I saw something on tiktok today that said 'Carrie was to Big what Janice was to Chandler' 👀👀😬

I rewatch it all the time tbh, it's my fave show but now that Gen Z have found it, there are a lot of hot takes available online

What do people think of Carrie, now that 20 years have passed? Who's your fave? x

I love the show.

I will always love the show.

Carrie was a terrible friend and girlfriend and some of the episodes have aged really really REALLY badly (and some episodes were cringe even at the time.)

But I still love the show and rewatch it regularly.

I'm on my billionth rewatch 😄 - it feel like my best self when I watch it whilst flicking through vogue magazine and smelling the perfume samples 🥰

Most TV shows don't tend to reflect economic realities though.

See also the apartments the Friends were apparently able to afford. And pretty much any show about ordinary people living in London.

do you remember this TV show Set in London and New York

SATC as well as Ally McBeal were to me, two shows ruined by their whiny, navel gazing lead character.

Carrie is a narcissistic pain in the arse and Big was always honest about who he was.

The clothes could be fabulous.

The first film was ok. The second was beyond horrific.

SJP was clearly jealous and insecure about the superior actor that is Kim C and began to use her role as Exec to undermine the character / actress towards the end of the series and it’s REALLY highlighted in how Sam became a caricature in the 2nd movie.

AJLT is shite without Sam.

Aiden is a controlling creep.

ETA: still watch it though!

Edited

All of this.
Also, Carrie's simpering flirtatiousness (SJP's acting in fact) when she fancies someone is atrocious.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 13/01/2025 15:07

The best bloke that Carrie met on SATC by far was a very young Timothy Olyphant 😍

Littlecaf · 13/01/2025 17:35

@CarterBeatsTheDevil i had to look up who he played …. Sam, Sam Jones! Yes?!

I think he played a young guy that carrie dated who lived in a disgusting apartment with urban outfitter candles, in season 1

I loved it at the time, and still re-watch it from time to time. Although it is more of a hate watch now. Carrie is a dreadful human being. And I was really cross when she told Aiden to go and help Miranda when she hurt herself and was naked on the bathroom floor instead of going herself.

And then when she insisted on approaching Natasha when she was having lunch so she could unburden herself about cheating with her husband.

I didn't mind the others too much, but can't stand any of them in And Just Like That. And the films were abysmal, especially the second one. It was the worst film I've ever seen, and I've watched The Human Centipede.

It does seem that SATC hasn't aged that well, but it is what it is, and I can relate to it more than I can with AJLT, which seems determined to go over the top with "wokeness". I don't know anyone who acts like they do, constantly trying to make sure they say and do the "politically correct" thing all the time and making a song and dance out of it.

I'm not surprised Samantha moved away, she probably found them all to be hard work!

Her approaching natasha will always be insane. And natasha handled her with such class - 'now, not only have you ruined my marriage, you've also ruined my lunch' 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

Yeah ajlt is a mess. And the thing is, Darren star has made emily in paris, which manages not to be any of the things that ajlt in terms of fixing/explaining societys issues - but is but is still beloved

I loved the first few series. They were really special, relatable, funny and uplifting. Obviously they are dated now, as viewed through “woke” eyes.
I went off it when it became all about glamour and designer labels. I much preferred it when they wore more vintage clothes like in the first few series. It’s still my comfort show for when I feel really down. It always cheers me up.

OrchardBlack · 13/01/2025 18:08

Carrie was more devastated when Big didn't turn up to their wedding than she was when he DIED IN HER ARMS.

stayathomer · 13/01/2025 18:08

I loved when she worked out how much she spent on shoes😂

Yes and in season 1 of Emily in Paris, there was a very clever hidden message in Emily's advertising campaign slogan
" Men don't have vaginas". The opposite of woke!😂

chattyness · 13/01/2025 18:24

I loved it, still love re-watching it, Carrie is such a selfish whiny PIA though isn't she! I loved the first film, hated the second and have never watched the reboot, I won't ever watch it.

I would love to give the Carrie diaries a look though ,I keep forgetting about that one

Appalonia · 13/01/2025 18:38

Carrie had such beautiful, tailored coats in Paris, the sort of coats you just don't see any more. She'd never have been caught dead in a shapeless puffa jacket!

I love the dress with the big polka dots that she wore in Paris

Decided to to be The Carrie Diaries a go inspired by this thread.

I think it was a pile of shite then and is still a pile of shite now.

I could not have put it better myself.

Having said that, in the few I did see Kim Cattrall acted the other three off the screen in every episode.

It's on ITV X at the moment. I've watched the first episode tonight and I couldn't get into it at all.

JHound · 14/01/2025 00:24

I actually really like AJLT.

user23124 · 10/01/2025 21:09

I found it entertaining at the time but now it does seem pretty awful! The films really harmed any revival it could have had - dreadful!

The second film was terrible because of what they did to Samantha. I loved the first.

I still like the old show but there were episodes I found cringeworthy when I originally watched them and still do (like when Samantha dated that black guy) and then other episodes I found fine which really aged badly: the episode with the trans women, where Charlotte dates an uncircumcised man and when Carrie dates a bisexual man. For such a progressive show those episodes were really quite regressive!

I'm just watching it for the Elvis guy! He's dreamy...😂😍

MrsCatE · 14/01/2025 06:31

It was absolute shite and dreadful. Carrie was so up her on a£de - a writer / Journalist - how? Only good character ends up shagging a bloke to get back at another bloke and that's empowering - how? Another one is married for a couple of weeks and ends up with Prime Real Estate as Divorce settlement. I saw the Movie - my poor eyes. How on Earth did the Script get through any Writers' edit? The blatant racism, disrespect, and idea that wangling an anorexic ankle would save the day?
