Someone spreading race hate. Report to employer?

emma91july · 20/01/2025 13:58

Someone I know is spreading race hate (as well as Islamophobia - separate kind of hate, I understand) on social media. I have "reported" some of most recent posts on Facebook (before blocking the person). Facebook agreed that the posts breached their standards and have notified the person. I understand from others that this person continues to post hate-mongering stuff on Facebook.
They work in a very "customer-centric" in the heart of a very diverse community. Would you report this person anonomously to their employer? There is a whiteblowing procedure in place. Their employer is very hot on equality, diversity, respect for all etc.

OP posts:

Not anonymously, no.

Yes, I was absolutely delighted that their employer took ableism seriously enough to dismiss them. Brilliant. Couldn't care less about their potential poverty - perhaps they shouldn't spew hate about us.

As if Facebook cares about ableism 😂

Well you sound pleasant- did you get a thrill out of the power trip of wrecking a family? Would you be smiling if your actions caused one of their family members to have serious mental health issues? Yet somehow you think you’re morally superior! Disgusting

Considering the bloke had, "single" on his profile, I doubt I "wrecked a family". Even if I did, I really could not care less. The one spouting hate speech wrecked their family, not me. I simply pointed it out.

I have serious mental health issues. Five mental illnesses, highly medicated and very ill. Seeing and experiencing ableism exacerbates my illnesses.

Why are you so against the reporting of hate speech? Why should people within a protected characteristic sit back and shut up when experiencing hateful speech? Why should people who choose to make vile, derogatory comments about the most vulnerable people in society, face no comeback, when hate speech is covered by law?

Ahh, you people. It's always, "But what about the poor ableist/racist/homophobe..??" and not about the group of people they're targeting. I wonder why?

Yes, this poster is morally superior, quite frankly. What is actually disgusting is turning a blind eye to hate speech.

I too suffer from mental health issues, this person could have also suffered from something. I don’t really care what people write on their Facebook, thats up to them. I can only control how I react.

I used to work next to a multi story car park. There were several times when people in suits stood on top of it threatening to jump off. I once saw someone do just that who had just lost their job. Sometimes people’s jobs are all they have. I would hate to think I had any part in that, regardless of what they had done..sometimes people don’t always think through the consequences of what they do. They’re so busy thinking “I’m right” that they don’t think about the person on the other side.

Of course it’s not right to spread hate. But I have no idea of any back ground behind something someone posts on the internet. You met hate with hate. Saying you don’t care what happens to someone’s family is hateful in my mind and just as bad as anything he could have said. Maybe think more next time about the consequences of your actions.

Do think it’s morally superior to say you don’t care what happens to someone’s family? Are you going to turn a blind eye to that?

Nah. It's not hateful to report someone who is posting hate about a protected characteristic while displaying the name of their employer on their profile.

Anyone who posts hate online about vulnerable people should be prepared to face consequences. If their job is all they have, why aren't they protecting it? Why is spewing venom more important to them than their job?

Again, no, I really couldn't care less what happens to random people I don't know, due to the actions of someone in their family who is probably just passing on their disgusting thoughts. You're supporting someone who told me that I should be dead, because I'm a burden on society and bring no value to the human race. He said that I should kill myself, my husband and children hated me and couldn't tell me, and putting them through being seen with a wheelchair user was selfish.

You think I should care about someone who literally wished me dead and told me to kill myself? Absolutely not going to happen.

Well, by your own admission, you’ve said you don’t care about what happens to their family, people who haven’t done anything, so I would say the hate was equal on both sides. You say you couldn’t care less what happens to random people you don’t know, which is precisely what he might have thought. Cut from the same cloth.

Of course what they said was deplorable-but I don’t think your actions and the potential outcome were any better. You reacted to a single comment. From someone you had no knowledge of. I think the better response would be to post a comment back report to Facebook then block and move on.

JubileeJuice · 22/01/2025 07:12

Again, no. I don't hate their family, because I don't know them. The only person who would cause issues for their family, is the person who posted the hate speech in the first place.

