How much do you really drink?

It’s an interesting topic, and I think lots of people wonder how their drinking compares to others. For us, my husband tends to have a beer or two most evenings, maybe a couple more on weekends if we’re relaxing or watching something together. I rarely drink during the week but will usually have 2-3 glasses of wine spread over Friday and Saturday evenings.

If we’re out with friends or at a party (which is rare now we’re parents), we can definitely drink more, maybe a bottle of wine each or cocktails, depending on the occasion. But that only happens if we’ve got a babysitter and plenty of time to recover the next day!

I’m genuinely curious to hear about others drinking habits and whether this is typical or not. No judgement at all—just keen to know! For context we have one child and are late 30s.

I used to drink a lot.. too much. Less in my twenties than my late teens, but still too much. I have a problematic relationship with alcohol and have no ‘off’ switch on nights out/at events. I thought I could get it under control by just cutting down but I can’t and won’t ever be able to I don’t think, so I went completely sober at the end of April this year… then got pregnant so that’s helped form the habit of not drinking properly! Hoping it’ll stick. I’ve every intention of remaining teetotal anyway.

I drink loads. Once a week, nothing the other 6 days, so I guess I am a binge drinker. I have a very problematic relationship with alcohol, no problem admitting that.

Exactly the same, drink one night a week and I'd easily finish the bottle of wine, could easily drink another night but I don't because id be wrecked by Monday. Suppose om a binge drinker too

HikingforScenery · 18/01/2025 17:48

I don’t really drink.
About once or twice a year, I might have a bottle of low alcohol cider.

squidgie · 18/01/2025 17:48

30-40 units a week.

Pretty much everyone I know in real life drinks more than you're supposed to and on a regular basis.

Agree, just noone on mumsnet😀

LuluBlakey1 · 18/01/2025 17:50

I really only have a drink on Christmas Day- champagne and dry white wine.

If I have two drinks during the rest if the year that would be it. I am not a teetotaller, it just doesn't cross my mind to drunk these days.

user2848502016 · 18/01/2025 17:50

I probably drink about the same amount as you, except some weekends I don't bother. Like I didn't drink last night because I knew I had to get up early this morning so it feels like a waste to open a bottle of wine now so I will probably end up having an alcohol free weekend.
DH goes through phases of either not drinking at all or having a couple of beers a night on the weekend or sometimes sharing a bottle of wine with me.

Wheelbarrowracer · 18/01/2025 17:51

I appear to be one of those rates people (although not in rl) who actually likes the taste of alcohol and for whom non alcoholic drinks really aren't a good substitute.

Definitely drank less when dc were little. Currently it's probably 1.5 bottles over the weekend, Friday to Sun. Unless I'm out. In which case, it depends what mood I'm in. Had an accidental pint this afternoon cos a ramble took a turn to a pub. I'm not strict, so if I fancy a drink another time I'll have one.

I'm in my 40s, so According to mn , I've probably only got a couple of years before I hate alcohol and go tee total.

Simonjt · 18/01/2025 17:51

Variable, I have a beer every saturday and sunday, if I go out out I’ll drink quite a lot, which is maybe on average 7-8 times a year. I do drink a fair bit of non-alcoholic beer.

HouseofHolbein · 18/01/2025 17:51

So far today I have had 5 pints and 2 double whiskeys. Heading out to see a band shortly so there will be more alcohol and probably chips before the end of the night 😊

MyIvyGrows · 18/01/2025 17:52

I like a drink but don’t miss it if I don’t have it. I have a few if I go out. Perhaps a glass of wine in an evening if I feel like it. I’ve not felt like it since New Year’s Day, though. Having a pub lunch tomorrow so might have a couple.

DaDaDoDaiDa · 18/01/2025 17:54

I haven't been drinking for a while but when I was, I would say two bottles of wine a week (or equivalent in beer) on average.

