Cinema Screening for Dogs

Pieceofpurplesky · 12/01/2025 23:20

My local cinema is having cinema screenings where you can take your dog along. So far they have had Wallace and Gromit and The Lion King.

AIBU or has the world gone mad?

I bet you never went to the cinema to start with.

Wrong. I live right next to one and go frequently.

ScarletWitchM · 13/01/2025 20:36

I know someone who works at a cinema and they have doggy friendly shows - they don’t clean any more thoroughly than the usual hoover around and have had a few times where people have gone to that screen at a non-dog screening and have had allergies to the dog hair left behind.
personally, I don’t hate dogs, but don’t get the human-ification of dogs that has become the norm. When I grew up we left our dog at home all the time and he was fine

Does it offer dog friendly screenings?

FoxInTheForest · 13/01/2025 20:37

Even ignoring the obvious issue where its going to put one cinema room out of general use at all because of allergies, it just seems pointless? Most peoples dogs behave worse than kids nowadays, it would be chaos.

Totally agree @ScarletWitchM

I agree. Why aren't people training their dogs to be okay at home alone for a few hours any more? Probably the same people who are sending their children to school still in nappies - can't be bothered.

Who disinfects the place after the piss and shit?

NoSoupForU · 13/01/2025 20:47

It isn't something I'd like to do but I've no issue with other people going and enjoying it. There's loads of things I don't want to do.

As for allergies, assistance dogs are permitted anywhere so there's always the risk of contamination.

RampantIvy · 13/01/2025 20:52

As has been pointed out already, assistance dogs aren't as prolific as the household pet mutt.

StealthMama · 13/01/2025 20:54

The cinema at a UK I firstly level has lots £5bb since Covid and recovery is not yet certain.

If we want cinemas to survive then they need to do more to attract people back in, and for some bringing their dog with them will do just that.

If you have an animal that’s pissing and shitting through a two hour cinema visit then you either need a trainer or a vet because neither is normal behaviour.

Why do some people assume that dog friendly means dogs running riot and pissing and shitting everywhere.

A PP said she knows someone who has been to a dog friendly screening, and it is not what you described.

Ursulla · 13/01/2025 22:31

Most people's experience of dogs is seeing them run around barking, pissing and shitting everywhere. Maybe they'd have different expectations if dog owners were a bit better at controlling their pets.

Perhaps this is because they don’t actually notice the well behaved, trained dogs that are out and about.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 14/01/2025 03:21

Well, quite apart from the fact that it would be horrible for his poor ears, my dog would hate this!

He would not be interested in the film unless it was 90 mins of himself running on the beach (we record him and play it for him on TV 😂).
He requires at least half a sofa for his body and my lap for his head so would not get comfy on a cinema seat. He’d probably sit on my lap despite being 30kg.
He’d silently judge any barking dogs.
Actually, he wouldn’t settle as he’d want peoples snacks constantly (he’s a Lab, enough said!).
He’d leave behind a nice covering of fur for for next person.
He’s keep dropping his ball and it would bounce all the way to the bottom of the cinema or get stuck under someone’s seat.
Nah, it’s not for him, he’ll stick to the beach!

OonaStubbs · 14/01/2025 03:40

This is crazy, cinemas have lost their mind. The reason people aren't going anymore is because of all the disruptive behaviour in the cinemas, people on their phones, shouting and fighting etc. Having dogs in there will just make things ten times worse.

For once I agree, any other dog posts you go on I won't 😆

LaurieFairyCake · 14/01/2025 05:07

I think they're a great idea yet I never take my dog to one as they bark at the tv when there's dogs, horses and bloody squirrels on it Grin

I'd maybe the quietest one to a screening where there were no dogs in the film, like it's a wonderful life though as she loves going anywhere with us. The pub is her favourite place.

In the end though it's all about REVENUE, cinemas are struggling - I don't care what they do to keep open, I bloody love the cinema !

RampantIvy · 14/01/2025 06:05

I would be interested to know what percentage of people who like going to the cinema don't go because they won't can't leave their dog.

vodkaredbullgirl · 14/01/2025 07:01

My dogs would both be happy at home.

I asked our cinema manager that, as I've never seen any dogs in there. He said that a few older people at afternoon screenings bring their dogs who are usually small and elderly themselves.

I still think it's wrong as lots of people are allergic. I wouldn't dream of bringing our dog.

DaDaDoDaiDa · 14/01/2025 07:54

When we had a dog, he wouldn't have gained anything from a cinema trip, he'd just have gone to sleep; and it isn't as if the usual duration of a cinema trip is too long to leave your dog at home (unless you are going to a cinema miles away).

I suppose the cinemas must think there's money in it, and if there is, then it's reasonable - I often wonder how cinemas survive, when I go (which is usually at the weekend when you'd expect it to be busy) there are rarely more than a handful of people in the auditorium.

Iheartmysmart · 14/01/2025 08:02

I think my old dog used to enjoy the peace and quiet when I went out to the cinema. He’d have the radio on and a treat just before I left then he’d hop on the sofa and sleep. He was usually in exactly the same spot when I got home.

The last film I went to see just before Christmas was disrupted by numerous people coming in late and trying to find their seats. The family behind me getting up six times to go out to the lobby and the person who was obviously sat in front of the projector repeatedly standing up so we could see his head in the film. A well behaved dog would have been a huge improvement on that.,

SnidelyWhiplash · 14/01/2025 08:04

My young dog would be a nightmare. He’d be giddy because of the other dogs and a complete pain in the arse. He’d far rather stay home.

Where are we finding all these doubly incontinent dogs?
