Someone spreading race hate. Report to employer?

emma91july · 20/01/2025 13:58

Someone I know is spreading race hate (as well as Islamophobia - separate kind of hate, I understand) on social media. I have "reported" some of most recent posts on Facebook (before blocking the person). Facebook agreed that the posts breached their standards and have notified the person. I understand from others that this person continues to post hate-mongering stuff on Facebook.
They work in a very "customer-centric" in the heart of a very diverse community. Would you report this person anonomously to their employer? There is a whiteblowing procedure in place. Their employer is very hot on equality, diversity, respect for all etc.

OP posts:

No, I would not. I wouldn't do anything anonymously. It's despicable.

Adamante · 20/01/2025 14:01

Would I try to destroy someone’s whole life and ability to provide for themselves and their family based on a few posts on social media?

In a word, no.

iwishihadaname · 20/01/2025 14:01

Yes report

EmmaMaria · 20/01/2025 14:02

I would report it, yes, but not anonymously.

Mysteryfemale · 20/01/2025 14:04

Are these public or private FB posts? What settings are they using?

And crucially are they linked to their job on FB? "Jane Racist, Comms Director at Sprockets PLC" vs Jane Racist makes a big difference as to whether employer can do anything anyway.

Babadookinthewardrobe · 20/01/2025 14:05

No. It’s none of your business and reporting anonymously is very cowardly. If their colleagues, customers or employees experience any problems they can report it themselves.

MissyB1 · 20/01/2025 14:11

A lot of employers have a social media policy, and other employees would be the people to report if they see fit. If you are not a member of that work place then it’s not for you to report to them.

Everanewbie · 20/01/2025 14:15

How bad are the posts? One persons Islamaphobia and racism is another person's tough questions, satire, challenging norms and voicing sincerely held beliefs in our traditions of freedom of expression. Are you the arbiter of where the line is? Do you have the option to block/hide the posts rather than bring this persons life around them?

Reported.

TeabySea · 20/01/2025 14:26

It would depend on exactly what they were saying/sharing.
For those saying it's putting someone's job on the line, then that's the fault of the person being racist, as anyone technically could report them.
If their profile shows their employer then I'd say yes. If their posts are genuinely inciting hatred then yes. But not anonymously.

Completely unnecessary, and adds nothing helpful.

Mainoo72 · 20/01/2025 14:27

No, I wouldn’t. Just ignore & get on with your life.

2bubsandme · 20/01/2025 14:31

Report. No room in society for racists, especially considering Islamophobia is RIFE.

JRSKSSBH · 20/01/2025 14:32

Wow, who appointed you as commandant of racial harmony?? Aren’t you a teeny tiny bit self-righteous, censorious, sanctimonious and lacking in any sense of perspective? Maybe get a hobby.

What is Islamophobic? What is racist? Some say a meritocracy is racist, some nutters have even called Mathematics and 'The Countryside' racist.

If the employer reads his posts and deems them OK, he will be fine.

If they think that the contents of his posts are racist and aimed at stirring up racial hatred, they may decide that they don't want a racist working for their company which offers a service to a diverse community.

Brefugee · 20/01/2025 14:37

I have always been of the opinion that you should own your decisions.

So if you are on a far right or antifa march: show your face. Have the courage of your convictions.

If you are reporting someone: put your name to it.

In this case: i wouldn't report to their employer unless they name their employer prominently on their social media. Then i would screenshot and email them, if i were going to report at all. (I probably wouldn't. report to the platform, but not the employer)

Not as despicable as being a racist though.

Indeed. Given that there are All New recent definitions of “racism”, who decides? Certainly shouldn’t be over zealous, politically driven, social media users.

HesDeadBenYouCanStopNow · 20/01/2025 14:42

It would depend on to what degree the entries were racist, e.g, do they indicate that the person couldn't possibly provide an equitable service to someone from the community mentioned. I assume it wasn't an illegal comment or you would have mentioned it

It would also make a difference on whether their page clearly identified who they are employed by.

I had one of these reported to me, but the person didn't identify openly their employer. Our legal team deemed it not requiring disciplinary action. I have the person advice on their security controls and suggestions on considering carefully what they shared and with who. I didn't agree with the post but it didn't stray beyond freedom of speech.

Everanewbie · 20/01/2025 14:46

What would be your objective, OP? To protect people? To take vengeance? To achieve justice? To signal your virtue?

Some people are easily led. Good, otherwise fair people get sucked in by these Britain First type facebook groups. They agree that they want their poppy worn with pride, and that injured veterans should be at the front of the queue so sign up to these facebook groups. Those simplifications of complex issues can be a gateway drug into slightly more questionable statements. The same way in which supporting the Palestinian cause can quickly and unwittingly descend into antisemitism. I don't like it but have some sympathy with those that are manipulated. I don't want their lives destroyed for ill judged facebook likes.

corvidconvo · 20/01/2025 14:46

You should unfriend, block, mute, whatever you need to do on FB to no longer see this person's posts, then get on with your own life.

IkeaMeatballGravy · 20/01/2025 14:48

What is your motivation for reporting them? Is anyone at risk if they stay in thier job or do you just want them to suffer consequences?

I have called people out in person for making anti semitic and racist comments and had heated discussions about it, but to go to thier employer and get them sacked feels dirty to me, especially if they have kids to feed. All you will achieve is add fuel to the right wing fire if someone loses thier job for 'expressing an opinion'.

BallerinaRadio · 20/01/2025 14:51

Wow the amount of people on here jumping to defend the potential racist is quite the eye opener.

People need to realise that actions on social media have real life consequences.
