What was your energy bill for Dec 2024? 4 bed semi detached

Hi all

Husband is saying we're having the heating on too much / too high. Bill for December was £275. It's a four bed semi detached house, had all new heating system and boiler about two years ago, and new double glazed windows around the same time.

He likes it put it on about 16-17 degrees. I am comfortable at 18.5 - it never goes above that. Goes down to 9 at night time.

I absolutely HATE feeling cold. Possible thyroid issue that is being looked into, but when I'm cold it is all encompassing and I cannot focus on anything (WFH two days per week).

So I'm curious - if you live in a similar size property, what was your energy bill for Dec 2024 please?

(Just realised we were obviously all home a bit more than usual late Dec as no school or work)

Thanks

1930 4 bed semi 1500sqft and our total gas and electric bill was £362 for December.
We've got 4 adults and 2 of us work from home.
The house has old double glazing, limited loft insulation and solid walls. Also an integral garage which makes it colder. Boiler is 9 years old and thermostat is at 18 degrees. We don't have heating on overnight. Don't use the tumble dryer much, main a rack and dehumidifier in winter.

almost exact same house as this.
£270 for December, but there's only 2 of us and we try not to have the heating on too much.

Boffle · 19/01/2025 13:27

4 bed detached, difficult to heat, no gas, solar panels (useless in december) heating on all day but not at night.
Electric £85
Logs £70
Oil £200 roughly
Edited to say I it's not as bad as I thought compared to others.

Well if he is pissed off with the Dec bill he is going to be even more pissed off with Jan.

IMO 18C is not unreasonable when you are at home. But maybe think about if you are WFH then heating the room (TRVs, small electric heater) rather than heating the whole house. Also it does not have to be at 18C all night.

A lot of people say they hate being cold. Presumably they hate setting fire to £5 notes less. Because that is pretty much what heating is.

Yes I prefer setting fire to £5 notes than being cold.

Funnily enough I also prefer burning money to being hungry as well.

4 bed detached. Pretty well insulated and brand new boiler.

Total gas/electric usage for December - £260

We are both retired so heating on 24/7. 18 during the day/14:overnight plus we have a living flame gas fire in the sitting room which we use every day during the winter from 1230pm to 1100pm. We also have a plug in hybrid car but just use our normal fixed rate tariff with Octopus.

Looking at the Octopus app for usage so far this month, I assume it will be around £360 for January. We pay £167 per month DD at the moment.

Nourishinghandcream · 19/01/2025 13:57

£125 for December, based on actual readings (our DD is £75/M as we have a comfortable surplus).
4-Bed detached NB. Two of us, both retired so at home all day. Heating, washing, tumbling etc all used as required with no budgeting restrictions.

and if you have an electric heater in just ONE room 😱it has to be small 💷

JustMarriedBecca · 19/01/2025 20:01

5 bed semi. Drafty windows at the back we're replacing so blinds etc. £275 usage for gas and electric. Often at 21 on an evening for an hour. I can't bear being cold.

SnidelyWhiplash · 19/01/2025 20:09

We don’t keep tabs as such, but 4 bed. Ancient listed house with single glazed windows.

Electricity dd is around £100 and we have oil central heating which probably equates to another £100. We rely on our wood burner too, but very rarely buy wood as everything is donated (live rurally and lots of neighbours have lots of trees, as do we).

Sdpbody · 19/01/2025 20:11

Ours was £370 - gas and electricity.

It will be similar for Jan and Feb and will be £50 usage for May-Sept.

My dd is £275pcm.

muddyford · 19/01/2025 20:15

Feeling better about our bill after this thread. 4 bedroom (plus box room) detached and our December bill was c£180 combined gas and electricity.

DGPP · 19/01/2025 20:16

4 bed semi, £250 a month every month direct debit of the year. This means we can spend £500 in colder months. Our heating is on about 10 hours a day at 21C. We can afford it and won’t be cold

JaceLancs · 19/01/2025 20:19

I pay £104.60 pcm for gas and electric so about £1300 a year - I have heating on for about 5 months if the year so my best estimate would be £150 a month when heating on and £100 ish a month when not
3 bed semi in the frozen north

JaceLancs · 19/01/2025 20:21

Forgot to say during week heating is on 7-8.30 am and 6-10pm as we are all out at work rest of day
Thermostat set to 20

Amba1998 · 19/01/2025 20:23

Mid Dec to Mid Jan up north including the snow / ice / -6 we had at the start of Jan we’ve spent £180 combined gas and elec. It was £300 last year for the same period!!

I use a dryer (on most days) dishwasher washing machine etc. heating we have on an hour in the morning, 2 hours evening and sometimes 90 mins in the day if I’m working at home. I don’t have it set to anything, I just boost it for an hour when we feel cold. I did some research and found having it on constantly at a certain thermostat temp is no better off.

4 bed detached

Time4changeagain · 19/01/2025 20:27

3 bed semi. 1960’s Timber frame
Disabled & home all day. Thermostat set to min 17 during day, 18 evenings & 15 overnight
1st Nov- 27th Dec.
Total for gas was £71

CandyLeBonBon · 19/01/2025 20:28

I paid 175 (actual usage - dd is £146). 4 bed semi (new build - 6 years old). I put it on for an hour or two when it's about 17.5. Once it warms up it stays warm for hours.

Somethingcloseby · 19/01/2025 20:29

WhatToWrite · 19/01/2025 08:02

We have a big draughty Victorian semi so our usage in December was over £500.

I think the main issue is the temperatures you're mentioning, they are far too cold! I'd be completely miserable in a house where the heating was set to 16c.

Old house, EV car and £500 in December too. Scares me. Temp is around 19/20 goes up a bit if we use the log burner

Energyhero · 19/01/2025 20:29

£80 for Dec. Have it on for maybe 4 hours in the evening. 3 bed semi

Blondeshavemorefun · 19/01/2025 20:36

MaryGreenhill · 19/01/2025 20:50

Four bedroom detached House

Fakingitnotmakingit · 19/01/2025 20:51

£193.95 for gas. Our electric was £187.47 for the same period. 6 bed semi

xyz111 · 19/01/2025 20:59

4 bed detached. We pay £160 a month.

xyz111 · 19/01/2025 21:01

4 bed detached. We pay £160 a month.

That was our DD. Our actual was £99 electric and £129 gas.

35965a · 19/01/2025 21:03

£291 😬 (paid monthly with reading; no direct debit) but I had the heating on constantly!

PeppyGreenFinch · 19/01/2025 21:04

Our gas bill is £50 per month for a 3 bed semi. Heating is on mornings and evenings.

No idea if we’re in credit or what.

The bill is in DH’a name so the gas company won’t talk to me.
