AIBU to think TikTok should be banned in the UK too?

The Sureme Court has upheld a decision to ban tiktok in the US. Am I unreasonable in thinking the UK should have done the same yesterday? Always puts in mind the opium wars, I'm sure some are more than happy (justifiably so even) to let Western youth utterly rot their minds

I have got the best recipes from it. Learnt about people's everyday lives in America. I find it great. Wholesome and funny.

Yes, this before TT any day!

Tiktok is done on an algorithm so if all your seeing is weird shit that's on you

The live streamers I saw were absolutely nuts 🙋🤣. It was horribly addictive. The worst one was living room raving lady chewing her face off shouting ' smash my doors in' non stop. I do miss her a tad.

Must audit those algorithms of mine.....😬

spuddy4 · 17/01/2025 19:52

I don't see it getting banned when all of the main political parties have accounts on there.

Yes 🤣 🤣 because iv never seen anything like that

PeppyGreenFinch · 17/01/2025 20:04

There’s no difference between TikTok / Insta / Snapchat / YouTube.

If yoy object to one you should object to them all.

Disappointedyogi · 17/01/2025 20:09

Noooo, I love tiktok! I'm especially enjoying the Red Note/CEO drama.

Loads of Tiktok users have migrated over to Red Note, a Chinese owned video sharing app. One Chinese user posted a welcome video to American 'tiktok refugees' giving them a warm welcome and sharing a few tips on how to use the app. For some reason, tiktok users just collectively decided this guy was the CEO of Red Note. Fox News even reported the story! Turns out he was just a random guy that lives in Canada 😂

MoodySky · 17/01/2025 20:11

It's banned in the US because of their blatant racism towards the Chinese.

This would be a more interesting thread, op, if you explained why you think it should be banned. Unless your sole reason is that it rots youths' minds? In which case surely that is down to the creators and not the platform?

I think I did explain - do you know about the Opium Wars?

Mine is dominated by fish keeping videos (Amy and the wet pets is to blame entirely for that), drawing/craft tutorials, musical theatre and animal videos.

I'm more at risk of buying a giant fish tank and trying to raise box fish or cow fish than I am of doing dangerous challenges or harming other people.

Bargaintools · 17/01/2025 20:42

Mine is full of cruises, travel, make up and a fabulous lady called Fiona who does Wild Camping.

adviceneeded1990 · 17/01/2025 20:47

I’d support a stringent ban for under 16s of all social media. Terrible for self esteem, brain development, friendships, almost everything really! I’m not sure it’s reasonable to dictate or ban what an adult spends their time on though, if someone with a fully developed brain wants to scroll TikTok who am I or anyone else to stop them!

Shoezembagsforever · 17/01/2025 20:55

The US are only going to ban TikTok if they can't buy it from the Chinese - they apparently have until the end of Sunday. It may well get sold to them.

JasperTheDoll · 17/01/2025 19:30

I think you may be the first person on here who has picked up on the Jasper reference!

I am a BIG fan of Jasper the Doll

ViciousCurrentBun · 17/01/2025 21:00

Mine is full of historians, recipes, comedians , cats and the odd weird thing. I think if you have any cognitive thinking skills you are fine. It shouldn’t be seen by young children though.

Edit I forgot dumpster diving and racoons, I will miss the American raccoon clips.

The creators use the platform to share the aforementioned mind rotting content. So, whilst they are also to blame, it really is the fault of the platform due to the absolute shite it promotes and encourages.

My daughter joined during one of the lockdowns (on my phone). She used it for baking and craft ideas. I never saw anything toxic on it. It reflects your interests.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 17/01/2025 21:12

So much ignorance displayed on this thread 🫣 along with people admitting they can't parent their children properly.

It's hilarious and I love it so sod off.

TheAirfryerQueen · 17/01/2025 21:55

I was on it briefly, but there was so much guff to swipe through I gave up. Instagram is going the same way, tbh.

parsleydog · 17/01/2025 22:53

What's it got to do with the Opium Wars?

DecemberTulips · 17/01/2025 23:08

What we need is more government controls on what we can see and do in our lives.
It always, ALWAYS, works out for the best.

Please Mr Starmer ban everything and tell us how to think and feel.

....

By the by... I'd someone has a kid who is obsessed with tiktok.. turn the fucking thing off, take the thing away, bin it, burn it, learn that a kid crying, being upset, being bored, ot having a phone.. will not kill them..

PudPudDingDing · 17/01/2025 23:10

Would love to see it gone. Be a first nail in the coffin for many grifters aka influences hawking tat to people direct from China oh and all the stupid trends making people act thick as fuck for views.

Trainors · 17/01/2025 23:11

The algorithms are designed to get you addicted to scrolling by showing you exactly what you want to see in little snippets that hook you in. Absolutely poisonous for young minds.

Instagram reels work in exactly the same way now. I wouldn’t let my teen near either platform.

ParrotsAteThemAll · 17/01/2025 23:55

Anyone scared of TT, sign up and watch Aussie Fidan cutting up her marvellous massive salad “don’t worry about it”.

failing that, search MilotheChonk cat and thank me later.
