How much do you really drink?

It’s an interesting topic, and I think lots of people wonder how their drinking compares to others. For us, my husband tends to have a beer or two most evenings, maybe a couple more on weekends if we’re relaxing or watching something together. I rarely drink during the week but will usually have 2-3 glasses of wine spread over Friday and Saturday evenings.

If we’re out with friends or at a party (which is rare now we’re parents), we can definitely drink more, maybe a bottle of wine each or cocktails, depending on the occasion. But that only happens if we’ve got a babysitter and plenty of time to recover the next day!

I’m genuinely curious to hear about others drinking habits and whether this is typical or not. No judgement at all—just keen to know! For context we have one child and are late 30s.

Teetotal here too. Have been for years, mum of 4, early 40's, raised them single handedly so would never risk drinking just incase.

Wheelbarrowracer · 18/01/2025 18:07

I can fairly easily put a bottle of prosecco away at home, over the course of an evening (8-1ish at the weekend) then get up and go for a long run the morning day after. But then, prosecco is only about 11%.Performance doesn't seem to be affected. Pints of cider affect me more these days. Don't think my body likes the quantity of liquid or sugar.

leftorrightnow · 18/01/2025 18:09

I probabaly have on average 1 - 2 beers and one glass of wine a week. If going to party (rarely) or out, may have 2-3 drinks a night. My drinking is totally tied to others - DH drinks quite a bit and have at times been drinking too much, he’s now at 1-2 beers most nights with some nights with no drinking and a lot of drink if at at party or dinner, unless he’s driving. Usually the beers I drink is me sipping on his drinks or having one beer w him.

I have a job where I’m often at receptions and dinners so that’s where the approx one glass of wine or bubbly a week comes from.

Plantmumfailure · 18/01/2025 18:10

It varies a lot for me. Last week I drank half a bottle of wine at the weekend and the week before that I didn't drink anything. But this weekend I've got more on socially, so I had 3 x g&ts last night and will have a glass of wine or two tonight. Possibly another one tomorrow lunchtime when we're seeing friends, but then I likely won't drink for the next couple of weeks.

I feel fine about my level of drinking. I think it works out at less than 14 units a week.

Ideally I'd not drink at all of course, but then ideally I'd be able to run 10k and wouldn't eat sugar etc etc.

Ffs, so I'm the only one in there 'ere parts who necks a bottle of wine every night then 😆

I don't really drink anything else though. And yes I have a problem blah blah. But I'm okay with it at the moment.

I'm with you on this! I am amazed by the amount of people who are teetotal in this post, it doesn't reflect my social network at all. And I buy naice ham and everything 🤣

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 18/01/2025 18:12

Currently or over the years? 😁

In my youth I'd go out Friday night, party all weekend and crawl out of bed Monday morning to get ready for work with the hangover from hell.

Then I stopped drinking for a few years.

Then I'd drink on special occasions eg birthdays, Christmas etc.

Then a few years of not bothering.

At the moment I only drink when my sister stays over which is about once a month. We polish off a bottle of vodka between us. I'm 51.

RainbowColouredRainbows · 18/01/2025 18:12

I will go months without drinking any, then I'll get given a bottle of red and remember how much I love the numb-brain feeling it gives me and I'll end up treating myself to a glass of wine after work most days and probably two at the weekend, but never enough that I'm drunk or feel effects in the morning. And then randomly I'll just not buy any at the supermarket and not bother for months again. I'm the same if I go out-out too, I'll probably have 2 or 3 singles and then be on soft drinks because I know my limits.

KevinAndTracy · 18/01/2025 18:13

Yep @Allschoolsareartschools , that all sounds very familiar

I remember Taboo and Mirage

And Hooch in the late 90s!

biscuitsandbooks · 18/01/2025 18:15

I don't drink - lost my tolerance to it when I started SSRI's about a decade ago and have never really enjoyed it since. I'm now on a new medication that doesn't interact well with drink either.

Grapewrath · 18/01/2025 18:15

i haven’t drank alcohol since I had my first child, so almost 23 years.
Im 45, three older children and have a ft job
I honestly don’t miss it but equally happy to join friends at a boozy dinner and really enjoy it

Daisy12Maisie · 18/01/2025 18:16

Nothing at home. If I'm out with friends or partner I will have a drink or two if I fancy it but I don't go out very often. If I do drink I like wine or flavoured cider.