ElfAndSafetyBored · 18/01/2025 17:55

I’m away with a friend who is currently occupied with something. I’ve already had two small glasses wine whilst I kill time waiting for her. I want a third. I feel I might be judged. Debating if I care.

StarDolphins · 18/01/2025 17:55

I love a drink & I’m a creature of habit, I have 2-3 glasses of Prosecco every Friday, Saturday & Sunday & I really enjoy it!

Berlinlover · 18/01/2025 17:57

Teetotal since 2009. I was diagnosed with cancer in September, 2023 so I know for definite I will never touch a drop of alcohol again.

FuzzyPuffling · 18/01/2025 17:58

A glass of prosecco at Christmas and a shandy in the summer.

So about two units a year.

Same! I drink WAY more than people are saying on here but absolutely WAY less than everyone I know irl!

AppropriateAdult · 18/01/2025 18:00

I'd have a small glass of wine maybe 4 or 5 nights a week at home - it's only ever one glass, so a bottle lasts me for the whole week (or until I chuck the remainder out). DH rarely drinks at home.

A few times a year I might have more to drink if out with friends or DH, but even then I'd rarely have more than 3 drinks - I get migraines these days which can be triggered by alcohol, and it's absolutely not worth it.

Haven't been drunk in more than a decade, I'd say. Would have had frequent very drunken nights at uni and could turn up fresh as a daisy to lectures the next day - my body just doesn't work like that any more...

Same here including myself.

Onetimeonly2024 · 18/01/2025 18:01

A lot less than I used to. It really crept up during lockdown and I could easily drink half a bottle of wine or more per night. I don’t really get hangovers, I’m still fine to get up for the gym at 5am etc but I know it’s not good for me, so I stopped and I don’t miss it. Currently having a fruit tea!
I don’t drink at home anymore, other than special occasions (Christmas/birthday) and only drink when I go out, so maybe once or max twice a month? Can still easily drink a few cocktails and a bottle of when then though and still don’t get hangovers (unless I drink cheap shit wine, which I try to avoid!)

cowboyhats · 18/01/2025 18:01

None and I feel so much better. I used to be able to easily put away a bottle of pinot a night until I entered peri and it started to take me 3 days to recover, ramped up my anxiety to nightmarish levels and made me feel really bloated and lethargic. Even 1 glass still does that to me now so I stopped. I have lots more energy now and look much younger.

TickyTacky · 18/01/2025 18:02

I'm in my mid thirties, married with two children. I'll have one or two drinks if I go out to an event (max 2-3 times a year) but that's it. Husband doesn't drink at all. I'm on lots of medication that makes alcohol react in a strange way so it's not worth the hassle, especially as I don't particularly enjoy being drunk. It ruins my nightly reading before bed 😂

GrumpyWombat · 18/01/2025 18:03

Hardly ever! 37 with 3 kids

I'm 50 and probably drink between 15 and 35 units a week depending on social life. Being honest I have never grown out of binge drinking.

I have 3 or 4 alcohol free days a week and do have periods when I don't drink so much if things are quiet socially.

I ashamed to say that I can easily drink the equivalent of a bottle of prosecco plus a few cocktails or shots if I'm with friends on a weekend evening.

Same. I'm 54 & I think our age group was really targeted with alcohol, fashion & advertising.
When I was 18 some of the first drinks to be targeted at women came on the market eg Taboo, Mirage & Bezique (if anyone remembers those!)
We were the prime target age for the 'Ladette' culture throughout the 90s where there was simply no such thing as binge drinking, it was just called a night out.
By the late 90s wine had become really popular in pubs so that was the strong drink of choice. Oh, flavoured vodka bars too.
Early 2000s I was pregnant or bringing up little ones & took a break. But I was back on the going out scene just as prosecco became mega popular which it still is.
Then gin became fashionable & completely targeted to our age group with fun slogans etc. Now whisky is having a moment & soon it'll be something else.
Not making excuses but it's true.
