Step son used my bath towel

Want to gauge if IABU here.

My and my husband's towels are in the bathroom. Teenage SS keeps his in his room. We each have a hand towel and a bath towel. They all get changed every 3-4 days. When it came to changing them, I realised SS didn't have his towels in his room. He said he'd put them to be laundered a few days before. When I asked him which towels he'd been using in the meantime (he'd showered at least twice during this period), initially he claimed none, then admitted he'd used mine.

I blew a fuse. Couldn't believe he thought this was acceptable. Husband has laughed it off and is accusing me of being dramatic/blowing things out of proportion.

AIBU?

You're being ridiculous,

username299 · 19/01/2025 01:33

I wouldn't be particularly happy about it but blowing a fuse seems a tad dramatic. I'd tell him to use his dad's if it happens again.

SummerFeverVenice · 19/01/2025 01:34

Are you seriously saying you only have 1 towel per person? Please go buy some spare towels so your family can get a fresh one when they need to.

Whydoeseveryonewanttoargue · 19/01/2025 01:35

OMG - immediately call social services, MI5, the prime minister and head of police.

This takes the cake for the most ridiculous non issue I have ever heard.

You blew a fuse over this? God help anyone around you when something actually worth getting upset over happens.

Your husband is right. You are massively overreacting. It’s a towel!

Of course not. We had numerous. 2 clean ones each at a time, that get laundered every 3 to 4 days. But numerous sets to change each time another set is laundered!

I wouldn’t flip my lid over it but I never share towels. I had salmonella years ago and was told not to share towels whilst I recovered, it put me off sharing for life! Plenty of people have infectious diseases and don’t know - I don’t want to catch them.

He's a typical teenager with little concern about personal hygiene. And we shared a bath towel (bath! Not just a hand towel) for 3 days!

I don’t think your DSS would have caught any germs or disease from you - you did shower before using the towels, didn’t you ?

Sarkycat2 · 19/01/2025 01:39

How old is SS? If it was me I’d be really annoyed but then end up seeing the funny side in time. Yes it’s disgusting but unlikely to cause you any harm.
a lot of young people just dont seem to think about their actions and consequences so he probably just used the first towel he could get to. Don’t take it personally as his dad probably wouldn’t have minded as much or in the same way had it been his towel due to it being his DS.

Its ok, you can’t get pregnant from sharing a towel. That’s just a myth.

Guest100 · 19/01/2025 01:41

My daughter uses my towel as hers lives on her bedroom floor. Just keep your towel in your room. Just remember he has probably used your towel many times as he forgot to take his to the bathroom.

Ok, well I would tell him to get a fresh towel instead of using someone else’s towel. I don’t see the point in getting angry though. Consider not keeping bath towels in the bathroom to remove temptation.

TMess · 19/01/2025 01:42

You blew a fuse?! Do you generally have anger issues? I’m quite precious about things like that because I’m easily grossed out (ie can’t use my own toilet after we’ve had guests until I’ve bleached it) but I couldn’t get too bothered about this beyond a “please try not to use mine again”.

BabyCatMama · 19/01/2025 01:44

Ew that's disgusting, I would get angry too. Not just that he used it but that he didn't tell you and you were using it for days sharing it with him !

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/01/2025 01:45

Why did he use yours, not his dad's? That's weird. I could use my dad's towel (related same-sex, would die for me) or my stepmum's (unrelated opposite sex, wouldn't).

It's an odd choice. I would use my mum's towel in an emergency but not my stepdad's. Yuck.

He needs to keep his towels in the bathroom like you both do. (So you can check he's actually using them.)

Otherwise keep your own towels in the bedroom.

That just sounds creepy. Step parent doing a towel check? Eeeew

Choresstress60 · 19/01/2025 01:50

Change your towel arrangements so there is no confusion!!

I am sure he has the ick too!!

She should be able to easily see they are being used from how they have been rehung/folded if she's the one who puts out the towels.

wandawaves · 19/01/2025 01:56

Is he rubbing your towel all over his filthy self before he showers?

Does he have an infectious skin disease?

What exactly are you freaking out about?

SapphireSeptember · 19/01/2025 01:59

Nah, I wouldn't like that.

MajorCarolDanvers · 19/01/2025 02:01
