I'm quite looking forward to this. And wondered if anyone else was. I don't expect so but thought I would ask anyway!

@cardibach that's OK.
I understand that not every poster on here is interested.
It's actually quite a huge subject and I'd suggest googling Trump. There is also an interesting documentary on u tube. He's a very controversial character and he's come into power at a very critical moment for the world.. Changes in oil /electric, Russia /Ukraine, Israel /gaza and so on.

Ai, race to the moon...

He's not a classic diplomatic politician and doesn't speak as such. He's unpredictable and some say unstable so yes it's definitely a moment in history.

I don’t need to google trump. I know more than I want to about him. He’s not interesting to me, he’s repellant. Why do so many peo0le who like him think those who don’t are ignorant? It’s very condescending. I’d agree he’s unstable. That doesn’t make his inauguration historic or in any way interesting either.

It's fascinating what I've seen already and I think it's important to watch

Why is it important

I'd love to see any evidence for that bizarre assertion.

The entirety of his support base.

BettyBardMacDonald · 20/01/2025 00:07

Anyone who thinks he's a leader, a savior, an intelligent person or even remotely competent is incredibly naive.

He has nothing in his mind but to satisfy base instincts like thirst, hunger, revenge and self-aggrandizement. Like his poorly educated (his words) followers, he iis totally manipulated by people with extreme socio-political views or just economic agendas.

What good things did Joe Biden do in office that directly made the lives of US citizen better? I can't remember a single thing

More Americans have health insurance than ever before.
Violent crime is down.
Income inequality has fallen.
Real-terms wages have risen at their fastest level ever.

No one actually believes he has any kind of real power so they?
I am terrified of whoever is manipulating this senile old man, however they are unlikely to be in evidence at the inauguration.

Are you talking about sleepy joe? Time to go.. who do you think was manipulating Biden’s strings lmfao

StrawberryWater · 20/01/2025 00:57

Honestly?

I’d rather shit in my own hands and clap.

Tekbrobillionaire · 20/01/2025 01:04

EnjoyingTheSilence · 18/01/2025 09:26

Exactly how is he going to be a great president? If you’re rich, white and male maybe. But women’s right, forget it. Poor people, will just bet poorer. Non white people, more abuse.

I think it’s an absolute disaster, what was once a wonderful country has been absolutely trashed.

The country has been utterly trashed by the democrats and the electorate know it. Americans are not stupid.

Americans are rightly concerned about their economy, inflation, illegal immigration, and are desperate for policy change. Legal immigration is encouraged, something that those suffering from TDS conveniently forget.

Women, poor people, “non white” people and young people all voted for him. Overwhelmingly. Why do you think that is?

Trump won both Electoral College and popular vote, first Republican since 1988.
He flipped key states like Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. I don’t think he gaf if “mumsnet” doesn’t like him lmao.

This

Naive at best. Wholly delusional and wilfully ignorant to my mind.

I watched and had second hand embarrassment when he was speaking. It was beyond cringeworthy.

Dementia may be a possibility I'd imagine.

Ilovetea33 · 20/01/2025 02:18

I'm surprised so many people have the time. I'll still be at work.

GreenTeaLikesMe · 20/01/2025 02:22

Unfortunately it's the wrong time of day over in Japan. I'd love to watch it in a pub so I can boo loudly.

I have checked the demographics, and, although the Democratic majority in these groups was reduced from previous years, it is NOT true that they voted overwhelmingly for Trump.

53% of women; 85% of black voters; 67% of all non-white voters; and 54% of 18-29-year-olds voted for Harris.

Among voters with a family income of less than $50,000 a year, the vote split 50-50. And Trump got just under 50% of the vote as a whole (Harris got a bit over 48; there was also an independent candidate). I accept that Trump was legitimately elected; but it wasn't an overwhelming majority,

It looked like a happy event last night.

I was struck by the optimism. Haven't seen that since Tony Blair swept into Downing Street.

You mean blasting out D:reams Things Can Only Get Better at an out going PM, while actually meaning...we always knew it would get much, much worse... doesn't count?

Really. I remember watching TB and his speech. It was a strange thing and very infectious even the cynical media and traditional tory voters were impressed. And it was good for a time.

Mn does sound angry in comparison today, for the most part anyway. I don’t think those in the US celebrating will take much notice of the reams of posts on Trump

"Overwhelmingly"? Bollocks. He got 49.8% of the total vote and Harris got 48.3%. For him to have an "overwhelming" majority of women, non-whites, and young people, it means the white male boomers must have voted in huge numbers for Harris. 🤔

The result was closer than the Brexit referendum. Trump might call it a landslide but it wasn't even that at the level of the electoral college.

There is no way he'll invade Greenland. As if. What a joke. He just says things for attention.

At the moment Greenland is a constituent country of the Kingdom of Denmark. Interestingly Greenland has a Prime Minister which has declared they are working towards independence from Denmark, and thereby loosening those ties. The Danish Parliament would have to approve Greenland’s independence, it seems. I don’t know if Greenland would swap complete independence, or swapping being a constituent country of the Kingdom of Denmark for stronger ties with the US (if it was ever offered). Their Prime Minister has said he may be open to more co-operation with the US. Greenland may be quite happy that their new desirability will at the very least give them a stronger position with Denmark.

Greenland is ready to cooperate with Trump, Premier says

Greenland PM Egede in recent weeks has stepped up his rhetoric on loosening ties with Denmark and has indicated a referendum on independence could be coming in the next election period.

It's bizarre that people voted trump in.

But we can also say that it's totally bizarre that people in the UK agree that one single family (the royal family) is better than everyone else.

It is totally bizarre.

It isn't bizarre that people voted the Democrats out.

Not everyone in the UK agrees that one single family is better than everyone else.

I think those two statements are called 'generalisations' which are strictly prohibited on here.

The majority of people in the UK agree that one family is better than everyone else.

If they didn't agree with it, they would have a revolution to get rid of the royal family.
