To be alarmed at Starmers plans

Anybody else worried about his ongoing plans for deeper involvement in Ukraine. In an interview yesterday he said he intends to send our troops out there. Surely this would mean we’d be at war with Russia! Anyone else very concerned.

"other lefty MNetters who think it’s “about time” we got more involved and sent working class people’s thick kids (not your uni darlings) off into a war zone."

If that was directed at me, my eldest has their fitness test for the Marines tomorrow...........

That’s a very tough selection process. I hope it goes well for him.

A Ukrainian here. Actually, it was completely unprovoked. Until 2014 we lived peacefully and minded our own business. All we wanted was more European integration and to move away from Russia. Clearly, that pissed Putin off, so he decided to invade the east and annex Crimea, both in violation of any kind of international law and in breach of the Budapest memorandum signed by Russia US and UK in 1994. (For the record, Ukraine had no intention to join NATO before Russia's first invasion in 2014) The west was "deeply concerned" for 8 years until the full scale invasion in 2022 and continued to fill Putin's coffers with gas ans oil money. Unfortunately, Ukraine can't win this war on its own, Russia's too big and armed to its teeth. But if the world stops supporting Ukraine it'll cease to exist and Russia will pose an even bigger threat to the rest of Europe as a result.

So apparently the number of millionaires leaving the country has increased 157% in 2024 vs. 2023 and Reeves is moving to a "more generous phase out of tax benefits for non doms".

So the plan tax the rich and they are going to pay for everything.

That worked well then.

As I have maintained before, the middle class/working people are the only group from which significant taxes can be raised. The wealthy avoid them. The poor have no money to pay.

Worth a quick read of the report quoted by the BBC. The immigration of millionaires into UK has been slowing since Brexit and those leaving appear to be non-Brits. Of course, taxing them will make UK seem unattractive compared with other countries. But in all likelihood they move between properties globally, anyway. The report adds that the centi-millionaires (worth more than $100m) are moving out of cities to the country. So they aren't all leaving.

So we just let it happen do we?
where will Putin attack next he just keeps prodding and pushing to see what he can get away with. A typical bully and the only way to deal with a bully is to stand up to them.

DeadSpace3 · 23/01/2025 18:45

We should have been actively involved from day one. The shorter the war, the less lives are lost. The EU dragging their heels has cost tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of lives unnecessarily.

As for being afraid of Russia? 😆

Laylay100 · 23/01/2025 19:21

I'm more concerned with his involvement in Israel and the UK being complicit in their war crimes.

As Ukraine is the exposed Eastern flank of Nato we must go, as will France and others

I have been following the conflict in Ukraine since 2014. It is not as straightforward as the papers and other MSM lead us to believe, i.e. it's not entirely unprovoked and it's not "all Russia's fault" as they tell us. It's much more nuanced than that, and I must say I have been quite concerned that there is not at the very minimum more people in the government that at least call for some caution! Everyone is constantly running around all guns blazing calling for more and more offensive weapons to be sent to Ukraine and more and more money to keep this war going. Unfortunately, this only means more deaths and more destruction for Ukraine and brings us closer to the brink of either WWIII or a nuclear war and frankly I am not that sure that anyone in the government fully comprehends the implications. It's been too long since WWII and it's as if everyone has forgotten what it means to live through such a horrific event!

So what you saying we should be going to war coz world was 2 was ages ago now?there has to be a war?for what, what would be the purpose of England going to war really?I personally think Ukraine should just do the right thing and end it by saying here ffs have it,but no I get the principle of it of why he isn't doing that as that's giving in,but come one too many life's are been lost and for what?I don't want my kids getting brought up during a ww do you?or grandkids,it's awful,we don't deserve to go to war and if your that clued up on wars you will know its actually the kings say so weather we go to war or not not starmer, why the hell do you think it's been to long since a war,who ever wants to go to war apart from idiots and people who think there top dog

Iceboy80 · 23/01/2025 20:44

Damn right you should be, the man and his party have lied on just about everything but more fool the idiots who voted for Labour.

Not only the situation in Ukraine but in a few more years this country will be unrecognisable and each and everyday more unsafe for our children.

pollymere · 23/01/2025 23:26

We are already at war with Russia.

laraitopbanana · 24/01/2025 07:47

RandomButtons · 22/01/2025 17:13

I reckon Trump will pull resources, so Starmer probably needs to show he’s behind Ukraine, not that it will do enough without America unless the whole EU pools resources.

Yeap…if the UK says something like this. That tells you the intentions of the U.S.A

It is entirely unprovoked and an illegal action on the part of Russia. Putin said that Ukraine is not a country and is an illegitimate breakaway part of Russia, which he intends to "take back."

Unfortunately, you have chosen to believe conspiracy delusionists, liars, charlatans and supporters of Russia.

Then there are foreign flagged ships drifting up and down European sea routes with anchors aweigh.

As long as they have anchors aweigh, all is fine. It's when they're dragging them over the seabed that there is a problem.

CurlewKate · 24/01/2025 08:59

I thought the protection of our seas was a Brexit Benefit?

nomoretoriesforme · 24/01/2025 09:16

It will cost us - UK taxpayers 3bln a year. Starmer has signed the agreement on all our behalf. Prepare to be taxed more

I’m worried about being in any kind of war, DD is joining the Royal Navy as an aircraft handler and likely to working on an aircraft carrier.
We’re still proud and supportive of her choosing this path. Big hugs to all the armed forces mums

Cheaper than not stepping in don’t you think?

Or should we just abandon Ukrainians to their fate and allow war to advance towards our doorstep.

I think we should have referendum and let the public decide.

After fucking up the last one so spectacularly I hope never to see another referendum in my lifetime. You show a profound lack of understanding of how our political model operates. We have representative government here.

OliveOil2 · 22/01/2025 19:16

I'd hazard a guess that any back and forth between Trump and Putin has already been rehearsed and scheduled and pre-planned. Regarding Starmer, you have to remember that though is relatively new to the post of prime minister, the people working in the military and ministry of defence are not new, and they will be working very closely together. Better or worse than anyone else, who can say, but I'd not look to most newspapers to inform my opinion of how well Starmer is or isn't doing. We're already at war, the constant technological attacks, ships, planes, drones, the countries funding Russia, we're already well and truly in it.

He’s already been in post for 6 months and was leader to the opposition for several years. Hardly new to the role 🙄

Hardly, they only won 33% of the vote in the election. If we had another election tomorrow I wouldn’t be surprised if they lost given the absolute shambles of the last 6 months. Nothing they do ever seems to be for the good of the UK. I dread to think what things will be like by the time they get voted out in 2029.
