AIBU to be fed up with all the Keir Starmer threads

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 22/01/2025 17:56

It's giving me flashbacks to 2016 when there were about 20 threads a day saying nonsense like, "AIBU to be concerned about the EU's plans to conscript everyone into an EU wide army?"

Just put a sock in it, already.

@BIossomtoes

Care to respond to this?

I wish they would! I really do.

I want to be proven wrong, shown that I’ve misunderstood or misinterpreted things.… I have no wish to detest the Government. I want to trust and support them! I voted for them in good faith and with hope. I want that restored…

Please give me reason to… Give me and others reason to hope! I don’t want to feel this for the next 4 1/2 years!

BIossomtoes · 25/01/2025 12:56

No. I’d only be asinine again. You two can have the thread.

Really? I was giving you an opening here.

I genuinely want to be convinced otherwise, and that I’m being too gloomy and unfair…

twistyizzy · 25/01/2025 13:00

Labour used to be the party of blue collar manufacturing workers. Now they only care about public sector and have no clue about the private sector, or how businesses + the economy work. This incarnation of Labour party have just proven this point spectacularly.

It’s a cliche, I know, but the principle of Occam’s Razor, really does apply in this case.

The points made by you and me, and some other excellent posters on MN, are on point. We all have first-hand experience in various areas, and are well qualified to comment.

The news and dataflow is coming thick and fast now - it tells a compelling story of a Government making an utter horlicks of the economy (in this case), with its impact on the rest of the country.

That’s it.

Tryingtokeepgoing · 25/01/2025 14:01

As a suggestion, could we perhaps remove the words “all”, “the” and “threads” from the title of this thread and then bring it a close if no one can explain how the governments actions to date form a coherent plan, never mind policies or strategy?

OneLemonGuide · 25/01/2025 14:53

To use a football analogy, it’s like the Labour Government are 2-0 down after only ten minutes… An appalling start, but potentially recoverable as many matches over the years have proven. As a “fan” of the UK, although I’m feeling disillusioned with the team, I hope to god they come good.

However, this will only happen the team re-groups, re-focuses and determine to avoid the mistakes they made in the opening 10 minutes…

Unfortunately, if the posts @BIossomtoes
@AgnesX and@ilovesooty are anything to go by, the team is saying “don’t worry, it’s only 10 minutes in, and it’s all the refs fault we’re down anyway”… which is the best, possible, way to lose the match by a massive margin.

If actually they’re agents for Reform, they’re doing a decent job!

I gave you credit for having some intelligence because of your job even though I don't agree with your political persuasion

Shame that you then spoil it with infantile insults.

Some posters are as ideologically-wedded to their political dogma, as is their beloved party.

One can only surmise that they are simply ‘talking their book’, perhaps because they ‘suffered’ under one of the previous Tory governments, or because they are now in receipt of Labour’s largesse, via the benefits system, or a recent public sector pay hike - who knows.

One thing is abundantly clear - they will not be deterred, even in the face of a well-supported argument, or compelling real-time data.

Only when they fall silent, even temporarily, can you be certain that they are shit out of arguments.

What exactly was the “infantile insult”?

If it’s that those who seem to blithely cheerleading for Labour and tribally dismiss anyone who expresses an alternative opinion, are actually helping Reform whether they are aware it or not, then you seem to be proving my point!

Personally I don’t want Reform to be voted in in 5 years. I’m exasperated that you can’t you see that your attitude is helping that very thing to happen!

Good points, though I disagree that some posters are ideologically wedded to their political dogma… because as far as I can, Labour seems to be devoid of any particular dogma!

The recent watering down of attempts to tax non-doms, and their reneging on key environmental pledges in relation to airport expansion (whether you agree with them or not) mean that their policies, insofar as they have them, are almost indistinguishable from the Tories that they replaced! Even most of the public sector haven’t seen any benefits - my organisation certainly hasn’t!

It’s worse than that…. rather than being wedded to ideological dogma, which I would have a degree of respect for, they’re just wedded to their political tribe “Labour”, who can seemingly do know wrong, because, well, they’re “Labour”…

And anyone who disagrees must therefore be stooges of the evil twins, the Tories and Reform. They assume I must be part of them, when I’ve repeatedly said I’m not!

Interestingly I listened to a podcast earlier from Owen Jones… a seasoned left-winger, virtually the polar opposite of Nigel Farage. Yet his scathing analysis was almost identical to mine, despite having different perspectives.

Labour just seem to be a blander, less competent (incredibly!) and smugger (even more incredibly!) version of the Tories! If that’s not an open invitation to Reform at the next election, I don’t know what is!

More than 10,000 millionaires left the UK in 2024 and, according to the Adam Smith Institute – on average they would have paid nearly £400,000 in tax each.

From these exits, the Exchequer lost as much in revenue as would have been paid by around 500,000 average taxpayers.

I recall the usual backlash from pro Labour at any mention of this

It looks like Reeves and Starmer know as little as posters on a parenting site

Labour despise those who dare to have aspirations to better themselves, financially - that goes to the heart of many of their policy decisions.

Better that the majority are poorer - that’s their twisted philosophy.

EasternStandard · 26/01/2025 10:12

@MyNameIsX I heard someone put it well, Labour have bet the house on growth

And now they have killed it through policy but are lost. It's why they peddle a headline each week on how they might try to get it back

Reeves is an idiot to think anti growth policies will bring the thing they need most

Agreed.

And when they fail to deliver any meaningful growth, they will be forced to introduce a fresh bout of austerity (doubtless spun with a different name).

Then we can see just how loyal their electorate really are.

Austerity is already being enacted, by default, in social care and other areas be use policy decisions are taking funding/away from the sector.

Well there’s probably a lot more threads to come after watching Keir Starmer on the news last night sitting next to the orange clown Trump. Incompetent pair of fools. Trump with his fake orange tan and Starmer with his fake voice. Yuk!

You’re a lone voice. Even the posters who are normally most critical of Starmer are reluctantly recognising his statesmanship this morning. I’ve actually been impressed by the fair mindedness, it’s refreshing.

Next to Trump pretty much anyone would look statesman like ;)

Macron did a far better job IMO, though I am in France and the European view of Starmer is less than positive… I hope he can help temper the excesses of Trump though.

I thought he did well. He must have hated to have to sit next to the trump but he came across very calm and in control

“Statesmanship” and Starmer are unusual in the same sentence. Thanks for the laugh though arse licking is more appropriate!

Hilarious and cringe when he couldn’t answer if he could deal with Russia alone. He looked like a startled kid in a sweet shop not knowing what to fucking say or do next. Embarrassing for Britain to have this shower representing us on the international stage.

You clearly have no concept of how diplomacy or soft power works. It’s going to have be kid gloves for the next four years with Trump. Bull in a china shop tactics would be catastrophic.
