Someone spreading race hate. Report to employer?

emma91july · 20/01/2025 13:58

Someone I know is spreading race hate (as well as Islamophobia - separate kind of hate, I understand) on social media. I have "reported" some of most recent posts on Facebook (before blocking the person). Facebook agreed that the posts breached their standards and have notified the person. I understand from others that this person continues to post hate-mongering stuff on Facebook.
They work in a very "customer-centric" in the heart of a very diverse community. Would you report this person anonomously to their employer? There is a whiteblowing procedure in place. Their employer is very hot on equality, diversity, respect for all etc.

OP posts:

Wow the amount of people agreeing that someone is a racist without actually knowing what was said….

Agreed

TeabySea · 20/01/2025 15:53

Should add that if this were a supposed friend of mine, I'd most certainly challenge what they were saying. I might even, depending on the content they were posting, contact them off the social media platform and tell them that I cannot agree with their views, and am shocked/disappointed to see this from someone I considered a friend. I'd probably block them too and stop the friendship.

That said, I've an elderly relative who shares content I consider borderline racist, but it's the sort of insidious Britain First garbage. I can't block them for a variety of reasons but I've countered every post they've ever put up, and when they've reviewed my rebuttal, they don't disagree. I suspect in this case, there are some MH issues related to ageing.
If it were someone younger I'd have absolutely no qualms about going in all guns blazing. I hate racists.

Wow the amount of people on here jumping to defend the potential racist is quite the eye opener.

People need to realise that actions on social media have real life consequences.

there are various definitions of "racist" and it is not always clear what posters mean.

it is also not clear if this racism is or can be related to the person's employer (eg they have all their work details on their bio, etc)

Nobody is defending racism. people are defending anonymous snitching that may have serious real world consequences out of all proportion to the crime.

And to do so anonymously? is underhand and cowardly. If i encountered someone on my fb friends list who made a racist comment, i would: challenge them by replying to the comment.
Probably by unfriending, and maybe even blocking them.

I may, if they have all their employers details on their profile, warn them that what they have written is racist and someone else - not me - may alert their employer.

The ball is then in their court.

If it was someone i worked with? I would just go up to them and tell them that they need to be much more careful about posting racist tripe, and unfriend/block.
I would also be checking the company SM policies.

But i absolutely do not believe that anonymous reporting is a good thing in these circumstances.

AlisonDonut · 20/01/2025 16:01

On here a while back it was racist to look at someone and it was also racist to not look at someone.

So I think it is safe to say that until people know what was actually said, maybe reserve judgement before egging the OP on to 'report'.

Greyish2025 · 20/01/2025 16:13

HelenaWaiting · 20/01/2025 14:00

No, I would not. I wouldn't do anything anonymously. It's despicable.

Reporting animosity is despicable in your opinion, why?

PinkFrogss · 20/01/2025 16:15

titchy · 20/01/2025 15:03

If Facebook thinks they're racist enough to remove they must be awful.

I thought the same. I’ve reported some absolutely dreadful posts on Facebook that haven’t been removed.

OP if you want to report them do it, his workplace can decide if it needs to be managed under their social media policy.

JHound · 20/01/2025 16:29

If I thought there was a chance it could impact the service the wider community receives from
this person I would absolutely report them with evidence.

ExtraOnions · 20/01/2025 16:41

I would, and I have. A Met Police Officer posting racist shite.

The only person who ruined his career was him.

Behaviours have consequences

TinklySnail · 20/01/2025 19:55

@emma91july The majority of us will just report truly hateful posts without the need to come on here and ask.
As you’ve not been back I can only assume you’re here to be a goady fucker and don’t actually give 2 fucks about what actually doing anything.

Feelingathomenow · 20/01/2025 20:01

What’s your motive? Why does you think you’re in a position to decide what’s racist?

Link with timestamps please?

scorpiogirly · 20/01/2025 20:27

What did they say that you deemed to be racist and islamaphobic?

Get MNHQ to sort out a half decent search function and maybe you could find it yourself.

Loving people trying to pretend racists aren't actually racist.

As nobody knows what was said, nobody can tell. You get that right?

OP already knows and has informed you that the posts spread race hate. That's not what they asked.

All these posters being deliberately obtuse and goady. No wonder they haven't returned.

TheKeatingFive · 20/01/2025 20:55

Okay OP, time to cut to the chase. What did the post actually say?

Brefugee · 20/01/2025 21:10

All these posters being deliberately obtuse and goady. No wonder they haven't returned.

We already know that what one person calls race hate can be totally not race hate. So unless we know what was said, we can't judge.

What we CAN judge is what OP wants to do. And several of us have said: if you report, have the courage of your convictions and put your name to it. Nobody is excusing racism. Racism should be called out, it is what i do if one of my fb contacts posts something racist. Depending on their reaction, i will unfriend and block. If i work with them, or if they are a member of the police - and that is clear on their account - i will tell them that i am going to report them to their employer and the employer can take the next steps.

I don't hide behind a mask of anonymity. And nor should OP.

Don't see why. I'm sure the employer will look at the evidence before deciding what action to take, it's not necessary for us to judge.

TinDogTavern · 20/01/2025 21:14

As someone who has been reported, repeatedly, to my employer, invariably anonymously, for "transphobic" social media comments such as 'only women get pregnant', by people I'm sure just as certain as you that they were right and virtuous, I'm going to go with NO.

iamawarriorwhojustcrieseasily · 20/01/2025 21:24

If it isn't an uneducated attempt to be " Political" then report away. We do not have to live around racial hatred or hostility anymore, and those that spread it need holding accountable. If that results in disciplinary action - then that's on them.

If we have women being marched to HR for being upset they have to share their spaces with biological males, then racists shouldn't be allowed to be racists Grin

But these aren’t actions are they? It’s just saying stuff. OP, my approach to this is to challenge it directly when I see it. I have had people back down and delete things when I’ve pointed out that it’s racist.

Quite. Strongly suspect that a lot of the "but what even IS 'racist' these days?" crowd on this thread hold some pretty unsavoury views themselves...
