AIBU to be fed up with all the Keir Starmer threads

It's giving me flashbacks to 2016 when there were about 20 threads a day saying nonsense like, "AIBU to be concerned about the EU's plans to conscript everyone into an EU wide army?"

Just put a sock in it, already.

Culpability for Brexit, if you choose to call it that, has its roots on both ends of the political spectrum.

In terms of the electorate voting when did anyone say otherwise?

‘Despite the rise in the composite index, employment levels fell for the fourth month in a row according to the survey, with businesses often linking this to rising cost pressures. S&P Global said that, with the exception of the pandemic period, the rate of job losses signalled by the PMI over the past two months was the highest since the global financial crisis in 2009’

This is a stark reminder that we had the fastest growing economy in the G7 in July last year. Truly shocking, and even the usual suspects who reflexively cheerlead for this awful government should be very concerned, particularly as things seem likely to get much worse once the NI increases actually take effect…

OneLemonGuide · 24/01/2025 18:04

ilovesooty · 24/01/2025 13:01

They could probably afford to cover increased rates of employer NI and higher wages to their employees as well. Instead they choose to announce job losses.

You don’t seem to understand how company finances work. If companies retain staff at the expense of profits, we’d have increasingly uncompetitive and unproductive businesses, leading to soviet style stagnation and economic failure… And it would be the poorest that would suffer most.

Companies aren’t charities providing jobs for staff, nor should they be…

What do you do? I mean in terms of government interacting with civil servants (I'm supposing that you are one) ?

How do the opposition and new policy makers learn to interact with the CS? This isn't meant to be cheeky but in terms of what are your expectations in terms of behaviour?

I have a very senior role in finance at a large local authority.

In terms of my experience so far, and why I’m so pissed off with the Labour Government, here goes:

  1. They didn’t come into Government with a proper plan. Compared to Labour in 1997, who hit the ground running and generated optimism and energy, this Government have done the opposite…lots of “reviews” and not much real action. And what they have done is tepid and cautious. It’s as though they were so focussed on achieving power, they didn’t have a clue what to do when they eventually got it! It’s all slogans, no substance…

  2. The actions they have taken haven’t been thought through, and many are breathtakingly incompetent (either that of they really don’t give a shit)… Take Social Care. They’re effectively reducing money for the sector with the rise in National Insurance contributions… Even the Tories recognised and gave increases in funding, even if it was insufficient. It especially makes no sense given the money they’re planning to put into the NHS… much of which will just get wasted if bed blocking increases due to social care failure.

  3. They’re intransigent. They could have recognised the issue with social care for instance, and re-worked the local government finance settlement, like the Tories did to their credit the year before when it was clear there would be a major crisis if they didn’t… but it’s like they have to prove a point and are more afraid of losing face than doing the right thing.

I had no time for the Tories, and was delighted to see them go, but seriously, so far, incredibly, Labour are worse! It’s heartbreaking…

I wish those Labour cheerleaders on this thread and elsewhere would recognise this, and pressure their MP friends to do better, rather than simply get defensive and dismissive of anyone who expresses dissatisfaction.

Ik some claim about the fastest growing G7, we had it and they promptly killed it

In any case beyond the usual support the poll today looks particularly dire for them

But that’s precisely how I see it - they have been out for 14 years, and therefore lack ‘match fitness’ - an assertion seemingly supported by @OneLemonGuide in their earlier post.

Yes, an experiment - appropriate, I think.

1997 Labour had been out of power for 18 years… they were match fit. There’s no excuse for this shower.

The ‘97 Government were Labour ‘lite’, and did not make the number of unforced errors this ‘shower’ have to date.

Also, there is a competence arbitrage - Blair had a working political antenna, and a functioning cabinet, and were not ideological.

Now we have Reeves, Rayner and Lammy et al.

OneLemonGuide · 25/01/2025 12:08

Fleetheart · 24/01/2025 04:41

Err…. surprise surprise - cutting costs is always top of any Finance Director’s list, scarcely a novelty, and certainly not in recent history.

No, speaking from direct first-hand experience, generating a profit and remaining solvent are the priorities…. Costs are only cut when they do not contribute to an equivalent or greater revenues being generated.

Companies that continue to incur costs that don’t support the bottom line go bust- simple as that.

OneLemonGuide · 25/01/2025 12:33

No, it's just stop the incessant whining and behaving like a cheap version of the Sun.

The current govt have had 6 months to clear up the crap that they'd been handed. The world has moved on in that 6 months and you expect a miracle.

I really don't know what people like you expect

I don’t expect miracles. I don’t expect everything to suddenly get better. I accept that any new Government needs time…

However…

I expect competence and coherence, and economic and tax policies that help rather than make matters worse;

i expect an actual plan and action (even if it’s too early to see tangible results), not endless slogans and sound bites… this Government is a world away from the dynamism of its 1997 predecessor;

i expect coherent policies that are in line with their stated values… a party that castigates the “cruel” Tories and promises to be champion of the vulnerable and yet removes winter fuel allowance from elderly on a state pension of just £11,500 per annum (when there were 100s of other things it had the opportunity to do) is bizarre.

I also expect those who champion Labour to do a much better job of defending themselves, rather than to be unrelentingly and condescendingly dismissive of concerns. At least when arguing with those on the Greens on the left or Reform on the right, there’s a genuine attempt to argue the case, even if I might strongly disagree.

SleepToad · 25/01/2025 12:48

True blue Tory here, boarding on reform...but even I know that the torys had to go. Mishandling brexit, the nhs, not a clue how to drive the economy.

But I am.shocked how Labour have come in. They had 14 years to come up with a plan, some policies. Instead they look like they've been asked to build the space shuttle out of a cardboard box and a box a lego.

First thing they do is remove money from pensioners. Second tax on public schools...really, that's all going to change the course of the country.

surely Labour, that's a Labour government , you know left wing, should be looking to make sure companies like Amazon and Facebook actually pay tax (which should be easier now we are a standalone country).
They should be supporting worker's and creating jobs..ni increases limit the jobs market

I am also shocked that 2 of his cabinet have had to go already for being somewhat less than suitable to be a minister. Plus we have repeated claims that the chancellor has exaggerated her qualification for the job.

I've always stated we as individuals need to pay more tax. The country can't be run without a decent tax revenue, but there is a need to ensure that smaller companies are able to employ and grow. Amazon et al are not paying their way so should be made to pay their share of not be able to trade in the UK

Sherbs12 · 24/01/2025 12:09

Socialist experiment? How so?

I agree with you on this…. Labour is not socialist… despite wanting to expand the power of the state.

But also…

It’s policies are decidedly not pro-business… despite repeatedly saying it’s pro-growth

Labour are investing in the NHS, but they’re extracting hundreds of £millions from social care to do so (something the Tories never did)

They say they’re the party of the vulnerable, yet they are removing winter fuel allowance from pensioners receiving just £11,500 per year

The Government are a bunch of headless clueless chickens who don’t seem to stand for anything, or have any clear plan for achieving anything. They’re career politicians who seem interested in power for its own sake (how else can you explain the lack of any real plan or concrete actions, but the mountain of new reviews instead)

Tragically for the UK, they have been exposed as thoroughly incompetent… thinking running a Government would be like running a glorified Student Union.
