I saw something on tiktok today that said 'Carrie was to Big what Janice was to Chandler' 👀👀😬

I rewatch it all the time tbh, it's my fave show but now that Gen Z have found it, there are a lot of hot takes available online

What do people think of Carrie, now that 20 years have passed? Who's your fave? x

The bigger sea change in Miranda in AJLT is the loss of her career. The thing I admired about her the most in SATC was how bright and career orientated she was.

I know she gets it back a bit with the internship in the second series but she would
have danced rings around everyone on her masters course. It's as though they forgot she was a Harvard graduate with 30 years experience in corporate law when they have her agonising over finding the right words etc.

Miranda is queer rather than lesbian, I think?

Also Che isn’t “obviously” a woman, what an odd thing to say.

What do you mean by 'queer'?

Che is 100% a woman and is played by Sara Ramirez who is also 100% a woman. I think she does a fine job of playing a truly dreadful character actually, so good for her

sweetpickle2 · 12/01/2025 09:14

Even if you believe Sara Ramirez to be a woman (I disagree but that’s your opinion) you can’t say Che is a woman?? Che is a character in a TV show that is written as non-binary. Che is 100% non-binary.

Queer is used to cover anything that isn’t heterosexual. As I’m sure you could have googled yourself.

Lottapianos · 12/01/2025 09:18

'Queer is used to cover anything that isn’t heterosexual.'

Right. Makes loads of sense

Everyone is either male or female, and Che is clearly female. 'Non binary' is nonsense, and shoehorning this rubbish into the reboot has turned a lot of people off

Grow up. I don’t believe in dragons, but if there is one in a TV show it doesn’t cease to exist.

This silliness is thankfully, speedily returning to where it belongs, if anywhere, that is, ie mostly internet based niche ideas around gender and sexualities for those who are very young and/or occupy the far left. It’s slightly jarring to see posters still declaiming it as real though. I really did think most people had seen through it.

No I am simply trying to explain to you in straightforward terms as it seems that you don’t understand that a fictional character exists in that fictional universe whether you agree with what they are or not.

This isnt about whether you believe in queer people or non binary people in general- just that Che, the character, is non binary- so you can’t say they are “100% a woman” because they just are not.

I’m queer, am I not real?

Adamante · 12/01/2025 09:28

Of course you are. That is just a label you have chosen to give yourself attached to a niche belief system that most people do not adhere to and no one has to go along with it.

In your circles, maybe. Luckily my experience of the world is that people are more understanding and open minded.

StartupRepair · 12/01/2025 09:29

Agree with disappointment about Miranda's career
She was always sharp and incisive in the original series. Now she is dithery and unconfident and doesn't sort of know how the world works.

They are part of a group who have chosen that belief system and that’s fine. But you can’t force anyone else to go along with it though some might kindly humour/pander to you.

I don’t think I am trying to force anyone? I’m just telling you what I am. If you don’t believe in it that’s your business, but it doesn’t change it.

Hoplolly · 12/01/2025 09:35

I think SATC was groundbreaking at the time and changed how we talk about sex. I was 19 when it first came out and we didn't really discuss sex with friends - but I know within my group of friends watching the show really opened up our discussions. It made them feel less taboo, it was okay to talk about our experiences.

That said, the show generally hasn't aged very well but then none do, do they, when the world moves on so much.

Carrie was always a selfish piece of shit but I didn't hate her for it. Just made her real.

duchessofsilk · 12/01/2025 09:37

In my 20s I loved it but now re-watching it I realise how cringe it is - lazy stereotyping of women, Carrie was a selfish horrible "friend" and it became hard to suspend my disbelief that she could be so extravagant on her salary.

You’re right, but you’re speaking about these ideological beliefs as if they’re factual and implying people are closed minded and unaccepting if they don’t believe they are, so there’s an element of emotional coercion there.

Adamante · 12/01/2025 09:45

Anyway this thread is to talk about SATC & AJLT, so let’s not get bogged down in these kinds of ideological discussions. They’ve dominated for far too long as it is.

JMSA · 12/01/2025 09:49

I always have found Charlotte to be really twee and annoying. A 'my shit don't stink' kinda lady.

Most TV shows don't tend to reflect economic realities though.

See also the apartments the Friends were apparently able to afford. And pretty much any show about ordinary people living in London.

Good point

MrsToothyBitch · 12/01/2025 10:08

I was a teen at the time and loved it. I actually still love it in lots of ways. It was groundbreaking. As I've aged, I've recognised situations I've been in and experiences that friends and I have had with men and relationships and life. We've even had some of the conversations. Bits of it have not aged well - eg attitudes to sexuality and fetish / kink, but it's still very funny and the basic women finding their way premise shows that everything stays the same whilst everything changes.

Some of the things that seem old or outdated were also huge leaps forward at the time so they were steps in the right direction. The show certainly pushed boundaries. I've not watched the revival. I don't want to. I think they should've used an I wonder what happened to those characters and their "types" to start a new story about different women of the same age.

And yes, Carrie is horrendous fairly often, but sometimes she isn't. But she's the main character and we see her unfiltered. It's how we see ourselves and our own lives. She just happens to also be incredibly selfish. If she were written as super sweet, it would actually jar with how much of her is laid bare in some ways and I'm pretty sure she'd still get dragged for being relentlessly twee. She also (well actually all of them) can make for uncomfortable viewing because she does dumb things for boys. Once you can recognise the patterns, thought processes and emotions - usually from some sort of experience- you can't not wince whilst watching because it's like watching a (usually) better dressed version of yourself do or say something cringeworthy. It elicits a mental flashback.

Also few of us are that selfish and it's jaw dropping to see it. That never changes.

I love the show.

I will always love the show.

Carrie was a terrible friend and girlfriend and some of the episodes have aged really really REALLY badly (and some episodes were cringe even at the time.)

But I still love the show and rewatch it regularly.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 12/01/2025 13:38

The thread took a weird turn

I probably shouldn't have said that ajlt was ruined by woke, I just meant that the show spent so long agonising over the right thing to say, and putting forward various experiences, it ruined the sex and the drama!

Che is non binary, and i accept that miranda would be considered queer, although moving forward will probably only date women

They could've done with a sexy Samantha type lesbian, who spends her time shagging her way through new york, that would've been the best way to handle things tbh!!!

Anyway glad che is gone, as i think we can all agree that no-one liked them 🤭

The show needs more hot divorcees tbh, like that tech guy that cycled into Carrie
