I saw something on tiktok today that said 'Carrie was to Big what Janice was to Chandler' 👀👀😬

I rewatch it all the time tbh, it's my fave show but now that Gen Z have found it, there are a lot of hot takes available online

What do people think of Carrie, now that 20 years have passed? Who's your fave? x

In the scene where Carrie tells Sam about her affair with Big and asks ‘aren’t you going to judge me, just a little bit?’ Sam replies ‘Not my style’ and winks. And with that wink, she steals the entire scene (which should have been all about Carrie). Kim is a brilliant actor.

Also (reminded by a PP and a naked Miranda / Aiden towel situ): ‘bullshit bagels’. Sums Carrie up.

Just the sight of Berger or the poor bloke that played him sends my blood pressure through the roof.
I loathe that guy though the episode after he dumps carrie by post it she has the most beautiful hair - I rewatch that one for hair envy

Same here! He was so absolutely truly awful - non stop tedious jokes, awkward, mean, emotional fuckwittage. No redeeming features at all

Sex And The City What GIF

This man has singlehandedly taught me the importance of never dating someone who makes such self deprecating comments

I can think of one redeeming feature - if my memory serves me correctly, he was the one who introduced the phrase 'he's just not that into you' to the world. 😄

Other than that, though, not the most likeable character. I seem to remember him disparaging Carrie for drinking a strawberry milkshake because strawberry was 'for little girls'. She got her own back with the whole scrunchie thing, though. 😄

ruethewhirl · 14/01/2025 12:45

I just remembered something: SJP's scream is one of the most grating sounds known to man. I looked on Youtube for a clip but couldn't find one, so you'll have to take my word for it. It should be classified as an offensive weapon. SO SHRILL. 😖

Ok fair enough. That's a good one 👍

Adamante · 14/01/2025 13:31

I quite liked Berger & you’d think most people who hate Carrie would too, given that he clearly saw in her what they do 😁

One of the funniest episodes is when she saw his friends in the club and told them he was “Bad In Bed” and then they all had to leave immediately. I thought that was very true to life 😁

That scene when he was just grimly thrusting away on top of her was toe curling!

That phrase is actually the only think I liked about him!

I did not like Burger because I cannot stand men who make their female partners feel bad for outearning them. I have met more than a few!

I don't think it was as simple as out earning. She was more successful than him, career wise, her books etc being published but his had been dropped. I think he was shocked by her extravagance and he knew he couldn't hang around watching her do better than him. At least he had some insight. Far better than hanging around making her miserable for months/years like so many of these men do 🙄

Yeah I agree - as awful and insecure as he was, at least he left and didn't drag things out

Carrie could've learned this lesson from him 🤭

@appalonia That scene is so funny, he didnt have the look or charisma of someone good in bed tbh

Instagram. Oddly enough this spoof seems to work better than AJLT - I think maybe it's the format of 4 strongly defined characters talking.

I loved the original series then and still love it now. The writing is whip smart. I was either single or with an ill-suited boyfriend when they first aired, and found SATC a great comfort. I felt it validated my own situation (in the same way that the first two Bridget Jones novels made the very single Bridget so loveable and real). I think before SATC and Bridget, the dominant culture told women that they should be happily coupled up…both were so fresh and groundbreaking. I am grateful to SATC for cheering me up. Now I’m in my fifties and see the problems with Carrie/Big, her personality flaws etc…I was always a bit worried that I was like Charlotte. The Bunny McDougal episodes still make me laugh. AJLT - eugh - no thanks - how could they do that to Miranda’s character. Hmm…maybe I’ll watch the boxed set again…as comforting as a jacket potato with grated cheese. Loving this thread and thank you to the PP for the You Tube recommendation. The Sentimental Garbage podcast does an excellent deep dive into the original series too.

I loved that scene! I also enjoyed when they were arguing in the street and he snapped ‘nice hat by the way’.

No he was definitely bitter about her outearning him and being more successful. He made that very clear as did the show.

StartupRepair · 14/01/2025 23:31

Carrie and Charlotte were always status seeking in their relationships. Samantha usually didn't care and Miranda was very conscious that she was dating down a level with Steve. That scene where she tried to buy him a suit to go to her work event was excruciating and very well observed.

Sexist and the City. 😂

toastandtwo · 15/01/2025 00:29

I also first watched it as a teen and LOVED it. I don’t even know why in hindsight as I never liked Carrie or Miranda, didn’t find any of the men particularly attractive and wasn’t into fashion 😂But I did. The snippets that stand out in my mind from 20 odd years later are the bits that show real friendship and maybe that’s what I was drawn to at the time as I didn’t have a very happy home and spent as much time with friends as humanly possible.

Not sure what I’d think if I saw it now! I do just want to add though that I briefly lived in Manhattan in my 20s and men definitely asked you out constantly contrary to what someone said upthread. And I’m not particularly beautiful or anything. So I did find that aspect of the show borne out in reality!

I'm planning to live my life like carrie later this year so I'm hoping that's the case!

It's definitely a comfort show, it does a good job of making you feel part of their world

It was okay originally, could take it or leave it. Looking back on it now, with today's hindsight and it was pretty darned awful. The characters were vacuous and parodies of women.

A friend of a friend on a night out told me that she thought that all women were represented by one of the four characters on the show. I expressed the same opinion as you and she went completely spare, the whole night after that was awkward for everyone. Very strange behaviour, the moment I realised I was over the kind of socialising that involved placating morons, especially unhinged ones.

I agree. I never lived there but saw someone there for a while and I got asked out on the street, by barristas, in cafes. I also had female friends there of the same age and the rules of engagement on dating (presuming not exclusive until specifically agreed, very pragmatic deliberations about money, class, shared views etc) as shown in SATC were pretty accurate and generally understood.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 15/01/2025 09:02

I bought something in Macy's once and the guy on the till asked me out as he was wrapping up my purchase. Cannot ever imagine that happening here!
