Just been sitting open-mouthed at his speach. Now it’s the Village People. Am

If you want to have a more sophisticated understanding of what fascism can look like - because you obviously seem to think that it's only fascism if it's similar to Germany under Hitler - this is a good read:

This is also good, and puts Trump in context
Strongmen: How They Rise, Why They Succeed, How They Fall https://amzn.eu/d/6xDJgiW

I've yet to read a book of this genre which isn't heavily influenced by objectivity. Whether it's written by Bernie Sanders or Jordan Peterson. They all have an agenda. Their own.

"it's absolutely ridiculous that people will compare a man who murdered over 6 million Jews and other minorities/nationalities with Trump. Whilst Trump is undoubtedly an idiot, he's there because the Democrats weren't able to put forward a credible threat."

Nobody's comparing his actions to those of Hitler and claiming parity.

He won the election for two reasons. One is inflation - all incumbent governments across the developed world have been severely battered or removed in recent elections because of falls in people's standard of living caused by post pandemic price rises.

Trump also won because vast numbers of Americans live in a disinformation universe.

keep repeating that. It's the reason Vance will win in four years time...

Araminta1003 · 20/01/2025 08:22

Trump has put a man in charge of cost cutting who is the richest man in the world. So the absurdly rich man is going to cut costs for the very poorest?

Isn’t it absurd that the man who has far far far too much is taking the little the poorest have away from them?

"I've yet to read a book of this genre which isn't heavily influenced by objectivity. Whether it's written by Bernie Sanders or Jordan Peterson. They all have an agenda. Their own"

Name one text you've read specifically about fascism that explores the genesis and history of fascism as an ideology and as a political system. Just one. That you've actually read.

Neither Bernie Sanders or Jordan Peterson are historians or respected academics. Peterson is a populist crank and a grifter. Sanders is a politician. Of course they have an agenda.

  1. Did you mean to use the word 'objectivity'? You'd hope academic writing would be objective surely.
shayri · 20/01/2025 08:26

yes, objectivity. They're objective because they have their own agenda, obviously.

I know nothing about politics, but his rhetoric was shocking. Those videos about illegal immigrants, the ludicrous claims he made… I’m in disbelief that this is happening.

Me too - but I am even more angry that the democrats paved the way for his return by their fuckwittery and mismanagement. That expression ‘we get the democracy we deserve’ has never been more apt that in 2025 (and not just applicable to the US - it’s relevant in Canada, Uk, France etc). I’d blame social media but that’s too simple. The information to take informed positions is out there if people bothered to look beyond the headlines. It’s about us as a global community.

"keep repeating that. It's the reason Vance will win in four years time..."

I'll keep repeating it because it's true.

And rampant disinformation may well be the reason why Vance may win an election in 4 years time. (But I suspect that's not what you meant).

That’s not what objective means

shayri · 20/01/2025 08:28

all writers and political
pundits have an agenda. So they claim
to write in an objective way, not bringing feelings or opinions into it, but they always always do. They can't help it. It's called
being human.

Hazeby · 20/01/2025 08:29

On the convicted criminal point, there’s actually nothing in the UK to stop a convicted criminal standing for election either. I suppose the difference is that no one would vote for you here.

So far, anyway.

It's not the first time he's been president. Most of us were in disbelief last time. Have you forgotten already?

'Objectivity' means 'freedom from bias'.

You mean “subjective”

shayri · 20/01/2025 08:31

Democrats need to do less of what you're all doing here, ie. slagging off Trump.
What they need to do is to say how exactly they'll improve things. Then extricate themselves thoroughly from the lunatic cult of identify politics, which has alienated the majority of the population.

You’re confusing the meaning of being objective with having an objective.
It’s an easy mistake

shayri · 20/01/2025 08:35

to clear up the deliberately,
conveniently confused amongst us, read this:

and quote:

"that objectivity is a concept without foundation in reality. We are all subjective, and shouldn’t be afraid to admit it. Fairness in reporting should be the aim"

I agree.

It's like any minute the universe is going to punch us on the shoulder and say,

"Nah! Only joking!"

Toseland · 20/01/2025 08:38

I'm pleased Trump is now President. He will sign an executive order today which means women's rights will be restored and the live medical experiment on children ends.

Alondra · 20/01/2025 08:38

Anniedash · 20/01/2025 00:15

No it doesn’t.

And wages would go up for those remaining if undocumented migrants are deported. Not that this will happen, given the sheer size of the task.

The underground black market economy in the US was estimated at 3 trillion dollars in 2009 (can't find better stats because it's no longer tracked). Good luck deporting all the illegals sustaining the US economy.

Considering the US debt ($36 trillion), a stagnated economy in a divided country without the social fabric to held it together, let's see if what Trump says translates into effective action. 🙄

I believe we've seen the last free and fair, properly democratic America presidential election for a long, long time. American exceptionalism will not protect it - or the constitution - from Trump.

No guard rails. Immunity from prosecution. ONLY enablers in positions of power. Control of both houses. No morals whatsoever. Doesn't give a shit about America or American people.

I'm avoiding the news cycle at the moment.

I think he will change the law so that he never has to leave the White House again and who will stop him when he has the law makers in his pocket?
I genuinely fear civil war in America when he does this. He is completely amoral with nobody to stop him targeting any dissenters and imprisoning them. Once you control the law you can do as you want.
Then there are his violent supporters who will be happy to kill anyone Trump bad mouths on social media.
I foresee an underground resistance movement similar to occupied France in WW2.
I feel so sorry for Americans who didn’t vote for this sociopath.

The ignorance of your posts is staggering.

Trump has slagged off Democrats relentlessly.

He's called them 'lunatics' and 'demonic'. He's said they're traitors who are destroying the US from within.

He's said they're traitors should be locked up.

He's ridiculed Biden. Repeatedly said that Biden has 'ruined' and 'destroyed' America and made it a laughing stock around the world,

90% of Trump's speeches on the stump were him name calling and ridiculing his opponents. He called Harris 'lazy' and 'mentally defective'.

So apparently relentless criticism of political opponents is ok and a vote winner when Trump does it, but is a vote loser when the Democrats do it?

Also it would help if you had actually paid any attention at all to information about policies proposed by the Democrats. All that stuff clearly passed you by.
