Cinema Screening for Dogs

My local cinema is having cinema screenings where you can take your dog along. So far they have had Wallace and Gromit and The Lion King.

AIBU or has the world gone mad?

I don’t see why it’s that weird. My cat watches David Attenborough documentaries on Netflix.

My cat used to love the snooker.

Enough people here scream if:

  • The word dog is mentioned
  • They see one from 1000000 paces
  • Their precious dd/ds is licked by on
  • It is isn't muzzled and manacled So if a dog owner want to see a film without causing a mass panic in the streets, a dog-friendly viewing is perfect
Brooomhilda · 13/01/2025 06:08

I personally also love this idea. My dog had separation anxiety and so we wouldn't do something like go to the cinema, we'd stay home and watch a film instead of causing him distress. It's more for the humans than it is the dogs, allows us to go to the cinema too!

MirandaWest · 13/01/2025 06:24

I’m sure there’s local cinemas that have been doing this for a while. I don’t have a dog so haven’t paid much attention.

Longtermuser · 13/01/2025 06:30

Never heard anything so ridiculous. Dogs have super sensitive hearing for start and I've never met a dog who would sit watching a movie. Sleep through it maybe. And yes too bad their actual human paying customers with allergies will no longer be able to use the cinema. Animal dander hangs around for months.
People really don't don't understand their pets needs if they think a visit to the cinema is approximate.

Longtermuser · 13/01/2025 06:30

*appropriate!

Mumofyellows · 13/01/2025 06:33

I have two dogs and absolutely love taking them to places with me, I don't think I'd take them to the cinema though, I reckon they would be bored and restless and it wouldn't be hugely enjoyable for them...

Mirrorxxx · 13/01/2025 06:34

I dont see the problem. Some dogs enjoy it. Mine doesn’t but why shouldn’t dogs go if they like it. It’s much more enjoyable than a cinema full of children

HollyKnight · 13/01/2025 06:35

Aww I know some people this would do a lot of good for. I used to work with autistic adults who were very isolated because of their social anxiety. Their pets were the only things really that got them out of the house on their own. I can see them actually feeling brave enough to go to the cinema if they were welcome to bring their dogs.

ClassicBBQ · 13/01/2025 06:43

My border collie would be LIVID if I took him to the cinema! He hates being still, so I imagine he'd just annoy all the other dogs that apparently like watching TV.

Tisthedamnseason · 13/01/2025 07:08

Do they have information about how to convert the film's age rating into dog years so you know if it's suitable?

Caspianberg · 13/01/2025 07:20

Annoying.
Mu son has dog allergies. Day to day it doesn’t affect him as I don’t take him places with dogs and normal places are fine. If they started letting dogs in a cinema it 100% won’t be.

We went to a local ish cafe recently for a friends birthday evening event there. It’s not on our normal route so had never been inside. I didn’t realise owner has dog and it lives in the cafe all day. So I hadn’t pre dosed Ds up with allergy medication as didn’t think needed. After 20 mins we had to leave as his face had gone bright red, eyes swollen to almost closed and he couldn’t stop sneezing and was starting to wheeze. Even though we started giving his allergy medication after 10 mins of realising dog was there. It took about 30 mins of outside fresh air, allergy medicine to kick in and him crying for it to subside. Evening ruined because of a dog.

It’s really hard to fully clean after a pet. You can, but a cinema isn’t going to be steam cleaning even seat and hooking and carpet washing after every film are they.

The Puppy Pound (£) is currently a very strong currency.

Also DS wouldn't be able to go in that cinema without having an allergy attack even a week after the showing! I am sure he's not alone

He's not alone. I wouldn't be able to sit through a film if there had been dogs about, nor would by kids.

RampantIvy · 13/01/2025 07:26

I think it is bonkers.

How come there are so many dogs that can't be left for the duration of a film?

Even most dog lovers wouldn't want this.

As for @WiddlinDiddlin's comments, words fail me.

You can't compare a cinema with carpets full of dogs to a cafe or shop that might have one or two dogs and that has easy to clean hard floors.

People don't choose to be allergic to dogs, yet the number of dog free public spaces is reducing yet again.

Disclaimer: I like dogs and am not allergic to them.

mitogoshigg · 13/01/2025 07:28

No, just no - dogs like parks not cinemas!

Constantlychangingnames · 13/01/2025 07:28

Ew, Gross. 🤢

NooNakedJacuzziness · 13/01/2025 07:29

I bet Marley & Me, Old Yeller and Cujo have an 18+ rating

GreenTeaLikesMe · 13/01/2025 07:33

I think a lot of it is about dog owners who want to take the dog about with them all day so that they can continue doing all the activities they want and need to do (shops, cinema, errands) while the dog gets sufficient walking in throughout the day and therefore doesn't need a designated "Dog Walk" as such, while the owner has no limits on how long they can spend outside the home or what time they need to be back.

Because they don't want a lifestyle where they have to put aside a specific chunk of time for an assigned "Dog Walk" (with no other activities or shopping able to happen at the same time, can't use the Dog Walk to pop into a shop or dry cleaners or what-not) and then have to go home, park the dog at home, and head out to another activity while having to be constantly mindful of the time because you aren't supposed to leave dogs for more than four hours.

Which I "get," because that does sound really restricting and inconvenient, but they should have realized this before getting a dog? The pandemic really caused dog ownership to be turbocharged among a lot of people whose lifestyles and tastes aren't really suited to dog ownership.

The Puppy Pound (£) is currently a very strong currency.

It seems so.

As I said upthread, I am not in the UK. And I am reading the replies to this thread, quite aghast.

Like it is completely normal. 😂

Which makes me think that people have been conditioned to believe that their pets should be going anywhere and everywhere with them. Why has this happened? Why are they now in restaurants and shops?

I can quite honestly say, if I went to a restaurant, and a dog was at the table next to me, I would leave. (service dog exception).

And since when did dogs need to be attended to 24/7? Are we not making them have separation anxiety, but never allowing them to be alone?

HelloIsItMeYoureCookingFor · 13/01/2025 07:34

Well the idea certainly isn't for the benefit of the dogs. Why would a dog want to be stuck in a strange room watching a film they can't understand?

WhySoManySocks · 13/01/2025 07:36

Just like screenings “for” babies, this is actually a screening for human adults who wish to bring a dog, adjusted so that it’s dog friendly (possibly not too dark, possibly not too loud etc) and with everyone’s expectations adjusted. No, it’s not presuming that Lulu and Rex will later discuss the parallels with Hamlet while sniffing each other’s bums.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 13/01/2025 07:47

On the plus side at least the dogs won't be mucking about with their phones - oh no, they can!!!

Same.

UtterlyOtterly · 13/01/2025 07:49

This is the reason I will never go to my local cinema. A friend went two or three days after a dog event and said it still smelt of dog.
