AIBU to think TikTok should be banned in the UK too?

The Sureme Court has upheld a decision to ban tiktok in the US. Am I unreasonable in thinking the UK should have done the same yesterday? Always puts in mind the opium wars, I'm sure some are more than happy (justifiably so even) to let Western youth utterly rot their minds

Tiktok is done on an algorithm so if all your seeing is weird shit that's on you

bookworm14 · 17/01/2025 19:07

I wish it would be banned if it would prevent idiotic parents in my DD’s class (Y5) allowing their 9 and 10 year old kids unrestricted access to it.

Yes, my Tiktok is roughly 50% TV show clips and 50% pets being adorable.

Mine is teaching tips and recipes which sums up my life.

Kinkyroots · 17/01/2025 19:11

What is astounding is the number of utterly uninteresting and untalented people going live and staring silently at the screen. And they have enough followers to go live!

zerogrey · 17/01/2025 19:13

I'd like to see social media banned for under 16s.

No, my cat has made me over £500 through his tiktok! You can't take his income away

Ha good one

Op I’m not on TikTok but I gather what I see on IG is often a repeat

Not sure about banning it

Doingtheboxerbeat · 17/01/2025 19:14

My TT is totally different to yours op - no dancing teens, or silly challenges because I'm a middle-aged woman 😒.

When you download the app rather than just googling it, then it becomes personalised - extremely personalised like my fyp knows me better than my own mother.

Let's not take things away just because you don't know how to use it.

people do know about algorithms? TikTok has all kinds of content. If yours is totally toxic or exclusively drivel by idiots then that's the content you've shown interest in.

People don't seem to grasp this. They seem to think you log on and automatically see sex, drugs and violence.

Bargaintools · 17/01/2025 19:15

It won’t be banned. Trump will step in or Biden will before Sunday. I like it.

EachandEveryone · 17/01/2025 19:15

Mine is full of drag queens and their surrogate babies, couples having their children taken into care. It’s diabolical.

Simonjt · 17/01/2025 19:18

Isn't the argument about the spyware the app puts on devices not the content? It's a national security issue not concern for welfare.

You mean the senator who didn’t realise that Singapore exists?

It must be something you have shown and interest in then. Mines full of recipes that I've found extremely useful, ASMR videos and videos about my favourite musicians. I've also managed to find some great TV shows to watch after seeing 30 second clips of them on there. So thank you TikTok for introducing me to From.

You need to jump start it with some searches on things like kittens and baby goats and spend time watching whole videos of kittens and baby goats and getting rid of the stuff you don't want to watch. Block accounts showing you shit.

i love Tiktok, i've been on it since 2020 (A lockdown discorvery) and i spend most evenings on there. Its funny, educational, entertaining and heartwarming. Its a good place to learn, to hear world news, and peoples views.

If you're not using it right, it will rot your brain, but to me, as someone with ADHD and a thirst for learning, its a gold mine.

Without it i'd miss all the animal rescues, farms, comedians, cleaning, rug washing, dog groomers, cat, horse, dog accounts, news.. and some pretty important mental health support.. like KC Davies "Strugglecare" that got me through some difficult times.

I've picked up new books, new hobbies, and new music on there.

The only 'brain rot' is not curating it to be what you need from it.

pointythings · 17/01/2025 19:23

My DC are on TikTok. One gets given content about marine biology and ecology, also poetry. Because that is what he has a history of looking for.

The other gets jewellery making videos.

Like anything else, including witchcraft, it isn't the tool - it's what you do with it. Want to solve the problem of dodgy videos on TikTok? You'll need to ban actual people for that to happen.

And of course...JaspertheDoll! I used to love Jasper.but he's disappeared from my fyp recently (and is about to disappear forever I guess).

I agree with 'don't ban it just because you don't understand it'. If the US really gave a fuck about its kids it could always ban guns and offer universal healthcare...

ticktickticktickBOOM · 17/01/2025 19:25

Yes ban it. It's a load of drivel and shite.

WinterBones · 17/01/2025 19:26

if all you're getting is drag queens and social services/abuse, then that is on you, you're watching/commenting/reacting, so it shows you more.

Tell it you're not interested, comment/share/react on what you do like and scroll past what you don't.

Simonjt · 17/01/2025 19:29

I quite like tiktok, I don’t use it a great deal, mine is all animals and a guy who lives in Iceland, my husbands is all rugby videos and Luigi Mangione.

JasperTheDoll · 17/01/2025 19:30

I think you may be the first person on here who has picked up on the Jasper reference!

Glitterblue · 17/01/2025 19:33

MrTumblesSpottyHag · 17/01/2025 18:02

I don't recognise the description of TikTok upthread. Mine is filled with funny animals, knowledgeable animal keepers, recipes and people who have done an amazing job losing loads of weight. Ooh and cleaning/organising ideas.
There are some really interesting people on there, it learns what you interact with though so if you're looking for awful stuff that's what it will show you!
Agree that I'd be much more productive if it got banned though! 🤣

Same! Mine is full of cute and funny animals, cleaning, babies, days in the life, recipes. I always thought it kind of tailored what you see to what you generally watch.

ArcticBells · 17/01/2025 19:33

I've never been on TikTok, feel I should sign up before it's banned. Bit like all the deleted posts on here, they're always gone before I've seen them

Thepurplepig · 17/01/2025 19:38

It is QVC on steroids, selling imported Chinese shit. The sooner it is erased off the face of the earth along with everything else exported from the human rights abusing back hole the better.

fromthevault · 17/01/2025 19:45

It's perfectly possible not to buy anything off tiktok shop, ever.

I am extremely cynical about the 'reasons' for the ban. I get a lot of political / social commentary content on my fyp and there's plenty of 'consciousness raising', for want of a better phrase, going on there. The reaction to Luigi Mangione was fascinating, for one.