It wasn't a single comment. My actions of reporting hate speech were better than posting hate speech. I hope that helps you understand.

cmsinvestigation · 22/01/2025 07:56

Depends on exactly what was said.

I’m saying that your actions were hateful and largely based on retribution. You most likely fuelled whatever prejudices he had.

its interesting you don’t care about people because you don’t know them, yet you seem to think this person should care about people he doesn’t know because his words of hate fitted into a neat box.

I think your actions and lack of care about the fall out on innocent parties is outside my morals - but you do you.

JubileeJuice · 22/01/2025 08:45

I'm sorry that you believe that I shouldn't have taken action against someone doing something that was illegal. I'm sorry that you feel a victim of ableist abuse is not as important as someone who was posting hate speech online. Whatever damaged you, I hope that you are able to seek some support, and get help for the issues you have.

Perhaps the racist ought to have given more thought to the consequences of their actions? How do you think POC feel reading this shit day in day out? I wish the consequences of being awful caught up with people more often honestly - don't dish it out if you can't take it.

Oh nothing damaged me. If you considered what that person did was illegal you should have reported them to the police. Why did you think an employer was the best person to speak to about your suspicions about a crime?

Ah so now you are making derogatory remarks and question ing mt mental health. Can I have the name of your employer please so that I can speak to them.

September1013 · 22/01/2025 10:49

Depends what you mean by “spreading race hate”.

Making a controversial post on the Israel-Palestine situation that conflicts with your views?

Sharing a questionable Reform UK post about immigration?

Or outright hatred like “all people from X race are Y/need to Z” kind of thing?

If it is outright hatred and discrimination then I would report to their employer and potentially the police as this behaviour needs to be called out.

I’m not sure why you’ve quoted me, my comments were nothing about race, neither was the post I was commenting on.

You see, this is the problem. People read what they want to see, then go steaming off in anger spreading their own interpretation. Before long, Chinese whispers have got someone sacked.

JubileeJuice · 22/01/2025 10:50

If you've ever tried to report a hate crime to the police, you'd know why. I also think it's important for an employer to know if one of their employees is hateful towards a protected group. Why wouldn't it be?

Where did I say anything derogatory? I do hope you get the support you need. That's a nice thing to say. I also didn't question your mental health... You said yourself that you have mental illness. Hope that clears things up for you!

Oh, and I'm my own boss. You can report me to me, if you like. I'll tell you the same, though.

Its literally the topic of the thread... But whatever
Replace race with the victim of whichever hate speech you fancy. The point is the same. The perp is not the victim.

luckylavender · 22/01/2025 10:52

No, I would not. I wouldn't do anything anonymously. It's despicable.

Because race hate is fine?!

luckylavender · 22/01/2025 10:53

Babadookinthewardrobe · 20/01/2025 14:05

No. It’s none of your business and reporting anonymously is very cowardly. If their colleagues, customers or employees experience any problems they can report it themselves.

Race hatred is everyone's business

You are saying I need help, I find that extremely derogatory and ableist. If you are your own boss can I have the names of your customers please, I feel they have ffs right to know the type of person they’re working with, one who makes derogatory remarks about people’s mental health then tries to gaslight them when it’s pointed out. One who then seems to have an idea they are untouchable because they are their own boss and answerable to no one!

So in summary:

  1. you don’t care about people you don’t know
  2. you think it’s appropriate to comment on social media about people’s mental health and tell them they need help, simply for challenging you
  3. you don’t think you’re accountable to anyone
  4. you don’t think the police are the appropriate people to report a suspicion of a crime to and would rather act as judge and jury yourself

No I’m sorry, I wasn’t commenting on that, I was commenting on a particular point. You made assumptions that were untrue based on your own preconceptions. If someone is suspected of a crime the appropriate people to report that to is the police. It’s a dangerous society where having a different view, even if it’s unpalatable is punished other than through the criminal justice system.

Yes, I can read what you said. Most employers don't tolerate hate speech, it isn't a "punishment" to be fired for it - it is a consequence of violating their code of conduct.
