According to the BBC Axel Rudakubana is shouting in court that he is ill.
AIBU to say I couldn’t give a shit!

The thing about human rights is that they have to apply to all humans. Even the ones you don't like.

No, they dont have to at all, it's why we lock up criminals and restrict their freedom. Infringe on someone else's human rights, and you lose at least some of your own.

Giggorata · 23/01/2025 13:19

Earlier intervention might have altered the course of this person's life, but all the money has been drained from the health and social services.
Time and again, we read of parents begging for help with their SEN, mentally ill or maladjusted children, and getting nothing because there no longer is the infrastructure to support them.
We reap what we sow.

LaurieFairyCake · 23/01/2025 13:19

He seems like a really fucked up kid, he needs help

Thegoatliesdownonbroadway · 23/01/2025 13:19

No need for a sentencing hearing, just let Mumsnetters decide his fate.

ChickenShittyBangBang · 23/01/2025 13:19

You know what would have been better? Locking him up BEFORE he committed this harrowing crime.

I totally agree but how often do we hear of desperate victims being told 'we can't do anything until he does something'.

Some, sure, like freedom, but food, shelter , not being executed, those ones still apply.

wonderblocks · 23/01/2025 13:17

I've just read the timeline of court and the details of what he actually did. The kids were making bracelets at the time. I've cried. Fucking heartbreaking, those little children and their families, and all the emergency services, everyone involved. I hope he gets beaten everyday for the rest of his pathetic life.

Same it was unbearable

Vinvertebrate · 23/01/2025 13:22

Wordau · 23/01/2025 13:14

His father stopped him from going to his old school (and presumably carrying out a similar attack on pupils there) just a week or so before I believe, by begging the cab driver not to take him. This time presumably his father was not at home or didn't see the cab.

It does make you wonder though. If its father had to beg the taxi driver not to allow this vile POS to go and attack children at school, what happened next? Did the father inform the police of the attempt? Why was it left alone, allowed to receive fucking parcels of knives from Amazon?

Ofc the blame is entirely on the perpetrator, but it’s hard to conceive of this level of state neglect and incompetence. No wonder Starmer got his defence in first.

the80sweregreat · 23/01/2025 13:22

I hope he dies a nasty horrible death in the hospital corridor.
A man in wales died because the ambulance didn't come out to him in time , yet he was ' rushed ' into hospital straight away.
My heart goes out to the victims and their families. It's just beyond words

SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice · 23/01/2025 13:23

Why is it that mentally ill women dont usually attack others? Just men?

The vast majority of mentally ill people do not attack others. When they do attack others, it’s about equal between men and women.

EsmaCannonball · 23/01/2025 13:23

I've just read about the injuries inflicted on the girls who died. This was overkill. This was pure hatred. The cruel, cowardly fucker won't even get a full life term because of his age.

A 12 year old boy was knifed to death on his way home from school by another boy who had also attacked an elderly woman days before; last night a woman was stabbed to death in Plymouth; somebody has just stabbed four people at a warehouse near Croydon. I'm just sick of the apathy from the authorities about crime in this country. The Tories are too tight to spend money on the problem and Labour are the kind of gullible dupes who think criminals are the people in life who are truly hard done by.

Added to the cost of living, never being able to get a dentist or doctor's appointment, etc., I think people are increasingly bubbling with anger that they are constantly expected to take a kicking from the scumbags of society with the state doing nothing to protect them or their children.

Lentilweaver · 23/01/2025 13:23

OnlyTheBravest · 23/01/2025 13:12

@Lentilweaver Mentally ill women usually attack their families. Targeting their children.

The travesty is that mental health services remain decimated. Care in the community has spectacularly failed. We are seeing the consequences of the closure of the mental health facilities and the special schools that could have provided early intervention.

I am not convinced Axel is mentally ill at all.
I think male violence is the biggest scourge in this world and should be tackled. Though of course I have no easy solutions.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 23/01/2025 13:23

I don't think it's fair to say his parents should have stopped him / got him sectioned (unless there is evidence that they hid his issues from authorities). There are fairly regular threads on here by parents who are absolutely desperate for help, have called the police, mental health services and social services asking for help with disturbed violent teens and they consistently get nothing. There was one the other day where parents just got some leaflets on how to deal with being abused by their children. There was a thread by a lady who had something like paranoid schizophrenia the other day who begged for treatment and couldnt even get a referral even though she was engaging whilst she was in a non delusional phase, but she couldnt even get a referral because she wasnt hearing voices etc at that exact instant. I don't think it's a case of any one agency 'failing' - at the moment the system isn't designed in a way it can help until someone does something absolutely awful, even if all the signs are there, due to sustained under funding. Not quite the question you asked but it makes me angry that no doubt there will be an enquiry but the whole mental health system needs an overhaul and much more resources.