JBJ · 18/01/2025 18:16

I don't drink at home on my own, so can go a couple of months without having one, but I do struggle a bit with not having an off button when I do go out! Over winter, I don't drink much at all, as I probably go out once or twice over Christmas and then I'm usually driving, but over summer, I do a lot of camping/festivals with friends and probably drink more than I should!

And bacardi breeders and v2 and smirnoff ice and metz.
I used to work on a pub in the 90s. Men were always a pint (or 2) of fosters. Unless they were younger or better off, when it was the expensive carlsberg in the big shiny silver pump.
A couple would be a pint + vodka lemonade or pint+ alcopop (do you want a glass or a straw?).

hazelnutvanillalatte · 18/01/2025 18:20

Barely anything. If I go out I'll have two drinks. Don't drink at home. Never wake up thinking oh I wish I had drunk more last night

Tarantella6 · 18/01/2025 18:20

I always wish I did drink, then I could give up alcohol and lose weight.

I eat chocolate like a lot of people drink - except chocolate is socially acceptable to eat at your desk at 11am!

WhySoManySocks · 18/01/2025 18:24

Just like on the calorie counting and how much do you earn threads, you will get massively non-representative replies. I do not know what you are hoping to achieve other than to demonstrate poor numeracy skills.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 18/01/2025 18:25

Anyone remember pedigree? I used to drink that as a young un. God knows why. The morning after bathroom visit was NOT worth it!

I remember taboo, hooch etc. It was considered the posh stuff when you were all down the park and the other kids were drinking bottles of cheap cider.

I was not a classy teenager. 🤣

DogMaths · 18/01/2025 18:26

Before children, I’d have a few drinks once or twice a week.

When our children were young, I didn’t drink at all for many years. As they got older, I’d have a few drinks at events sometimes.

Now peri menopausal, I feel rubbish for days if drink so I never do.

TerroristToddler · 18/01/2025 18:26

Genuinely rarely drink. Even when out with friends I usually don't bother or maybe have just one G&T. I never feel like drinking at home so we don't even really have alcohol in the house.

FoxtonFoxton · 18/01/2025 18:27

Nothing for years. No issues, I just don't enjoy alcohol or feeling drunk. I like a malibu and coke, but not so much I'd be bothered to order one.

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 18/01/2025 18:28

I like a single drink on a Friday and Saturday evening - usually a cider, or g&t. Incredibly rare I drink more than that.

DH has beers about 3 x a week and that’s usually 4 beers. Very occasionally he may have a Jack & Coke.

My DF is an alcoholic, sober 3 years now, and I find heavy drinking and/or drunk people quite difficult. I’d struggle if DH was a heavy drinker but it’s very rare he gets even mildly drunk.

Lemonademoney · 18/01/2025 18:29

I have a bottle of wine a week so five glasses - usually over the weekend. I don’t tend to drink at all Monday to Thursday. I have noticed recently that I feel quite tired the day after if I’ve had more than two glasses so am debating cutting down, it is something I genuinely enjoy though.

1clavdivs · 18/01/2025 18:32

I used to have a drink a couple of times a week, but since perimenopause coincided with the cost of living increase, I've gone right off wine and I just don't want to spend money on alcohol anymore. DP is teetotal anyway so if I was drinking I'd be drinking alone. These days I'll have an alcoholic drink (gin & tonic usually) perhaps once every couple of months.

Hoochyvida · 18/01/2025 18:33

I hardly ever drink. The odd glass of fizz - maybe 3 times a year. My husband is the same.

I was a big binge drinker from about 17 to 30. Every week was a big night out and monster hangover. Uni was every other night.

I just naturally lost interest. I was never an at home drinker as I don't really like the taste, I prefer soft drinks. I would drink to go out and have fun.

Unlike the posters dismissing those of us who don't drink/hardly drink 'because it's mumsnet and it's not real' I know plenty on both sides of the bottle. I have some friends and family who drink loads and some who hardly drink at all.

MiniPumpkin · 18/01/2025 18:34
