What was your energy bill for Dec 2024? 4 bed semi detached

Hi all

Husband is saying we're having the heating on too much / too high. Bill for December was £275. It's a four bed semi detached house, had all new heating system and boiler about two years ago, and new double glazed windows around the same time.

He likes it put it on about 16-17 degrees. I am comfortable at 18.5 - it never goes above that. Goes down to 9 at night time.

I absolutely HATE feeling cold. Possible thyroid issue that is being looked into, but when I'm cold it is all encompassing and I cannot focus on anything (WFH two days per week).

So I'm curious - if you live in a similar size property, what was your energy bill for Dec 2024 please?

(Just realised we were obviously all home a bit more than usual late Dec as no school or work)

Thanks

Sounds about right, ours was £230 but we hardly have the heating on as it’s a warm house. Same size, also a semi.

litepop · 10/01/2025 10:35

I'm in a 4 bed semi detached. 10 years old have heating at a steady 19.

£129.99 fixed deal with octopus for gas plus electric

310.00 two bed bungalow

TheFairyCaravan · 10/01/2025 10:42

Ours was £157.21 for gas and electric. We live in a 4 bedroom detached and we have an electric car. There’s just the two of us though, but I’m home all day and will put the heating on when I’m cold. We can control our heating so it can be on downstairs and off upstairs and vice versa.

£166 gas. Very drafty 3 bed cottage with single-skin walls and no double glazing. Thermostat on 17C during the day, off at night. We also have the log burner lit typically from 4-10 in the evenings which costs nothing.

UndergroundOvergroundWomblingFreeby · 10/01/2025 11:00

1930 4 bed semi 1500sqft and our total gas and electric bill was £362 for December.
We've got 4 adults and 2 of us work from home.
The house has old double glazing, limited loft insulation and solid walls. Also an integral garage which makes it colder. Boiler is 9 years old and thermostat is at 18 degrees. We don't have heating on overnight. Don't use the tumble dryer much, main a rack and dehumidifier in winter.

Thanks all!!!

OP, I think some people who pay on monthly direct debit may be confusing what they pay each month with the actual cost of the fuel they used in December.
For example my monthly DD is 140 a month combined gas and electricity, but in December I used £290 worth of fuel in a 4 bed detached.

nottoplan · 19/01/2025 02:41

Four bed detached , have heating on when we are in at around 20 , down to around 16 when we are out or overnight , bill for all gas and electric was 220 for December

nottoplan · 19/01/2025 02:43

£220 * was the actual bill not the dd

UmopapIsdn · 19/01/2025 02:43

£120 actual cost, not DD

I'm home 24/7 so the heating is on a lot (at 18-19°).

£158 3 bed semi with utility warehouse.

littlemisspickles · 19/01/2025 03:48

3 bed semi, husband works from home £120 for both. We all have Oodies!

Toastandbutterand · 19/01/2025 05:46

2 bed semi
Heating on constantly at 17.5. it's cheaper to run at night so I don't see the point turning it off.

Gas and electric are on key meters, £85 for both in December.

First week of January was £35 though as it was so cold (-4!)

Oblomov25 · 19/01/2025 07:40

Is he a tight miser normally. Tell him that the recommended temperature is 19, actually it's 18-21. So his choosing 16 is too low.

WhatTheFudges · 19/01/2025 07:48

£290, 4 bed detached. Worth every penny, I will not be cold in my own house! Work full time in the office though so out the house a lot. We have it around 20-21 degrees to click on at 6:30am and 3pm, then it also comes on if it drops below temp for the rest of the evening until 11pm.

user1471528631 · 19/01/2025 07:56

That sounds high to me,3 bed semi here tho.20deg in daytime 16 at night since September and disabled wife at home all the time(who still says its freezing in here lol)£165 a month gas and electric with British Gas

WhatToWrite · 19/01/2025 08:02

We have a big draughty Victorian semi so our usage in December was over £500.

I think the main issue is the temperatures you're mentioning, they are far too cold! I'd be completely miserable in a house where the heating was set to 16c.

Mummadeze · 19/01/2025 08:06

£176 for a 3 bed semi but we only had the heating on all day for the main Xmas days as a treat. The rest of the time we make do between 9am-6pm with Oodies and / or electric blankets. The heating is on from 5am-9am and 6pm-9pm.

LegoBingo · 19/01/2025 08:10

Careful or your house will go mouldy

Season0fthesticks · 19/01/2025 08:16

£110 in gas, that was actual usage
Edited to add 3 bed semi
And putting the heating on whenever I like

PigInAHouse · 19/01/2025 08:18

4 bed detached. Actual cost of fuel used in December was £330. I refuse to be cold in my own home so prioritise heating costs over anything else.

Gallowayan · 19/01/2025 08:20

Similar property. For electricity we pay £60 per month. Our heating is oil and this cost £740 per year, so around £60 per month. Average combined cost about £120 per month. House is well insulated. We keep it around 19 during the day. No heating after bedtime and it is around 16 when I switch it on in the mornings.

Metalhead · 19/01/2025 08:22

On a cold day we use ca. £10 worth of gas & electricity according to our Smart meter, so that would equal around £300 a month. I have to put the heating on if the temperature inside gets below 18 degrees, I like it to be around 19.5/20.
