Horrible interaction in New Look

lanbro · 23/01/2025 20:12

Just bought something in New Look, interaction at the till as follows:

Till operator: what's your email for your receipt?
Me: no thanks, I'd like a paper copy please
TO: it's a digital receipt
Me: I know, but I'd prefer a paper copy please
TO: what, you don't have an email address?!
Me: of course, but I'd like a paper copy
TO: fine, it'll take a minute. Why don't you want to give me your email?
Me: I get 100s of spam emails, I don't need anymore thanks
TO: OK, no need to get angry!
Me: I'm not angry but I'm cross that you're being so persistent when I said I didn't want to (may have sounded louder than intended)
TO: don't speak to me like that! That's it I've had enough, don't talk to me!

I said fine, I'd talk to the manager, who happened to just approach the till area. Clearly backed her staff up, unsurprisingly, TO denied the part of the conversation where she'd incredulously enquired about me even having an email, and tried to withhold my paper receipt. I just stated to please give me my receipt but I was furious! Customer service non existent. I understand why they want to send receipts but me saying no should have been accepted surely, and not pushed on me, in a snotty manner

Both TO and manager late teens/early 20s, probably working for NW on not much above so I wouldn't take it further but it's really annoyed me!

YABU she was just trying to do her job
YANBU Terrible customer service

Where you tripped up, was when she replied ‘what you don’t have an email address!?’ The appropriate response was: ‘no - what’s one of those?’

WellsAndThistles · 23/01/2025 20:52

I hate having to say my personal information at the tills. So many weirdos nowadays listening in, I refuse unless it's a legal requirement like buying a TV.

Thistooshallpsss · 23/01/2025 20:52

I agree just look confused and say what’s an email address?? Helps to have grey hair!!

BananaSpanner · 23/01/2025 20:53

My local NL staff are fine. Pleasant and have never forced an email receipt on me.

@Knowitall69
If you're going to comment on grammar it is better to be correct in what you write...
(FYI it's 3 dots...)

The grammar isn't a problem. It's the incorrect use of idioms that get my ghost.

Brickiscool · 23/01/2025 20:47

New look near me says their till no longer prints receipts so it's email or nothing.

I have a separate email address for receipts now

I would be tempted to have a load of stuff and then before I pay ask for a paper receipt.

Then when they say read the sign, say I am off line in my personal life due to spending all my working time on computers then just walk out.

Zapx · 23/01/2025 20:55

I love Sarah Milican’s response for this!

”And your email address is…?”
” Irrelevant “
😆

lanbro · 23/01/2025 20:22

I'll just vote with my feet, it's rare enough that I go in, and plenty of other places to buy similar for my dc

In the time you've started and responded on here you could have actually made a difference by complaining though. It was really unprofessional of them both!

Mumlaplomb · 23/01/2025 20:56

I think there is a lack of customer service training now in many shops, which is a shame as they must already be struggling due to online shopping anyway. However my local new look are fine with a paper receipt and in fact very nice staff so maybe you got a bad egg.

Chumbawomble · 23/01/2025 20:56

It used to be a pleasure browsing in NL and buying all sorts of things but it's gone right off the boil. Doubt I'll ever buy anything in there, but if I do I'll insist on a paper receipt and stand my ground.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 23/01/2025 20:57

YANBU. I never give my contact details at the till, and I've run into a few shady ways of trying to get them out of me, but your experience takes it to a new level.

And as for no printed receipts? No problem. Plenty of other shops.

wildlifeobserver1 · 23/01/2025 20:57

New look also refused to give me a paper receipt, then she typed in my email address wrong so I never received the digital receipt.
I wanted to return something and as I had no proof they wouldn’t accept my return. It was a right palava to sort out, never again.

GordonLaChance · 23/01/2025 20:59

I just set up a new email address for this purpose so my main account doesn't get clogged up with spam.
It's annoying but not something I can get too worked up about

TwooMuchLabour · 23/01/2025 20:59

I hate this.

HMV do the same.

It pisses me off that they try to frame it as a saving the environment thing when literally every single item in the shop is covered in plastic, the tags, hangers, transport packaging etc!

Some thing like StupidEmailReciept@ google.com

Shade17 · 23/01/2025 21:00

I’d have told the manger that with that attitude she could now process the return, then I’d have taken her name and made a formal complaint. Fuck her!

Temporaryanonymity · 23/01/2025 21:00

I just have a separate email for receipts that I only access when I need to. Easy!

InfoSecInTheCity · 23/01/2025 21:01

Embroideryemma · 23/01/2025 20:34

It’s it illegal for them not to provide a receipt? I thought it was part of the VAT rules that they have to.

Not sure about VAT but it's in breach of GDPR unless they provide an easily accessible copy of their Privacy Policy before entering your email address into the system. No personal data should be collected or processed without the Data Subject being made aware of how that data will be processed, why and by whose. There are also rules around obtaining explicit consent to use hat data for marketing and ensuring that the data subject knows how to opt out.

None of that is covered by any of the staff at the tills so New Look are in breach constantly.

Doloresparton · 23/01/2025 21:01

Do they give gift receipts though?
Surely they have to be paper receipts.

I think you need to say
The police have told me not to disclose my email address whilst I’m in witness protection.

dynamiccactus · 23/01/2025 21:03

gamerchick · 23/01/2025 20:26

I hate the extra time than needed at the till in general. My hackles go up at being asked for my postcode. Just take money and give me a receipt ffs .

Yes it's particularly annoying at shops in railway stations when you just want to buy your item(s) and get your train.

In the NL case it seems another example of woman having an opinion = aggressive.

DreamW3aver · 23/01/2025 21:06

WellsAndThistles · 23/01/2025 20:52

I hate having to say my personal information at the tills. So many weirdos nowadays listening in, I refuse unless it's a legal requirement like buying a TV.

What law says you have to give your email address to buy a TV. I bought one last year and I'm 99% sure I wouldn't have given my email address. Is that new?

My parents don't even have email addresses, does that mean they can't have a new TV

JayniSummers · 23/01/2025 21:06

Pretty sure that's against some sort of law in relation to equality. My dad and many others of his generation doesn't have a email or want one . He can't use the internet and doesn't have the ability to learn ( he has a for years undiagnosed learning disability that means he struggles greatly with text/ reading, ) and has no interest in going online are shops really going to refuse him a receipt of purchase? Love yo see how that works out with a 82 year old man who not be New Looks demographic but is great grandad to girls who ask for vouchers regularly.

lovemycbf · 23/01/2025 21:08

Peacocks recently told me when I was exchanging an item unless I give them my email they couldn't do my exchange.
Bloody outrageous really I had no choice but to give it

TheYearOfSmallThings · 23/01/2025 21:08

Flittingaboutagain · 23/01/2025 20:55

In the time you've started and responded on here you could have actually made a difference by complaining though. It was really unprofessional of them both!

Honestly she is making much more difference by discussing it publicly.

This is a deliberate tactic and New Look are fully aware they are doing it. If she complains to them the response (if any) will be "In keeping with our commitment to reduce paper waste we encourage staff to issue digital receipts, which are also more convenient for customers. We are sorry to learn that you felt a member of our staff was overzealous. We note that she expressed concern to her manager that you spoke aggressively to her, and I must stress that we do not tolerate any blah blah blah"

Nothing will change.

At least this way maybe a few customers go elsewhere!

That is such a good idea. It will be worth it just to see the look on their face.
