To ask my partner to walk me to the bus stop?

eightsaie · 11/01/2025 09:55

I'm heading into town
The bus stop is a minute walk around the corner but it's really icy outside and my shoes have no grip at all.
I fell over yesterday and got a bit of a shock.
I'm going to grab some better footwear in town.
I said to my partner do you mind walking me to the bus stop so I can hold on to you just incase I fall.
He kicked off saying who walks him back home?
So I get to the bus stop with no thought for him etc etc
Anyway I said it's okay il just walk around myself-if I fall I fall
Aibu to ask him?
He says it's his only day off

Irish news helpfully told people to walk like penguins this week. Not even joking

I love this stuff about Ireland (I'm Irish)

Are you old or vulnerable?

She's vulnerable because she hasn't got proper shoes. Probably a bit scared after falling yesterday too.

UnstableEquilibrium · 11/01/2025 10:54

To all those who've suggested the sock trick, yes it works but surely it's silly and wasteful to ruin a perfectly good pair of socks to save her DH a two minute walk. There's a very high chance that they'd have holes in by the time you got to the bus stop.

Winterskyfall · 11/01/2025 10:54

I think your partner has told you how much he cares about your well being, take heed. I don't get these anti feminist comments. If my friend / parent / partner / neighbour was in the same position and I couldn't lend them shoes to keep them from falling I would walk with them. It's just common decency to spend 2 minutes of your life trying to stop someone getting injured.

When I was commuting to work my beautiful husband would go to my car early to defrost my windscreen and warm up the car because I get cold quickly and he doesn't. I never once asked him to do it. There are decent men out there, if I was you I'd trade this one in and hold out for a better one.

InfoSecInTheCity · 11/01/2025 10:51

@devilspawn the cheap fluffy/cosy socks are great for this. They're really stretchy so do go over shoes and the fibres stick to the ice on the floor so you don't slip

Really, I'd have thought they'd slip more?

I guess I could borrow DH's socks

DH is driving me to the bus stop later, because the route to the main road is like glass just now, but completely fine after that. I’m going into town for a birthday lunch and I want to wear nice shoes not practical ones.

I don’t think asking him has set back feminism and I don’t think YABU OP. However, given you’re a bit stuck until you buy some new shoes, try the socks trick, and remember this day the next time he asks you for a favour…

Now this situation is completely different. No harm in him driving you of course, but you DO have proper shoes so just wear those and change into your 'nice' shoes when inside. What will you do when going home?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 11/01/2025 11:00

I've developed a particular technique for these sort of conditions. It is based on those who know a thing or two about getting around in icy conditions. You could try it - at least until you get some new shoes.

Does it involve only using your left socks to cover your shoes?

Ginmonkeyagain · 11/01/2025 11:04

@DanceTheDevilBackIntoHisHole yep penguin walking is the best approach to the ice! That was me yesterday walking to the station! (Despite gritted pavements the perpetual water leak gifted to us by Thames Water has created a sort of luge on our road at the moment)

peachesarenom · 11/01/2025 11:04

People have been very mean on this thread. It's a tiny request and his reaction was disgusting.

I hope you find some nice shoes OP x

BunnyLake · 11/01/2025 11:05

eightsaie · 11/01/2025 10:24

I've got loads of shoes but non with a decent grip
I've got trainers but I'm sliding all over with them on

Then i honestly think it’s best you leave it for another day. Shops are open tomorrow. What happens when you get off the bus at the other end?

Differentstarts · 11/01/2025 11:06

Get a taxi, don't go today, order shoes online. There are many options

FlowerBee62 · 11/01/2025 11:06

Buy the cheap primark ugg type slipper boots,I use them to walk my dogs when slippy and they work a treat. Then I would suggest getting rid of the boyfriend as he sounds like a right brat.

Eyresandgraces · 11/01/2025 11:06

It’s not your request that’s the problem, although pp’s are focusing on this.
For me your bf’s attitude is uncaring and ‘well what about me?’
Realistically he’s going to sit around all day and walking you to the bus stop would have taken 5 minutes tops including putting on and removing outdoor wear.
My dh would offer to walk me, I wouldn’t have to ask.
Having equality doesn’t mean your dp should never put you first, not if he/she cares about you.
I guarantee many feminists on here will cook a specific meal that they’re not keen on because their dp likes it.

Tandora · 11/01/2025 11:10

Unless you are very old, very pregnant or disabled this is the most absurd thing I’ve ever read.
No you do not need a man to escort you to the bus stop so you can lean on him.
This is not a Jane Austen novel.

Gamerlady · 11/01/2025 11:11

I'm with your husband, no need to hold your hand. Stay in if it's that slippy.

BreakfastClubBlues · 11/01/2025 11:14

Unless you are very old, very pregnant or disabled this is the most absurd thing I’ve ever read.

This is your criteria for someone to expect any care from their partner?

Sad.

diddl · 11/01/2025 11:15

I "walked like a penguin" the other day to cross a road.

And I have good shoes!

I get really nervous when it's slippy out & can feel myself tensing my legs!

Here you do have to clear & grit (if necessary) outside your house so that it's safe.

Never heard of the sock trick.

Is any particular kind best?

I think he sounds mean OP.

EvelynBeatrice · 11/01/2025 11:15

Buy the elastic chain things that fit over the soles of your shoes/ boots. Mister mint and similar shoe re heeling/ key cutting places often stock them.

These are options now, certainly, since her DP said no.
And maybe the next time he asks her to help him out in some way, she can point him to mumsnet where there will be a load of solutions so she doesn't have to be bothered.

Bubblemonkey · 11/01/2025 11:16

I almost went pissing walking from the bus stop after I’d been to the hairdressers on Thursday. By the time my husband would’ve got to me, I’d have been home. My choice to go out, my problem 🤷🏼‍♀️

Doggymummar · 11/01/2025 11:16

I know not everyone thinks like me, but this happened to me yesterday ( the slipping over bit) we rarely get any snow or ice where I'm live so no suitable shoes. Went on Amazon and ordered some, woke up this morning and they were on the doorstep before 10am. Perhaps that could be an alternative to slipping around trying to get to town, if the busses are even running, being so icy.

borntobequiet · 11/01/2025 11:17

It’s going to warm up over the next few days, so stay indoors today, wait until the weather is better, get decent shoes and then you’ll be OK for any further icy days.

Dobbythechristmaself · 11/01/2025 11:17

I think you were wrong to ask but his reaction was pretty careless.

if I was him though I’d find the request pretty unattractive.

Ablondiebutagoody · 11/01/2025 11:19

This is the most feeble thing I have ever heard
