Daughter changing her eye colour?

begoodorbegone · 20/01/2025 13:18

I’ve found out my daughter is going to New York to have her eye colour surgically changed. I’m horrified.

I just can’t support this. Aibu? It’s caused a horrific argument and we’re not speaking.

is she 12, 22 or 42? Makes a difference.

BillStickersWillBeProsocuted · 20/01/2025 13:20

I didn't realise this was even a thing!

If she's an adult I'm there's not much you can do other than make sure she is aware of any risks

WongKarWhy · 20/01/2025 13:22

Oh dear. It's seriously risky and can cause blindness!

I suppose if she's aware of the risk and still determined, there's very little you can do though.

randomchap · 20/01/2025 13:23

Is it worth damaging your relationship with your daughter over?

Presumably she's an adult and is paying for this herself. Is the treatment safe? What is your objection based on? Risk, cost, cosmetic reasons?

Why does she want it doing?

CharlotteStreetW1 · 20/01/2025 13:26

I assumed this was a wind up until I googled...

LadyKenya · 20/01/2025 13:27

I would be extremely concerned, but if she is of an age where she is not dependent on you, then there is not a lot you can do OP. This procedure is still so new, and risky.

HolidayBrochure · 20/01/2025 13:28

Omg, I didn't realise this existed. It sounds frightening and massively risky.

She said there’s been no reported case of blindness. But still 🙈

The sad thing is the result looks scary and nothing like natural eyes and i say this as a woman who used to like wearing coloured contacts. She would be better off finding a good brand of eye contacts. All you can do is support her and warn her off the dangers. Would she listen from someone else that might persuade her?

A woman in Brazil lost an eye after this was attempted and went horrifically wrong. There have been multiple reports of blindness. You must be worried sick. What a ridiculously trivial thing for her to worry about, I mean you can get coloured lenses for buttons so this is insane.

Personally, I don't think it's worth even the risk of blindness or vision loss, and all experts agree it is a risk! I didn't know there had been no reported cases though, so I can see how some less cautious people might take that as a green light.

Hopefully, it will be fine for her if she goes ahead.

Ohpooh · 20/01/2025 13:34

Does she have a mental illness like bipolar that makes her take risks like this? Maybe notify her surgeon?

Getitwright · 20/01/2025 13:35

She is taking a huge risk. I would ask her to take out insurance, and make it plain to her that if she does end up with issues, she is risking the rest of her life, not to mention the lives of any loved ones/dependents she might have. It’s vanity going to extremes. What does she hope to achieve from the change anyway?

I think that’s a different surgery

I'd never heard of this, so I googled. This was the top link in the search engine.

American Academy of Ophthalmology Issues Warning on the Dangers of Eye Color-Changing Procedures

BobbyBiscuits · 20/01/2025 13:38

It sounds bizarre. And I have heard this type of surgery is extremely risky. And expensive.

Surely wearing different colour contacts is easier and more fun as you could change it up all the time?

I guess if her mind's made up and she's paying for it herself you just have to hope it works out well. But by all means tell her you think it's totally unnecessary.

Has she had lots of other cosmetic surgeries? It seems like the sort of thing only someone who was quite extreme in their body modification would want to do.

Stressedoutmum6274 · 20/01/2025 13:41

Iv seen this. I dont think the eye colour post surgery looks very real,
It also looks slightly "demonic" to me.

Doctors in Uk will not do this surgery for a reason and no offence OP your daughter is risking her eyesight for vanity.

netflixfan · 20/01/2025 13:44

How old is she?

Hadalifeonce · 20/01/2025 13:46

I assume you have suggested coloured lenses? Much less dangerous.

Concretejungle1 · 20/01/2025 13:51

There are high risks of blindness/damage with this. She needs to do her research.

Iwishiwasapolarbear · 20/01/2025 13:51

What colour is she changing them from and to? And why? I would be horrified too, such a risky procedure

Pushmepullu · 20/01/2025 13:52

I’m being really thick, why would you want to change the colour of your eyes, especially if it’s a surgical procedure?

Maverick66 · 20/01/2025 13:55

Can she not use coloured contact lenses?

Curtainqueen · 20/01/2025 13:56

I suppose the real question is why? Why does she want to change her eye colour?

Mabelmable · 20/01/2025 13:58

It sounds a very risky procedure, will it be carried out in New York or subcontracted elsewhere.
