I believe we've seen the last free and fair, properly democratic America presidential election for a long, long time. American exceptionalism will not protect it - or the constitution - from Trump.

No guard rails. Immunity from prosecution. ONLY enablers in positions of power. Control of both houses. No morals whatsoever. Doesn't give a shit about America or American people.

I'm avoiding the news cycle at the moment.

Joe Rogan said Elon Musk ‘predicted’ the election results four hours before they were officially declared. Makes you wonder if it was a free and fair democratic election.

millymollymoomoo · 20/01/2025 07:11

So pleased he won. Time for sanity again instead of ludicrous left destroying everything

What have they 'destroyed'?

What's your metric?

Unemployment is at a historical low.

Stock market has been booming.

Wages up.

Yes housing & healthcare is a shit show but Trump has no plan for that.

Violent crime has been falling for years under Biden.

Border crossings were significantly lower at the end of 2024 than they were under Trump in 2019.

Inflation is low.

Prices are still high, like they are everywhere else, but again, Trump has no plan for that.

So what are you referring to?

so cringe!!

I reckon Musk, Farage, Trump, Truss and a lettuce should form the next village people!! Would be better than keeping them in their day jobs! 😉

I feel a meme coming on 🤣

No it doesn’t.
And wages would go up for those remaining if undocumented migrants are deported. Not that this will happen, given the sheer size of the task.
........
If the undocumented migrants were deported, do you really think many American people would want to do the jobs they do? They are just so useful and hard working. Not everyone is prepared to do cleaning, housekeeping, cooking, child minding, gardening, driving, even for more pay. It's the same here in the UK, Boris had to import foreign labour during lockdown to help farmers with the harvest; it cost a lot, they were housed in newly erected prefabricated buiidings for however long it took, then sent home, but someone had to pick the fruit and vegetables and the British didn't want to. The 'foreign' workers were extremely industrious. Our best gardeners, cleaners and plumbers are from overseas, never mind delivery drivers and restaurant staff.

Get real.

Fruit picking etc isn't really a case of the locals don't want to. More that it's very seasonal work in rural areas where the cost of living/wages are both lower than the rest of the country. It makes no sense to leave your home in London to work picking strawberries for 3 months in the countryside. The wages won't pay your mortgage/rent. And you can't relocate for a job that lasts 3 months. It does make sense to come work for 3months if the wages are higher than you could get in your home country. Hence seasonal rural work almost always involves labour either from abroad or from poorer areas of a country. It doesn't have to be exploitative (though often is). It doesn't mean locals are lazy.

The mumsnet frenzy will continue to rise all day and peak this evening.
I can’t imagine how it will be when Reform win the next election here.

I really hope people would react to the election of a fascist government here in the same way as all decent people in the US are reacting to having a fascist demagogue in the Whitehouse.

Disgust and despair.

Do you spend a lot of time crudely abusing transwomen online?

Have you ever met a transgender woman and looked at her arse?

I know several women with hairy arses - it's common in women with PCOS.

I know cis-gender men who wax their arses - it's common in the gay community.

Are you a pimply arsed angry feminist who just hates men? How does it feel to be crudely stereotyped and abused in that way? Or maybe it's only transgender people who you think deserve mockery and abuse?

AllEndeavour · 20/01/2025 07:40

He is proof that if you scare people enough, they'll happily vote for anything .

How his voters don't realise they have more in common with the immigrants than they do him and his millionaire/biillonaire supporters I don't know.

What a very strange choice of entertainment! An iconic gay song.

timetodecide2345 · 20/01/2025 07:47

@Joystir59 that's because no other entertainer would want to be seen dead playing at his inauguration!

izimbra · 20/01/2025 07:49

Carl Sagan called it it in 1995

"I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time -- when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness...

The dumbing down of American is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30 second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance"

Letlooseonthedanse · 20/01/2025 07:51

Men who participate in women’s sport deserve derision

I genuinely think he’s been reading Hitler’s playbook:- find scapegoats, say stupid shit, talk of expanding the Vaterland. He’s utterly mad, and so are his people.

In that Godwin himself said comparisions to the MAGA movement may well be appropriate?

Receipts...

In 2023, Godwin published an opinion on The Washington Post stating "Yes, it's okay to compare Trump to Hitler. Don't let me stop you." In the article, Godwin says "But when people draw parallels between Donald Trump’s 2024 candidacy and Hitler’s progression from fringe figure to Great Dictator, we aren’t joking. Those of us who hope to preserve our democratic institutions need to underscore the resemblance before we enter the twilight of American democracy."

shayri · 20/01/2025 08:10

it's absolutely ridiculous that people will compare a man who murdered over 6 million Jews and other minorities/nationalities with Trump. Whilst Trump is undoubtedly an idiot, he's there because the Democrats weren't able to put forward a credible threat.

Jc2001 · 20/01/2025 08:11

BettyBardMacDonald · 20/01/2025 00:28

Exactly. I can't wait to see that.

How many young entitled Americans are going to work in slaughterhouses or agricultural fields or cleaning hotel rooms?

Sitting here with popcorn waiting for the trump voting fools to receive what's coming for them.

There is something that is very broken with any economy that relies on an illegal, underpaid workforce to keep the wheels grinding.

Guinessandafire · 20/01/2025 08:12

I've clicked 'YABU' because you shouldn't be shocked or surprised.

He's a mentally impaired, white supremacist nasty piece of work.

He's also the democratically elected President, due to the huge number of stupid racists that live in that country.

izimbra · 20/01/2025 08:14

@shayri

If you want to have a more sophisticated understanding of what fascism can look like - because you obviously seem to think that it's only fascism if it's similar to Germany under Hitler - this is a good read:
