Horrible interaction in New Look

Just bought something in New Look, interaction at the till as follows:

Till operator: what's your email for your receipt?
Me: no thanks, I'd like a paper copy please
TO: it's a digital receipt
Me: I know, but I'd prefer a paper copy please
TO: what, you don't have an email address?!
Me: of course, but I'd like a paper copy
TO: fine, it'll take a minute. Why don't you want to give me your email?
Me: I get 100s of spam emails, I don't need anymore thanks
TO: OK, no need to get angry!
Me: I'm not angry but I'm cross that you're being so persistent when I said I didn't want to (may have sounded louder than intended)
TO: don't speak to me like that! That's it I've had enough, don't talk to me!

I said fine, I'd talk to the manager, who happened to just approach the till area. Clearly backed her staff up, unsurprisingly, TO denied the part of the conversation where she'd incredulously enquired about me even having an email, and tried to withhold my paper receipt. I just stated to please give me my receipt but I was furious! Customer service non existent. I understand why they want to send receipts but me saying no should have been accepted surely, and not pushed on me, in a snotty manner

Both TO and manager late teens/early 20s, probably working for NW on not much above so I wouldn't take it further but it's really annoyed me!

YABU she was just trying to do her job

I was told last year that as of this year they will not be doing any paper receipts. It is such a pain in the arse having to give your email address every time you buy anything. Annoyingly you can't just give them a random email as if you need to return anything you need the bloody receipt that they will only email you!

Several years ago I bought MrG a very nice hat, online, from a Scottish "country clothing" company which shall be nameless. I have only recently got myself removed from their postal mailing list! After a couple of years I rang them up and was very politely assured that I'd now been taken off the list. They continued to arrive. I rang them up again a couple of months ago and was told whoops, somehow they had two accounts for me on their system (despite the fact that I'd only ever made one purchase) and only one had been deleted from the mailing list. Allegedly this is now fixed, but I really question it.

I have a similar problem with Hotter Shoes. How many bloody catalogues can one shoe-shop send out in a year? I don't even shop online with them. Next time I go in, I shall give them a change of address.

Oh God, is it House of Bruar? I honestly thought I'd finally escaped them when I moved house. Then suddenly they somehow found me again!

Oh my god yes. I once had to return an item and they had a well staffed sales till with almost no queue, and a separate till for returns with one staff member and about thirty people waiting. It took almost forty minutes to get to the front, and I just don't shop there anymore.

I regret it a bit because they have some nice things. New Look I could easily just never go I to again.

New look also refused to give me a paper receipt, then she typed in my email address wrong so I never received the digital receipt.
I wanted to return something and as I had no proof they wouldn’t accept my return. It was a right palava to sort out, never again.

This happens to me all the time because my name isn't spelt the most common way. Even when I spell it out. I assume some sort or autocorrect issue but who knows.

I went through the same conversation. In the end she told me not to lose my receipt like I was a child. I just laughed to myself 🤣

If this happened to me I would insist on returning the item for a refund and walk away.

Paper receipts are really important. People shouldn't have to give out their contact details every time they make a day to day transaction in a shop.

NL is one of the worst companies to work for. It's not surprising the culture is toxic. Yes they are persistent, well done for standing your ground. What about people who do not have email such as elderly etc. Staff training needed but unlikely.

I could have written this post!!! Such a similar incident happened to me in New Look, the staff member was really dismissive and downright rude when I said I didn’t want to give my email over (for the same reason, when shopping there before I gave it and within 2 days had over 6 emails from them!!)

Eventually she reluctantly gave me it and rolled her eyes- got home and the bloody security tag was on the dress. Too busy fannying about over email!

Won’t use New Look again.

I hate digital receipts. also 9/10 times they spell my email address incorrectly even after i spell it out phonetically and I don’t receive the email!

New Look vanished from round here years ago but in Dunelm I always ask for a paper receipt and get one. I don't need any more spam emails - they just want to bombard you with advertising, they don't care about you losing a receipt.

As for Zara, last time I went there the till operator didn't look at me once - I checked to make sure as I try to make eye contact and smile at some point when dealing with strangers and I never got the chance because she looked past me all the time - I'm really not that hideous!
