How much do you really drink?

It’s an interesting topic, and I think lots of people wonder how their drinking compares to others. For us, my husband tends to have a beer or two most evenings, maybe a couple more on weekends if we’re relaxing or watching something together. I rarely drink during the week but will usually have 2-3 glasses of wine spread over Friday and Saturday evenings.

If we’re out with friends or at a party (which is rare now we’re parents), we can definitely drink more, maybe a bottle of wine each or cocktails, depending on the occasion. But that only happens if we’ve got a babysitter and plenty of time to recover the next day!

I’m genuinely curious to hear about others drinking habits and whether this is typical or not. No judgement at all—just keen to know! For context we have one child and are late 30s.

Lifelong non-drinker, not for religious or health reasons initially, just never started and now don't want to - I'm 56.

Dearie me....all these competitive people having a teaspoon every ten years

I love me G&Ts

I used to drink too much, military life was based round drink 20 years ago. For the last 12 years i haven't drunk that much, probably a dozen drinks a year, in the last 12 months i have had one glass of Champagne.

TankFlyBossWalkJamNittyGrittyIAmFromAMidSizeCity · 18/01/2025 17:30

Up until 6 years ago I would be out at least twice a month and drink lots, probably 10+ units of alcohol on a night out, I've never been one for drinking at home though.

Now life has changed vastly and I maybe have one or 2 a year.

58 with two DC 19 and 21 plus hubby works away.

i probably have three or four a year absolute max. That’s glasses, not bottles. Hubby has maybe two or three half pints a year. The kids rarely drink either as usually driving and when not will just drink moderately.

RawBloomers · 18/01/2025 17:33

I have a half bottle of wine and a cocktail each week. If I have more one week I take off the next week’s allotment. Except on 6 occasions (Christmas, birthday, holiday, etc) in the year when I will have significantly more, along the lines of several cocktails, a bottle of wine and a large whisky.

I’m in my 50s, though and have cut down considerably in the last 15 years. In my 30s I used to drink a bottle and a half of wine and have several cocktails a week as standard and more once or twice a month when going out. It was fun and I enjoyed it, but with hindsight wish I’d been more moderate.

This is mumsnet OP where if you drink more than half a glass of wine a week you're overdoing it. Most people will probably come on to tell you either they don't drink, or they drink 3 times a year or something so I don't think you'll get a wide range of views

Personally I vary from month to month - tend to drink more over summer and in the run up to Xmas. On my 'lower drinking months' I'll probably drink twice a week, maybe a few G&Ts or margaritas and several glasses of wine. For a few months of the year I'll have 2-3 week stretches where i don't drink at all just to have a proper break

On higher drinking months I might drink 3-4 times a week, again G&T or margarita and then some wine. Sometimes I fancy a cider. Lots of mulled wine in December

We host alot of dinner parties and get together with friends often at their places - always a fair bit of prosecco and wine. Also meet up with friends for cocktails and go out for dinner quite often too

Very similar to me!

ForeverPombear · 18/01/2025 17:34

I'm teetotal. I don't even know the last time I had a drink. I'm mid 30's and grew up with an alcoholic parent and I just have no interest in drinking.

Bob02 · 18/01/2025 17:36

I don't drink regularly. I might have a cider or a cocktail (strawberry daiquiri or a mojito) on a special occasion, but that's once in a blue moon. Over Christmas, I had half a cider during the whole festive period.

In my 20 and early 30s , I drank a glass, or three, of wine every night with my meal. I stopped drinking and smoking to do IVF at around 33. It took 7 years to have DC1 so I spent a long time not drinking. Now my body just can't handle it. It's not worth the headache after.

I must admit I don't understand why people who are teetotal are responding. If you don't drink at all then why reply on a thread about how much you drink! Strange.

Goldenmemories · 18/01/2025 17:37

I'm also teetotal. 2 years sober, best decision ever.

RaraRachael · 18/01/2025 17:39

Recently teetotal as I've finally realised I just don't like alcohol having tried everything over the years.

OH is same age and and drinks far too much red wine.

ApolloandDaphne · 18/01/2025 17:39

Age 62 and love a couple of glasses of wine several times a week.

70sShmeventies · 18/01/2025 17:39

Depends. Ranges from nothing in the week and a drink or two max Fri and Sat night to nightly. I’m currently drinking a glass of wine a night bar one day a week. Its my only vice but I’m weaning myself off the Christmas excess and recognise I easily fall into the habit of slowly adding to my intake i.e. a small glass turns to a large and then to two.

TokyoSushi · 18/01/2025 17:39

Virtually nothing, maybe about 5/6 drinks per month, maybe less, have always been the same!

okydokethen · 18/01/2025 17:39

I drink on average one bottle of wine across two or three nights, sometimes nothing all week. When I go out I drink two glasses of wine.

I used to drink every night, while making dinner, with dinner and after dinner could easily drink a bottle an evening and grew up with this being normal.

I'm 40, I get tired and achey if I drink too much and I really don't want to be like my mum and auntie who drink to excess.

Redcandlescandal · 18/01/2025 17:40

I very rarely drink alcohol. I have way too much fun without it!!!

Maybe five or six nights a year. A glass of wine or a cocktail.

Because 0 is a whole number

coralsky · 18/01/2025 17:41

Maximum of one bottle of red over a weekend for me. Quite often just 2 glasses and I'll use the rest for cooking.
DP loves booze, he'll have 4 large cans every Friday and Saturday so 8 pints per weekend.

Judellie · 18/01/2025 17:41

Nothing, as teetotal. I have never liked the taste of alcohol. DD and DS are coming up 18 and 21, also teetotal as they dislike the taste.
DH Might have a couple of beers (Morretti or sthg)when he meets his mates on a Tuesday, the rest of the time he doesn't drink alcohol either.

SereneCapybara · 18/01/2025 17:42

Doing Dry Jan, which I do every year, but outside of that - usually 1 small 120ml glass of white wine a night, maybe a second glass on Saturdays and Sundays. If having friends over for dinner, or out to dinner with friends, maybe 3-5 glasses over an evening - but that's rare. We tend to go out and see shows rather than sit around drinking. But I can feel my body wanting less these days. On NYE I had 3 glasses of champagne and one small glass of red over the entire night and really felt it next day.

EmeraldDreams73 · 18/01/2025 17:42

I've never been too bothered, always ended up being the driver as I'd only ever have had one or two anyway. Dh is more of a drinker than me (not difficult). I now have a g&t or a Baileys probably once every couple of weeks, whereas it used to be every few months.

He only drinks 2 nights a week but sinks half a bottle of whiskey when he does, which I think is far too much. He's always fine next day, but never drinks when he has to get up for work/drive. When I first met him he had fallen into terrible habits and was drinking far too much after caring for his first wife with early onset dementia, then grieving her loss. A condition of being with him was that he reined it RIGHT in and get any help necessary to do that. He is much happier with the current status quo. I have no issue with the 2 nights a week but would much prefer him to drink less than he does on those nights.

Ifitaintgotnoswing · 18/01/2025 17:42

Typically 20-25 units per week at home
will be more if we go out and run up to Christmas etc
used to be more than this in the past

ElfAndSafetyBored · 18/01/2025 17:42

Early fifties. Drank a lot through twenties and thirties. I don’t drink in the week unless I go out to meet a friend (then 4 gins OR 4 wines tops and will only do that once or twice a month).

But Friday and Saturday I will want a drink no matter where I am. Is that habit? 4 or 5 drinks is probably my normal limit now.

Big night out can be messy though.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 18/01/2025 17:43

1.5 bottles of wine on a weekend or 35ml of spirits
