Horrible interaction in New Look

lanbro · 23/01/2025 20:12

Just bought something in New Look, interaction at the till as follows:

Till operator: what's your email for your receipt?
Me: no thanks, I'd like a paper copy please
TO: it's a digital receipt
Me: I know, but I'd prefer a paper copy please
TO: what, you don't have an email address?!
Me: of course, but I'd like a paper copy
TO: fine, it'll take a minute. Why don't you want to give me your email?
Me: I get 100s of spam emails, I don't need anymore thanks
TO: OK, no need to get angry!
Me: I'm not angry but I'm cross that you're being so persistent when I said I didn't want to (may have sounded louder than intended)
TO: don't speak to me like that! That's it I've had enough, don't talk to me!

I said fine, I'd talk to the manager, who happened to just approach the till area. Clearly backed her staff up, unsurprisingly, TO denied the part of the conversation where she'd incredulously enquired about me even having an email, and tried to withhold my paper receipt. I just stated to please give me my receipt but I was furious! Customer service non existent. I understand why they want to send receipts but me saying no should have been accepted surely, and not pushed on me, in a snotty manner

Both TO and manager late teens/early 20s, probably working for NW on not much above so I wouldn't take it further but it's really annoyed me!

YABU she was just trying to do her job
YANBU Terrible customer service

I would email New Look with all the details.

In doing so you hand them the information they wanted all along...

Honestly she is making much more difference by discussing it publicly.

This is a deliberate tactic and New Look are fully aware they are doing it. If she complains to them the response (if any) will be "In keeping with our commitment to reduce paper waste we encourage staff to issue digital receipts, which are also more convenient for customers. We are sorry to learn that you felt a member of our staff was overzealous. We note that she expressed concern to her manager that you spoke aggressively to her, and I must stress that we do not tolerate any blah blah blah"

Nothing will change.

At least this way maybe a few customers go elsewhere!

That's a very good point. Is this something happening in higher end shops (that I never go in!)?

They’re introducing this is in Dunelm too. Signs everywhere saying they are going paper free. I’ve always been offered a receipt without asking. Must be my middle aged/ don’t mess with me/ resting bitch face 😀
I do feel sorry for the staff though. Having to promote something that isn’t popular.

They make out it's about going paper free but it's really info harvesting. They want to bombard you with emails. I have to wade through hundreds every day to find the dozen work, family and friends related messages I'll actually read.

We note that a woman of a certain age* dared to express an opinion that we don't agree with And That Is Not Allowed.

(could be any age, not necessarily the usual age for the disgusting epithet "Karen")

God no! They might ask for your email but they would issue a paper receipt if you prefer.

coldcallerbaiter · 23/01/2025 21:11

Tbh just give a spare email, they can spam you but you won’t be reading it. Email is the best filing system I have ever had. Plus receipts have some sort of disappearing ink it seems, they fade it’s odd.

I’ve found email receipts and invoices particularly useful for household stuff I wouldn’t remember. The other day my kitchen tap broke and I looked up when and where I bought the last one, it was in guarantee period and when and who fitted it.

MabelMora · 23/01/2025 21:16

I ser up a 'shopping' email address. Use that one and all the shit like that goes in there.

What law says you have to give your email address to buy a TV. I bought one last year and I'm 99% sure I wouldn't have given my email address. Is that new?

My parents don't even have email addresses, does that mean they can't have a new TV

I think there has to be some record of where the TV is going to do the licence fee payment can be checked, I bought a new TV a good 10 years ago and had to give a home address then, and that was the reason given.

bostonchamps · 23/01/2025 21:17

lovemycbf · 23/01/2025 21:08

Peacocks recently told me when I was exchanging an item unless I give them my email they couldn't do my exchange.
Bloody outrageous really I had no choice but to give it

Because I'm a saddo, and because this really pissed me off, I've just had a google (and then double checked my understanding with legal eagle DH) - this isn't quite illegal as such but it is bullshit.

It's not mentioned in their returns policy (which I read, like I said...saddo), and there's nothing in consumer rights about having to provide an email address (or any personal information).

FootstepAway · 23/01/2025 21:19

Potsofpetals · 23/01/2025 20:35

I’ve set up an email address for receipts with a rude address about their practices. I don’t give a shit if they think I’m childish. It sends the right message

That's brilliant.
Nicking that idea!

Pudmyboy · 23/01/2025 21:20

I was thinking of going to New Look to look at their cheap jumpers, don't think I will bother now, so they have lost one customer because of this thread!
Plus I often pay cash for things under £50 which will definitely make me look like a fossil!

Trouble is the receipt doesn’t always come through and you have no proof you bought the items.

TV licensing stopped needing names and addresses in 2013

Newstrongerme · 23/01/2025 21:21

I don’t shop here any more because of this policy. I’m surprised it meets GDPR legislation. If it does, it shouldn’t. Why on earth do they need personal details for people to buy a T-shirt. What really did it was the smirk on the cashiers face as she said it though. It’s not about paper waste and we all know it.

Hollietree · 23/01/2025 21:21

Set up an email like

Thisismyjunkemailforshopreceits at domain dot com

idontwanttogiveyoumyemailaddress at domain dot com

Works a treat.

dixon86 · 23/01/2025 21:22

In Halfords they asked for my email so I said I hadn't got one, that totally stumped the guy

He also asked for my car's reg. I declined to give it to him

Next they'll be asking how many times I've been to the toilet and brushed me teeth in the last 24 hours

I absolutely haven't...it happened this evening

I get asked for my email address in many shops but New Look is the only one where the staff get snotty about me politely saying no thank you. I wonder if the staff get an incentive for every email address they add to the system.

Horses7 · 23/01/2025 21:24

This happens in a lot of shops - I just smile sweetly and say I don’t have an email address and it’s never questioned.

Nigellasrockyroad · 23/01/2025 21:24

My paper receipt is in my handbag, along with so many others.
If they want to do paperless receipts they need to move away from email addresses and invest and go for apps.

Edit. Not having a go at anything you said.

I've done some googling on behalf of my parents and I can't find anything about email addresses but you haven't had to give your house address since 2013 so I doubt giving an email is a thing.

Pudmyboy · 23/01/2025 21:26

Regarding lack of proof of purchase with a receipt: is there some proof of purchase from entries on bank/credit card statements?
No use if you have paid cash mind!

lanbro · 23/01/2025 20:21

Loads of places ask things that they're obviously meant to, but don't then have a go at you when you say no. I've worked in retail, I know what it's like, and I also know, that no the customer is not always right...but you're not meant to be rude when people say no!

Makes you wonder how they are incentivised? I guess this girl couldn’t give a toss about your email but maybe she has target?

whynotwhatknot · 23/01/2025 21:27

wat about elderly people who dont have one or it not sending so you have no proof of purchase its ridiculous
