AIBU to think TikTok should be banned in the UK too?

The Sureme Court has upheld a decision to ban tiktok in the US. Am I unreasonable in thinking the UK should have done the same yesterday? Always puts in mind the opium wars, I'm sure some are more than happy (justifiably so even) to let Western youth utterly rot their minds

Who is gonna pay for that, pray tell ?

The company through revenue, the same way shops provide security paid for by revenue.

But you trust YouTube? 😂

Their use of the phrase "mainstream media" says it all.

Why are you framing that question in such a patronising way?

Of course Musk is part of the problem so it's not in his interests.

I'm not sure it's beyond the wit of these multi-billionaires to come up with some solution if they really wanted.

What do you mean? What’s wrong with using this phrase to differentiate between independent or emerging methods of accessing the news? Genuine question.

It's typically a phrase used by conspiracy theorist/qanon types.

Musk is trying to normalise the phrase 'legacy media'.

So your solution is to rely on Elon Musk to solve it ?

I repeat: who is going to pay for this "moderation" of which you speak ? You can re-accuse me of being patronising if you like. As you did before when you didn't answer.

If you want moderation, then you need to mandate it by law, and it will become a cost of doing business. And we all know what happens to business costs when bonuses are at stake - just look at Thames Water.

You could probably solve a lot of moderation problems if people had to pay £10 a month to access each social media platform. However my breath is not being held.

As in media that is regulated, fact checked and robust in its reporting rather than the wild west that is twitter?

It would be easy to enforce. You want your company to operate in our country you adhere to our laws and regulations.

As an aside "The Wild West" only existed for a couple of decades before it fell under the control of the law.

OK, so far so good.

Now enforce that.

Oh, it's all gone wrong.

ClassicalQueen · 19/01/2025 12:40

No, I don't think it needs to be banned. It's borderline censorship. How long before there are "security concerns" with other social media sites?

As I said before, the internet as a whole needs policing (and is to an extent). Other countries have blocked entire sites, so the technology is clearly there.

There are rules, which is why Zuckerberg's dumping of fact-checkers only applies to the US at the moment. The EU have tighter rules and it needs to go through a risk-analysis before he is allowed to do it for operations in the EU.

Have they ?

China is probably the poster child for that. And it's only achieved by ... well by being China.

If you want that level of control then you have to have ... well that level of control. Which I can assure you: you do not.

Cookie pop ups, only available to EU and UK users due to European regulations. GDPR for sites trading internationally is applicable when trading in the EU and UK. Look at sites like Reddit and their data rules, they have a set for USA and a set for EU and a set for UK. It can be done.

ManchesterLu · 19/01/2025 12:48

I think they need to crack down more about what goes on there but no, it shouldn't be banned. There are so many different sub communities on there. I have an art account - and I've just managed to get monetised in the last couple of weeks, so it would of course be my bloody luck if it got banned now.

unmemorableusername · 19/01/2025 12:48

I agree.

Is there a petition?

EasternStandard · 19/01/2025 12:51

Thebogopogopanpacificgrandprix · 19/01/2025 12:03

There's a middle ground. The internet needs policing, not just from hostile states but domestically from hackers, drug dealing and worse.

People will have to evidence China as a hostile state when the current gov is reaching out for investment. You san push for investment and claim it’s hostile.

To add your desired ban will fail as people move to Red Note.

Adamante · 19/01/2025 12:53

Ok. I think it's quite an efficient phrase myself. I wonder what would be an acceptable phrase to differentiate between traditional accessing of the news - newspapers, daily news programmes etc, and social media/podcasts/independent journalists then?

I was on it for about 4 weeks because my young teen joined it. I was losing my mind. We banned him and I deleted it. It is pure toxic poisonous shite. I'm very liberal minded but it's just the worst SMedia platform I've seen yet.

I don't want YouTube banned! This is now a good source of information for me. I don't trust the shit mainstream media feeds us.

Why would you trust anything on social media? Absolutely anyone can say absolutely anything.
Mainstream media has to follow some rules. Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good.
When someone says similar to your post I do worry that they moving into conspiracy theory territory.

The press/media and then online/social media but I generally refer to the agency so Reuters, BBC, Twitter etc

Mardiesmum · 19/01/2025 13:57

I use tiktok, and it's the most friendly heartwarming SM platform I've ever used.
That app has literally changed lives.

All thanks to their algorithm - you get more of what you engage in. So if your feed is full of nasty shite then maybe you should look at yourselves. If your children are watching too much, then you should give them boundaries, you know, parenting.

And no, it shouldn't be banned. This is still a free country, unlike the USA. Tiktok gathers less data than Meta.

All SM should be used wirh care, in moderation.
