Is it really that wrong to want for your country what Trump stands for?

I know that there are plenty of threads on Trump at the moment, but most of them are designed to rubbish the guy. That’s been done to death in the last 10 years.

He has still won two presidential elections so perhaps it’s time to move the discussion on a bit.Let’s put aside Trump’s personality, bluster, and whether he will deliver or not, for a second.

Is it really so wrong and bad to want to go for what his core message is? Why is the far right label used so liberally and will we ever see a government in this country which can tackle this madness -

A stop to or huge reduction in illegal immigration

Putting your own country first ahead of internationalism. It’s not a novel idea and certainly not a byword for automatically wanting war. In fact Trump’s argument is that war is bad

Saying no the climate hysteria. Climate change is real but climate emergency seems to be a made up concept to simply tax people to death to re distribute taxes to government lobbyists. Why should people accept being poorer in the name of this dangerous ideology

Putting a stop to woke madness. When did it become ok for state sponsored mutilation of children? Men pretending to be women in prison and hospitals getting access to women’s spaces. People being sanctioned do not using the correct pronouns

Driving the economy forward and putting a stop to endless freebies for those who have no intention of contributing to the system and refuse to work because they are sad.

The fact that someone as eccentric as Trump has to fly the flag for common sense ideas shows you just how batshit the political discourse has become.

We do have our own version of Trump. Nigel Farage. And I hope to god no one is stupid enough to fall for his 'man of the people' populist rubbish and vote him in.

Agree but unfortunately Labour are doing their best to ensure reform's vote share rises.

The stagnation started before Brexit. Arguably Brexit was a reaction to the pre-existing stagnation.

I was just about to type the same thing. Brexit was a reaction to economic decline.

He’s a very patriotic narcissist. You can’t deny that he loves America and wants it to “win.” Of course his idea of winning may be different than yours and mine.

From an American perspective, I think it’s a case of: He may be a son of a b1tch, but he is our son of b1tch!

Who wouldn’t want someone to fight doggedly and shamelessly for one’s interests? It’s radically different from the UK where voters often feel their interests come after global virtue signalling on net zero, imperialism reparations, etc. The UK has been stagnating since the global crash. Better someone like Trump than someone like Milei…let’s not get as bad as Argentina- the medicine is much worse.

There was a really interesting article in the FT the other day about U.K. growth and how the current government will never achieve it because they don’t want it enough. America prioritises growth above all else and the U.K. tries to keep everyone happy and caters to every special interest group and therefore achieves nothing. An interesting point I thought.

No-one is in a position to be isolationist and protectionist as we live on a planet with billions of other humans. Not China, not Russia and not the US.

Of course the plutocrats like Musk who are the real puppetmasters and have more money, power and influence than many countries are happy to have idiots like Trump doing their work for them, and they fear the power of countries working together in bodies like the EU to make sure they pay their taxes and that there is nowhere to hide their wealth. Their business is turning people against one another so we look away from the real enemies of the people - those with vast wealth and influence who like to hoover up more of our money while people fight for the scraps.

I agree - but my point is that Trump is NOT isolationist, he is aggressive and wants to go after resources that the US needs regardless of whether it belongs to them or not...

I just hope he manages to roll back the madness of transgender ideology which has caused so much harm. If he can get violent men out of women's prisons, half puberty blockers and ' gender affirming surgery ' on young people, and stop men competing in women's sports then he will have done something really useful, which actually benefits women worldwide.

Agree. It's so annoying that the left have failed so badly on this issue that they practically handed Trump the presidency.

Ghosttofu99 · 20/01/2025 10:05

Do women on Mumsnet think the agenda of an alleged rapist, who wants to prevent women from accessing healthcare including safe abortions, and who blows smoke up the bums of white supremacists should be emulated in our own country?

They may well support this mean spirited nonsense but it is incredibly poor short term thinking if they do.

The Conservatives and Farage have been trying to jump on this bandwagon for a long time now but, as narrow minded policies generally result in poverty and decline for ordinary working people like we have seen over the past ten years of coalition and Tory government, people eventually grow tired of meaningless populism and vote in the other side!

14 years of Tories who are just out for themselves will do that to a country.

It’s really picked up under Labour hasn’t it? Nothing but sunny days ahead!

Quite. Hitler improved the German economy.

Until his narcissism and megalomania caused Germany to be destroyed by bombs because he wanted to control the world resources. He was such a coward than, instead of facing what he did to his country, committed suicide, leaving his people to face the consequences.

Datgal · 20/01/2025 10:08

He is absolutely fucking bonkers and worse, very dangerous. You really don't have to dig that deep to find insane things he's said or done.

