Someone spreading race hate. Report to employer?

emma91july · 20/01/2025 13:58

Someone I know is spreading race hate (as well as Islamophobia - separate kind of hate, I understand) on social media. I have "reported" some of most recent posts on Facebook (before blocking the person). Facebook agreed that the posts breached their standards and have notified the person. I understand from others that this person continues to post hate-mongering stuff on Facebook.
They work in a very "customer-centric" in the heart of a very diverse community. Would you report this person anonomously to their employer? There is a whiteblowing procedure in place. Their employer is very hot on equality, diversity, respect for all etc.

Can we report you to your employer for going out of your way to cause trouble/job loss to ppl who don’t share your views and doing it anonymously because you don’t even own your behaviour?

if the person is saying illegal stuff, report to authority via the proper legal channels (but I d bet it’s not illegal, you just don’t like to hear it)

But trying to involve their workplace to get them fired is a very nasty, cancel culture move

Apollo365 · 20/01/2025 14:53

Report.

Cherry8809 · 20/01/2025 14:54

While racism is pretty gross, I think it’s pretty cunty to report them to their employer for something that they posted on their own social media.

Given that you have them on Facebook, you could assume they are a friend of yours - why would you want to go out of your way to get them in trouble and potentially lose their job? Would you sleep better at night?

If you do choose to report them, own it. Provide your name and details, so your “friend” can know how you truly feel about them.

Tittat50 · 20/01/2025 14:54

Ones definition of racism and Islamaphobia is not the same as another's. We are seeing this on here and out in the public sphere now.

I appreciate it isn't appropriate to specify exact details here.

If the posts are racist I wonder how someone thinks they can publicly do that without repercussions with friends, employment and more.

I can see someone saying ' white lives matter ' just doesn't understand the reason why people pushed for a black lives matter campaign. I can see alot of people here are just misinformed, very unaware of the inequality still for certain groups in say America at the hands of the Police. I would not go straight to 'racist' without further probing.

I personally would keep out of it. It does kind of depend upon the specifics though as some comments are going to be more scary and threatening than others.

Wow the amount of people on here jumping to defend the potential racist is quite the eye opener.

People need to realise that actions on social media have real life consequences.

I think the counter-argument to your point is contained in the post itself. "Potential racist". We don't know if the person is. i.e We don't know whether we're talking Mississippi burning, or questioning BLM's financial accounts. And furthermore, we question the OP's assumed position as arbiter over what is considered racist.

Winterskyfall · 20/01/2025 15:00

Wow, freedom of speech is well and truly dead. What someone posts on FB has absolutely nothing to do with their job. If they are behaving badly at work and in a racist manner report them if not stop acting like the gestapo.

titchy · 20/01/2025 15:03

If Facebook thinks they're racist enough to remove they must be awful.

What bollocks. Until 20 seconds ago you weren't allowed to say a man was not a woman on facebook, and although there is a supposedly a new policy allowing freedom of speech on FB people are still getting temporary bans for speaking biological fact.

You might have a point. Some of the comments sections are pretty grim.

2bubsandme · 20/01/2025 15:10

Facebook didn’t remove a comment saying ‘kll them all, they are all trrorists’ regarding a video of a child blown to pieces in Palestine. So… I’d say op must have reported something pretty horrific..

MrsTerryPratchett · 20/01/2025 15:12

Starbucks or the NHS? Because my level of busybodying would differ. Unemployed racists aren't safer in any way. But if their job has an element of professional standards, that's more important.

Fuck, that's terrifying.

A daily occurrence tbh sadly

I agree with your observation. The number of openly racist comments ( and I mean blatant racism) is quite something. I came to the conclusion FB doesn't want to ' police' it. Too much resource.

Everanewbie · 20/01/2025 15:14

titchy · 20/01/2025 15:03

If Facebook thinks they're racist enough to remove they must be awful.

Facebook removed posts referencing Jay Bhattacharya and Sunetra Gupta that questioned lockdowns. I wouldn't conclude anything from what Facebook remove or ignore.

hydriotaphia · 20/01/2025 15:14

I would tbh. I wouldn't feel bad about being anonymous either.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 20/01/2025 15:16

Yes and I absolutely wouldn’t give a shit about doing so. If they lose their job, that’s on them and their employer, not you . I wouldn’t be anon though

Tittat50 · 20/01/2025 15:18

hydriotaphia · 20/01/2025 15:14

It all rests entirely upon what they are saying / posting.

I'm quite sure I am part of the ' racist' and 'Islamaphobic' accused on another thread I'm part of. I certainly would not deserve to be ' cancelled ' based on one's definition of these terms.

rumblegrumble · 20/01/2025 15:20

Presumably if they're bad enough that the culprit should lose his job, the police will be involved, so I'm not sure why you feel the need to insert yourself into the situation? Presumably if the police need your help with the investigation they'll call you.

Hate speech is actually a crime and rightfully so.

TinklySnail · 20/01/2025 15:28

If it disturbs you then report it. It’s up to the employer to decide if lines have been crossed.
Just be certain that it actually is hate and not just an unpopular opinion.
IF it’s more a case of you don’t like her opinions then you’d be better off blocking.
IF it’s true racism don’t be afraid to call it out. That includes reporting to the police because that should be your first port of call before the employer.

Boomer55 · 20/01/2025 15:28

You’ve blocked him. Leave it be now - not your issue. 🤷‍♀️

Dotto · 20/01/2025 15:32

We have a civic duty to report crime and call things out that are unacceptable. If the employer is asking for whistle blowing reports then use it.

FanFckingTastic · 20/01/2025 15:44

Presumably you were 'friends' with this person on Facebook to be able to see their posts. If this is the case why would you not call them out?

I agree with challenging racism. I'm not sure I agree with doing it anonymously. Why would you report to their employer unless the employer is linked to the social media, or they are a spokesperson? If you disagree with what they have written or their opinions then you can either block and ignore or call it out directly like an adult?
