To wonder if Starmer can survive the vibe-shift?

Trump has been going hell for leather since his inauguration it seems, things are changing fast - Trump likes the UK, but he doesn't like Starmer. Starmer seems out of sync with the changing tide, and seems (to me) to get it wrong and make it worse everytime he opens his mouth. AIBU in wondering how long Starmer can hang on?

I think the government is only allowed to accept a delay of 12 out of the 16 requested.
That's still a awful lot of voters unable to vote.

I live in Wales where there won't be any council elections. The big date here will be May 2026 at the Senedd elections where Welsh Labour will (I hope) be decimated.

The only possible theoretical replacement for Starmer that I can think of is Yvette Cooper, since she is one of the very few cabinet members with more than 6 months experience of running a country.

concerns for the disability coming in Spring because Osborne was worse

You’ve seen nothing of the sort. If any proposal is made to threaten disability support I’ll be first at the barricades. If you’re not prepared to have a discussion with me, maybe stop with the lying attacks @ByMerryKoala?

I have family in Wales who say that both Plaid and Reform are doing well there. It will be interesting to see what happens.

If they do replace Starmer with Cooper, I'm hoping she gives her husband a job as Chancellor. He can't be any worse than Reeves!
West Streeting is the only one I can think of, but if the hard left oust Starmer I doubt they would accept Streeting.

Why was your response to the reforms coming to welfare payments in spring met with a response about Cameron and Osborne? That won't be any consolation to people who will find themselves at the mercy of cuts made by Reeves? It won't be hyperbole to say that we expect to see a dismantling of how things currently are. And when that happens I hope you are at the front leading criticism, god knows you are persistent enough.

Do you have a link to what is changing in the Spring please? I am hearing a lot of talk on this about what might or might not happen but haven't seen anything concrete that sets out the changes.

I think Labour said it would publish its own response to the Tories consultation on benefits, but haven't seem anything. Maybe I missed it.

PandoraSox · 27/01/2025 10:24

This confirms there is no firm policy as yet, so really would be interested to see your source @bymerrykoala that there will be changes in the Spring. Maybe you mean the green paper?

"But a green paper with more detail on the future of the DWP is set to be released in Spring"

Have you read that article and come to the conclusion that there won't be any cuts to benefits?
It screams the opposite to me.

Julen7 · 27/01/2025 10:31

Rachel Reeves said at weekend there would be detailed plans “next week”, ahead of the green paper.

We’ll put it to bed when it stops.

But it's not happening. Yes, Labour are getting a pasting because they are making a complete hash of a lot of things.
You are completely deluded if you honestly can't remember BJ or Cameron on Truss being criticised in the press
The nonsense that the press are somehow to blame is just a convenient smokescreen to deflect from actually addressing the issues.
As is 'they've only been in power six months'.
Back on election day, many thought there would be changes well before six months, but the goalposts are ever moving. It won't be long before posters are arguing 'but they've only been in power a year', then two, then three
Then it will be 'they can't dismantle 14 years of Tory disasters is five years' and so on.
Excuse after excuse.

Xenia · 27/01/2025 10:40

Labout has removed 16k illegals and we have about 600k in London so unless people start to see a much bigger shift and are listened to I don't think Labour will win the next election.

No. I have read it and concluded that the government will consult on proposed changes and cuts.

I am with @blossomtoes. I will be the first to protest against any cuts to disability benefits and I think a lot of Labour's own backbenchers would too. Osborne found out the hard way that there are lines that can't be crossed when it comes to this issue.

I must say I do find it distasteful that some people seem to be hoping for Labour to shit on disabled people, just so they can crow about how terrible the government is.

To address the op, the US is experiencing a massive rise in optimism. Trump brings hope and pride for the US. You may not like the way he does things, but there’s a clear commitment and goal - MAGA
And he stands up for Americans, he love America.

Starmer is the polar opposite. He calls half the population right wing bigots, he favours immigrants, he is doom and gloom and hopelessness. Talks down the uk constantly. He totally kills entrepreneurship and enterprise, and of people getting wealthy through achievement and is only concerned with union backed public sector workers and maybe immigrants?

You can’t underestimate the power of optimism and some national pride

When exactly did Starmer call ‘half the population right wing bigots’…?

Thanks. Will look out for that.

My guess is that ESA may change. They may tinker round the edges with PIP but it would be hard to make significant changes as the DLA to PIP roll out still hasn't finished.

Well, some posters wish for a new Falklands to help with Labour’s ratings .

Not exactly in good taste now, is that?

I think that's a bit of a stretch. But if we are mudflinging, I could say there are plenty of posters on other threads rubbing their hands together about children being removed from their schools and family farms being decimated. But I suppose they are 'The Rich' so they don't count, obviously.

Yes I think ESA too although could be quite wrong as she hasn’t said.

It really isn't a stretch. Plus plenty of posters on MN see the disabled as scroungers, anyway. So the concern is faux.

I personally haven't rubbed my hands with glee at any of the cuts Labour has made so far. In fact I think the WFA decision was bad and I am a bit on the fence with the farmer's IHT. I think there will be changes there.

BIossomtoes · 27/01/2025 10:55

But that’s the thing, isn’t it? Everyone is guessing. It might be sensible to wait for a concrete proposal before we all get incensed.

Julen7 · 27/01/2025 10:53

Yes I think ESA too although could be quite wrong as she hasn’t said.

I think the rules may change for new claimants and the extra money awarded to those in the support group might be phased out. Which would be a really bad decision. But we will see.

What I don't think will happen is that existing claimants will have benefits taken away. But again, we will see.

ByMerryKoala · 27/01/2025 11:03

Who's hoping that Labour will shit on disabled people @PandoraSox ?

When Starmer is in the Sun saying that the government will be ruthless with cuts (20th Jan) and that it has the balls to cut benefits (17th Jan) maybe you think that it's a tweak but I don't think anybody else is under that impression.

Disability benefits cuts would be 'devastating', Labour warned https://search.app/fK3QXNfmVonVePis6

Well the Tories don’t do so hot in that area did they and they had 14 years as opposed to a few months to be judged. They also pretty much had immigration as their only policy and relied on an expensive vanity project and sound bites to sort it which failed massively so let’s maybe wait a while. 😊

We will have to disagree. I can definitely see some posters are really hoping that Labour shit on disabled people. So that they can say "this is what you voted for" and have a good crow about it. I don't think they will give a toss about how devastating it will be. Obviously I will not name names as that would get me deleted or suspended!

I had reservations about voting Labour because of some of the things Liz Kendall said before the election. I will be very pissed off if my reservations are proved right.