Agree, the “liberal gullibles” have wrecked Britain. Any opposition or even questioning has been silenced by the blob, and more recently the Courts.

All we can do is hope for some kind of renewal with emerging political leaders.

Yet we haven't had a liberal government for many years... so how do you feel the liberals have ruined the country?

SharpOpalNewt · 20/01/2025 10:09

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 20/01/2025 10:03

Agree but unfortunately Labour are doing their best to ensure reform's vote share rises.

And the Tories aren't?

They shut the door by leaving the EU for about 200,000 people a year from Europe coming and going and opened the door to legal net migration of 800,000 mostly from Asia who stay and then bring their families, in 2021. And you blame the party who has been in power barely six months?

I was never bothered about immigration or what colour people are or where they come from but the population increasing by more than 1% a year and from countries which have a vastly different culture to ours, not similar to us like other Europeans, must surely have an effect.

Trixiefirecracker · 20/01/2025 10:09

Am I wrong in believing that people in government/governing should have a good moral compass? This seems to be the last thing on Trumps list. Anyone that can say this, in all honesty, shouldn’t be allowed to run anything. Let alone a country

You could also argue that not catering to the individual interests/needs of rust belt communities in the US is what created the vacuum for Trump in the first place though.

The Tories weren't in power during the financial crash. Labour lost the next GE because of the state of the economy and Iraq.

LastTrainsEast · 20/01/2025 09:39

Contrary to popular opinion climate change doesn't suddenly make things burst into flames and wildfires have existed for as long as humans have.

What it can do is affect rainfall and therefore make things dryer in summer so a fire started by accident (or as in Greece and the US started by devout climate crisis believers) can be more of a problem.

We have always dealt with them before by having firebreaks and in the worst case emergency services trained to deal with it.

Firebreaks seem too trivial to bother with and maintaining them costs money so they get neglected until houses burn down.

So how wide should these "Fire breaks" be? the fires in California were fanned by 80mph winds, carry embers 100s if not 1000s of meters.

An impossible situation for fire fighters regardless of training.

Trump simplicity

Yeah... Where was Kenneth Starr when we needed him eh? Like a dog with a bone when it was a Dem who was the sleaze bag on duty...

How? They've extradited more illegal immigrants in the last 6months than the last government did in years, are trying to re-invest in public services, and are also softening the trade deals with EU so we can actually make money with our closest trading partners again...

Reform would = UK being a sad little poor island with no investment or growth.

Reform would sell us off to the US, Emirates and whoever else would have the last bits of wealth to pick off our bones... Great 'sovereignty' innit?

A convicted felon should have no place in the White House. If he is the best that the republicans can put forward, then the USA is in deep trouble.

The Tories weren't in power during the financial crash. Labour lost the next GE because of the state of the economy and Iraq.

I would agree with that - but the state of the economy was largely due to bankers and the financial crash. The Tories voted against any increase in bank regulation while they were in opposition - had they been in office we may have gone into a deep depression and financial meltdown like Argentina as the banks would have been even less regulated.

Then when they got into power they fucked us over with austerity and Brexit, then later corruption and total incompetence.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 20/01/2025 09:32

Trumps re-election has emboldened the religious far right and misogynistic idiots to bring in the chant of "your body, my choice" in relation to women's reproductive rights. That tells you everything you need to know.

But he himself has said he is leaving this up to the individual states. There will always be nutters going around chanting things - doesn't mean anything really. On the other side you get the deranged TRAs chanting their slogans demanding that children be allowed to mutilate their bodies; and overtly sexual content should be used to indoctrinate the kids into queer theory in schools. There are idiots on both sides, but no need to spread disinformation about women's rights being taken away with no evidence.

Christmasandallthetrimmings · 20/01/2025 10:17

I dunno, I lived in The USA during the first Trump presidency and all of those things were still rife. İn fact, it's where I was suddenly aware of the transgender stuff, as it hasn't really been a thing beforehand. I had my first experience of being harassed by a transgender man presenting as a woman in a women only space, and nothing was done about it, due to not wanting to cause him offense.
I also was an illegal immigrant for a while, due to an abusive relationship out there, and not being able to leave when my visa ran out. People were going nuts over all the things Trump would do to get the illegal immigrants out and literally nothing happened. I got free healthcare, benefits and a place to live and eat for free. İt was an area rife with illegal immigrants and nothing really happened. Police would know you were illegal, due to one thing or another, and didn't care.

I think it's all talk, to get a certain type of voter to vote for him. Just like all politics here really.
