is fine unless you're trying to get someone on a landline.....

Ah that makes sense. I did wonder why someone that usually calls me using regular calls used WhatsApp to call today! Thanks for clearing that up for me

MorrisZapp · 23/01/2025 23:39

I was on the bus when the alarms went, it was brilliant!
