How much do you really drink?

It’s an interesting topic, and I think lots of people wonder how their drinking compares to others. For us, my husband tends to have a beer or two most evenings, maybe a couple more on weekends if we’re relaxing or watching something together. I rarely drink during the week but will usually have 2-3 glasses of wine spread over Friday and Saturday evenings.

If we’re out with friends or at a party (which is rare now we’re parents), we can definitely drink more, maybe a bottle of wine each or cocktails, depending on the occasion. But that only happens if we’ve got a babysitter and plenty of time to recover the next day!

I’m genuinely curious to hear about others drinking habits and whether this is typical or not. No judgement at all—just keen to know! For context we have one child and are late 30s.

I’ve read several articles and listened to podcasts covering the subject.

That may be true - but I still don't believe you read the link you posted, as your summary is very misleading.

The article's conclusion says "So what is the conclusion? According to Rimm, if you don't drink, there is no reason to begin. If you only occasionally drink, don't increase your intake for health reasons. But for the casual or regular drinker, it's fine to enjoy an alcoholic beverage — in moderation."

greengreyblue · 20/01/2025 22:41

I did read it.
What seems clear in most research supporting the health benefits of alcohol is that the amount is key. Light to moderate intake remains the best
Look, I can cut and paste too!

greengreyblue · 20/01/2025 22:45

This is just the first article I found online. But there are many. The Mediterranean diet includes wine and is widely seen as the most healthy diet.

I am a pretty regular drinker of alcohol & would happily have a glass every night. For health reasons I usually have 2 dry nights a week (Mon & Tue), sometimes Wed as well. I’ll have a G&T or a glass of wine on Thursday, 2 or 3 on Friday & Sunday and a bit more on a Saturday…a cocktail half a bottle of wine if I’m at home with DH or half a dozen G&Ts if I’m out.
I don’t really get hangovers…just get a bit tired as i never sleep so well.
I’m going to cut it down a bit to Fri & Sat for the next few weeks though as I want to lose some weight!

Yes, I can see you have now read it.

In my 60s I've ended up teetotal, or thereabouts. In my 20s and 30s I drank more than was good for me. Not alcohol dependent but it affected my mood unite badly. I then drank very little for a long time, but now as the result of a bowel condition i don't drink at all. I don't miss it.

This is mumsnet OP where if you drink more than half a glass of wine a week you're overdoing it. Most people will probably come on to tell you either they don't drink, or they drink 3 times a year or something so I don't think you'll get a wide range of views

This gets trotted out, virtually word for word, every time this question gets asked on MN

I can only presume it comes from people who are actually worried they are drinking more than is sensible or healthy.

At the very least it would seem by people who struggle with the concept that other people might behave differently from them.

I also agree with pp who said we are all likely to know "people like us", so, in the same way you think it is normal to drink at home every night, as everyone you know does, lots of us think it is pretty normal to only drink alcohol at a social occasion - Christmas, parties, weddings, special meal out, etc.

I know! It’s as though they think that we think we are smug and / or lying about not drinking a lot of alcohol. But honestly, alcohol is just not a huge part of our lives: I don’t think in any way shape or form that this is a moral choice or that I’m better than anyone else.

Really should change the thread to why do you not drink... Never saw so many non drinkers replying to a thread asking how much do you drink, so funny!!

The question is how much do you really drink. Why is it difficult to understand that nothing is an answer to that question. I haven't seen that many people giving reasons why they don't drink. What I have seen is some people who do drink getting very annoyed that others don't drink and are posting about it. If you are happy with your drinking habits then why does other people saying they don't drink impact you. Deal with your own issues.

I realised yesterday that I was accidentally most of the way through dry January! I don't drink at home. We have wine in - I use it in cooking and a fully stocked booze cupboard (also used in cooking) but there is just one specific cocktail that I enjoy and it's a ball-ache to make so I wait until we go out. If the restaurant doesn't do cocktails then I just drink coke. Normally I'll have 2 cocktails every 2 weeks as that's when we go out but circumstances mean we won't get an evening out this month.
My DP is tea-total. Neither of us are past alcoholics we just aren't bothered about alcohol. Cheese on the other hand......

SpringleDingle · 23/01/2025 15:48

To add - I was a proper party animal in my youth. I remember the Hooch and the alcopops. Mad Dog, Snakebite and black. I drank enough to get chucked off my Uni course (and I carried on drinking after). However these days I just don't want to deal with the after affects, I don't have enough days left to waste any being hung over!

Verv · 23/01/2025 16:33

I have a Baileys Christmas Eve/day and NY and other than that probably 2 G&T's a year.
Could go without and not bat an eyelid.

Sacredhandbag · 23/01/2025 16:35

Every single night in December.

The rest of the year? Not at all

Weird, I know.

But your post was annoying and it makes you sound as if you have a problem Have a drink if you want one. Nobody cares. Brew

Whotenanny · 23/01/2025 21:43

For me it varies with the seasons. I'm much more likely to drink regularly in winter. I've been having a measure of a peaty whisky pretty much every night since NY. It's a very small amount and I drink it slowly, but alcohol nonetheless.

In summer I drink a couple of ciders a week, and in the autumn my attention turns to red wine. I'd probably have a bottle of wine a week.

My DH doesn't drink all that much, but he also enjoys the occasional whisky and a good chat.

travelallthetime · 23/01/2025 21:50

I love a glass of wine but I find it makes me sweat in the night if I have more than one glass, sometimes it’s worth it but most of the time it isn’t. pisses me off to be honest and hoping I grow out of it 🤣

dannyufcfan · 23/01/2025 21:54

I have not touched a drink of alcohol since I was 14/15. Now, 42 and never will.
