Horrible interaction in New Look

lanbro · 23/01/2025 20:12

Just bought something in New Look, interaction at the till as follows:

Till operator: what's your email for your receipt?
Me: no thanks, I'd like a paper copy please
TO: it's a digital receipt
Me: I know, but I'd prefer a paper copy please
TO: what, you don't have an email address?!
Me: of course, but I'd like a paper copy
TO: fine, it'll take a minute. Why don't you want to give me your email?
Me: I get 100s of spam emails, I don't need anymore thanks
TO: OK, no need to get angry!
Me: I'm not angry but I'm cross that you're being so persistent when I said I didn't want to (may have sounded louder than intended)
TO: don't speak to me like that! That's it I've had enough, don't talk to me!

I said fine, I'd talk to the manager, who happened to just approach the till area. Clearly backed her staff up, unsurprisingly, TO denied the part of the conversation where she'd incredulously enquired about me even having an email, and tried to withhold my paper receipt. I just stated to please give me my receipt but I was furious! Customer service non existent. I understand why they want to send receipts but me saying no should have been accepted surely, and not pushed on me, in a snotty manner

Both TO and manager late teens/early 20s, probably working for NW on not much above so I wouldn't take it further but it's really annoyed me!

YABU she was just trying to do her job
YANBU Terrible customer service

@Alina3

I'm not giving them my email address.
Anyway I emailed head office

So now they have your email address anyway?

Most shops have my email address, my full name and my full address because I order things online. It's really never been a problem.

But when you order online you can usually check a box to say you don't want any marketing, no option to do that if you're giving it out in store. And besides that, if you say no thanks in store, that should be the end of the matter

I can't believe you emailed them the irony 🤣🤣🤣

I’ve experienced exactly the same in New look. Never anywhere else. Other places ask you but don’t bully you to give an email address. I was pretty firm too with the TO

It’s the same when I’ve wanted to return an item.

it’s put me off shopping there to be honest!

Use the online platform ‘Resolver’ to make a complaint. It’s created by Martin Lewis and guides you through the system. I’ve used it in the past, very effective in getting a refund, apology etc.

I’ve set up an email address for receipts with a rude address about their practices. I don’t give a shit if they think I’m childish. It sends the right message

I thought I was the only one petty enough to do this 😅

brassandswitch · 25/01/2025 16:17

God, I haven't shopped in NL for year. All the clothes are utter dog shite now. Feel like it's always so run down too and expensive!

The only things I've bought in recent years have been for the dc for school, it's not somewhere I've shopped for myself for decades! Never again though!

I had this in New Look a month or two ago. I said I didn’t want to give my email and she said they were no longer giving paper receipts due to “the environment.” Bullshit. I just kept repeating “no” and she eventually gave me a paper receipt but was really huffing and puffing and said next time, I wouldn’t be able to have one.

Haven’t stepped foot in the shop since so job done New Look. Grin

I had a very similar experience too

Mummadeze · 25/01/2025 18:06

I went to a shoe shop where they refused to sell me the shoes without my email address. Point blank said no. This was at the point of sale, not for a receipt. It was very weird.

Merida46 · 25/01/2025 21:04

I just say "No thank you." If they persist I just repeat "NO thank you." while staring at them over the top of my specs!

And New Looks’ reaction is that you can’t have a receipt then.

Plmnki · 25/01/2025 21:56

If they ask for your postcode, give W1A1AA. It’s the HQ of the BBC. When they put p this in and say dumbly “that’s the BBC” I say “yes, that’s where I work. I’m doing an investigation into retailers harvesting personal data from customers”. It’s worked perfectly to shut them up since 2016.

Asvoria · 25/01/2025 22:14

mashingwachine · 23/01/2025 20:44

I am autistic and I really struggle with giving my information to people, be it name, address, phone number or email. It's not for privacy reasons I just feel very uncomfortable saying these things to people. I wish I was able to explain it more but I actively avoid shopping in places that require that kind of interaction.

I'm autistic and I'm the same. I have a visceral feeling that if they have my information then they can harm me in some way. It's a really weird feeling.

Butterfly292828 · 26/01/2025 00:04

Take no notice that they have to give you paper receipts if you have no email address, I bought a coat & I said, before they start asking for email address- just give me a paper one .
Argos is another store that does this, pain the arse as I wanted a Christmas tree refunding, ended up ring South Africa ffs to get my money back 😩

Lambington · 26/01/2025 00:27

Tricky. If you email head office to complain then they will have your email address and will have won. Surely better to write a letter.

dayslikethese1 · 26/01/2025 00:59

I don't see how this is legal, they can't make proof of purchase contingent on being added to a marketing list. Surely its against consumer law as well as GDPR. I mean, some people don't even have email, are they just not allowed proof of purchase? BS.

dayslikethese1 · 26/01/2025 01:11

As a pp stated they have to give you access to their privacy notice and also the ability to opt out of marketing as its marketing to an individual under PECR (I believe).

Butterfly292828 · 26/01/2025 08:47

This probably needs a different thread but these store cards like nectar, Tescos, that have all your information! I thinks its ridiculous that they hike up all the products but if you have a card the products are reduced.Would it be better to sell at a normal price, then everyone can benefit- not everyone has an email, eg. Homeless people, maybe migrants.
who can see all this info? Is it the store, government, or what?

I wouldn’t be so sure- I don’t trust any of them not to sell my information on 😩

I don't think it is. Obviously when you order online, you have to give an email address (and postal address) so they can confirm the order and send it to you.

But when you go into a shop there is no need to ask for your email address. They don't need it and so they can't ask for it under the GDPR. They obviously CAN give you a paper receipt, even if they have to write it out by hand!

However, that might be changing due to new product safety regulations in the EU which apply to Northern Ireland - so that they know who to contact if there is a product safety recall. However, I don't think that consideration really applies to some fast fashion tat.

I’ve had multiple issues with Argos refunding (including a £450 washing machine) - got my credit card company to do a charge back.

So, this morning I went to the New Look in our town centre. I took a pair of socks to the tills and was greeted cheerfully. Then the TO (who looked about 13!) who asked me if I wanted an email receipt or a paper one. When I said paper she asked if I would mind moving to the adjacent till as the one I was in front of was emails only.

No fuss, no bother, a paper receipt handed over with a smile and a "Have a good day". Our NL is perhaps an exception?