WillimNot · 23/01/2025 13:23

The more I read about that animal the angrier I get.

His parents should be tried alongside him, they knew and did nothing. And what about the taxi driver who his father apparently begged not to take him as he was armed who took him anyway? Has this individual been located?

It really annoys me that people like me who work bloody hard will be paying for this scumbag and no doubt for his waste of space parents to be kept safe too. Meanwhile not one of those children, their teacher nor the brave guy who came from his office to help were offered protection because poxy Prevent and the usual useless services did nothing and made excuses.

I think we all have to come to terms with the fact we aren't safe anymore. Too many morons shout racism the minute prevent actually does something. The police are useless. Social services too busy picking on parents who are struggling due to money worries. Schools too scared to act in fear of reprisals, and when they do, as in the case of Sara Sharif, they are ignored and the parents remove them from school.

I for one have had enough. Those children were failed. Yet again another case of "lessons will be learned" which never are.

And then the media wonders why the likes of bloody Farage are gaining popularity.

the80sweregreat · 23/01/2025 13:24

Esma. People are angry
Yet nothing is ever done is it ?
No wonder people are fed up :(

TheCrenchinglyMcQuaffenBrothers · 23/01/2025 13:24

zerogrey · 23/01/2025 12:55

What gets me is that his obsession with violence was RIGHT FUCKING THERE, and it wasn't enough for people to act. His parents could have done something, but no. Now three girls are dead.

His father is a black belt in karate for god's sake. Why on earth he didnt put his foot down and do something to stop his son is beyond me, and no I don't mean kick the shit out of him.

His parents called the police to their home five times, so hardly sounds like they didn’t try. What the fuck happened with the police on those occasions, who knows. Which is why there needs to be an inquiry because as the trial isn’t going ahead, we won’t find out.
Sounds like there was plenty of official agencies involved and yet he was still free to commit this heinous crime.

LlynTegid · 23/01/2025 13:24

Mohammed Al Fayed claimed to be ill, and justice never happened. At least in this case it is being done.

Do you have evidence to back this claim that you can post? I'd be very interested to learn more about this, specifically the claim that mentally ill men and women commit violence at the same rate.

murasaki · 23/01/2025 13:24

At least he pled guilty, unlike the Nottingham man who killed 3 people. I remain unconvinced that he's mentally ill too.

justasking111 · 23/01/2025 13:24

JHound · 23/01/2025 12:33

I would not be surprised if he is. Mentally.

I assume this is for sentencing? He already pled guilty.

Wouldn't be surprised if he ends up in Broadmoor. Open ended sentences there

I hope justice is served by his fellow prisoners.

His father found detailed diaries where that creature had planned a massive school atrocity. He knew he had bought a weapon online because apparently he begged the taxi driver not to take him that day. He knew he was thrown out of school for battering a child who had never spoken to him with a base ball bar.

They knew, they did nothing.

Saschka · 23/01/2025 13:26

Growsomeballswoman · 23/01/2025 13:04

I've looked it up. You cant tube feed someone without permission from them

You can if you feel it is a consequence of their mental illness, or if they don’t have capacity to make their own decisions so you are feeding them in their best interests (obviously I am talking about patients here not prisoners, but medicolegally it’s no different).

Having said that, trying to get a feeding tube into somebody who doesn’t want one is a barbaric process. I assume a prisoner would be restrained or sedated during the procedure, then restrained to stop them pulling it out. Not something you would do lightly.

Messedupovulation · 23/01/2025 13:26

Iwanttoliveonamountain · 23/01/2025 12:46

I had thought that after examination, it was decided that he is not mentally ill and he hasn’t claimed to be but will be happy to be corrected

He clearly is mentally ill. No person with a normally functioning mind would do what he did. He needs to be locked up for the safety of others for his whole life. There’s clearly no chance of rehabilitation.
