To ask my partner to walk me to the bus stop?

eightsaie · 11/01/2025 09:55

I'm heading into town
The bus stop is a minute walk around the corner but it's really icy outside and my shoes have no grip at all.
I fell over yesterday and got a bit of a shock.
I'm going to grab some better footwear in town.
I said to my partner do you mind walking me to the bus stop so I can hold on to you just incase I fall.
He kicked off saying who walks him back home?
So I get to the bus stop with no thought for him etc etc
Anyway I said it's okay il just walk around myself-if I fall I fall
Aibu to ask him?
He says it's his only day off

Well I think you’re being a bit pathetic but he doesn’t sound much of a catch either.

HRTQueen · 11/01/2025 10:08

I think that’s mean

if I had friend round and they asked me for the same reasons you did I wouldn’t hesitate to put my sturdy boots on and walk with them

My partner would if I asked him too. But I do think it's a bit pathetic unless you are an elderly person.

Does he have good shoes for the weather? Otherwise what's the point as he won't be stable either.
Have you a stick or broom you can use ?

I think she OP only flies at night time with full moon

Dear god
Did I dream Women's Liberation, Germain Greer, equal pay, equal opportunities, maternity leave & pay...
Do you need help breathing in and out?

Are you for real?! Surely this is a joke? You’ve just set feminism back about 3000 years.

She’s not set feminism back 3,000 years. It’s icy, she fell over yesterday because she doesn’t have suitable shoes, which she’s recognised and going into town to buy shoes with more grip on them. She’s just asked her DH to take 2 minutes out of his day to walk with her to the bus stop as she’s lost her confidence walking on icy pavements. It’s a one off request until she has better shoes. She’s not asked him to climb Everest with her.

Simonjt · 11/01/2025 10:09

If it slippery enough you can’t put one foot in front of the other then its slippery enough to need crampons, so unless he has these you’ll just end up with two people falling over.

or a broomstick?

MyDeepZebra · 11/01/2025 10:11

I can see his point. I wouldn't be going out unless absolutely necessary and I wouldn't be best pleased at someone else thinking it's ok to put me at risk. Personally I would have ordered some crampons off Amazon Prime yesterday for over shoes, or got an Uber/Taxi into town if it was completely necessary to go out at all. Don't put yourself, or anyone else at risk.

Aliflowers · 11/01/2025 10:11

I think its 50/50 here. Im not sure why you'd need someone to accompany you for a 1 min walk. Its a few feet, take a bit of care and puts socks over your shoes if youre worried about slipping so its not something Id ask or expect. In saying that if I asked my DH (if he hadn't already offered) he'd do it no problem

TenThousandSpoons · 11/01/2025 10:00

YANBU. A loving partner would do this without a second thought.

A loving partner wouldn't ask for such a ridiculous thing from a partner

rainbowunicorn · 11/01/2025 10:13

As others have said wear some socks over your shoes to give you grip on the ice. Why should he risk himself falling?

Presumably she is an adult, who might perhaps have considered owning more than one pair of shoes.

Shoxfordian · 11/01/2025 10:13

Yabu, you're an adult not a toddler who needs to hold someone's hand to walk along

Pinkissmart · 11/01/2025 10:13
  1. Dress for the weather. This means appropriate footwear

  2. Your partner is being a dick

Bumcake · 11/01/2025 10:14

Mean of him, weird of you.

SunnieShine · 11/01/2025 10:16

It doesn't feel like a big ask to me. Your partner should have helped you.

I bet you do plenty for him.

eightsaie · 11/01/2025 10:16

Oh come on
I only asked him to walk me to the bus stop
My normal winter wellies I lost when we moved that's why I've only got these other shoes.
Todays my only day off when I can go into town to grab some new ones
This is nothing about women need men blah blah
If it was a woman I would ask the same
If it was my sister I would ask her

This is so funny @eightsaie . Who will help your bf if he falls on the way back ? X

GreyCarpet · 11/01/2025 10:17

Some people really do live in a different world.

I'm pretty sure my partner would do this if I asked because nothing is too much trouble for him.

I also can't imagine ever asking this of him! It wouldn't even occur to me as an option.

biscuitsandbooks · 11/01/2025 10:17

I kind of see both sides.

You're an adult - you should be capable of just putting some socks over your shoes (or waiting until the weather is better).

But equally it's not a big request. My DH wouldn't even have to wait to be asked.

HappyPanda613 · 11/01/2025 10:17

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/01/2025 10:02

Are you for real?! Surely this is a joke? You’ve just set feminism back about 3000 years.

So I imagine the next time you are in a raging inferno and a fireman comes to your rescue you will respond “no thank you mate, I will get out of this myself, wouldn’t want to disappoint the suffragettes by possibly accepting helping from a man”

Tisthedamnseason · 11/01/2025 10:18

I think you're a bit silly to ask. And I'd be a bit annoyed if I had to go out in the cold because my other half decided they wanted to, despite not having suitable footwear to do so.

But also he doesn't sound that nice.
