What was your energy bill for Dec 2024? 4 bed semi detached

Hi all

Husband is saying we're having the heating on too much / too high. Bill for December was £275. It's a four bed semi detached house, had all new heating system and boiler about two years ago, and new double glazed windows around the same time.

He likes it put it on about 16-17 degrees. I am comfortable at 18.5 - it never goes above that. Goes down to 9 at night time.

I absolutely HATE feeling cold. Possible thyroid issue that is being looked into, but when I'm cold it is all encompassing and I cannot focus on anything (WFH two days per week).

So I'm curious - if you live in a similar size property, what was your energy bill for Dec 2024 please?

(Just realised we were obviously all home a bit more than usual late Dec as no school or work)

Thanks

Mine was just under £240 for similar sized, detached though. Very inefficient old house, in chilly Scotland, it's never more than 17c indoors and often around 15c, we wear a lot of layers.

Didimum · 19/01/2025 08:28

Sounds a tad high. Ours was £300, but our 4-bed is Victorian, single glazed and freezing. We keep it at 18 at all times and between 20-22 when in during the day.

40andlovelife · 19/01/2025 08:32

£420. 3 bed semi but we have a hot tub and despite them being marked red as only costing about £40 a month to run they bloody don't!

StubbleTurnips · 19/01/2025 08:34

4 bed Victorian (high ceilings) here, always freezing. We keep it at 16-18 otherwise we struggle with damp issues.
£218 for December, but the log burner ran all day every day for actual warmth - mostly electric due to WFH

Live in a council flat with very poor insulation and it gets extremely cold on the 5th floor. Have to turn heating up to at least 26 to keep the place warm enough to inhabit it with my almost 6mth old. Goes on between 7 and 9 and goes off between 9 and 10. I've just paid £290 with BG for a 1 bedroom flat

NoWordForFluffy · 19/01/2025 08:36

Usage for December was just over £149 combined (4 bed, new build terraced townhouse). £65 of that was gas.

The bottom two floors are kept at about 19° from 6.30 - 20.30, then down to 15°. The top floor is at 18° in the morning, 17° in the afternoon / evening and then 12° overnight.

4 bed semi, but with terrible insulation upstairs. I pay £130 to Octopus monthly and I'm usually in credit by the summer. I'm single and have my dc here 50% of the time though, and work 12 hour days when don't have dc so probably not comparable to a family of 4, especially if working from home

What was your usage for December? It's easy to find on the Octopus app.

BendingSpoons · 19/01/2025 08:46

Ours was billed mid Nov to mid Dec (so possibly not as cold?). We paid £200 for heating, £50 for electric (we do have solar panels). This is actual usage. 4 bed detached in a warm part of the country. Heating on 19 or 20 most of the day as someone is home most of the time. Goes off 10pm-7am but doesn't drop that much. DH has worked VERY hard on insulation and efficiency - new roof (needed as 100 years old), new boiler, insulation on external walls, new windows (also needed). We are lucky to have a warm home. It is also prone to damp even at those temperatures, so less heating is a false economy.

dementedpixie · 19/01/2025 08:48

Mine was £96 gas and £267 electricity (have electric car). Heating at around 19⁰C but only for a few hours am and pm

hazelnutlatte · 19/01/2025 08:49

Ours was £170 for a 4 bed detached. Last year it was £300 but we have an air source heat pump and have switched to octopus and their heat pump deal and it has made a massive difference.

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 19/01/2025 08:51

313 for l large Edwardian house, occupied all day.

Zuve · 19/01/2025 08:51

Ours is£220. 4 bedroom house detached. We have it on at 20 c

ItWasTheBestOfTimes · 19/01/2025 08:53

Se live in a 20 year old 3 bed semi. We
used around £200 of fuel in December, slightly more of this was electricity than gas. I have thermostat set to 20 in the day and 18 overnight, the heating kicks in little and often throughout the day. I got used to this temp when DDs were newborn and now anything less feels cold. Monthly DD is £130.

Sallysoup · 19/01/2025 08:53

£303. 2000 sq ft old draughty house and I was off work for the majority of Dec so the heating will have been on more than usual.

Tiredteachermummyof2 · 19/01/2025 10:00

Mine was £295 for December gas and electric. 3 bed mid terrace someone always home and heating on 18. We do have an electric car though and because of damp issues run 2 dehumidifiers and a heated airer a lot. Use tumble drier once a week. On octopus intelligent go tarrif. Run out of credit on my account now so will have to pay more next month.

WynneWu · 19/01/2025 10:01

4 bed terrace, £215 for G&E
Quite pleased as last December was 275

LostittoBostik · 19/01/2025 10:06

Ours is £230 a month averaged over the whole year so must be higher in winter. And we're terraced. But high heat needs due to people home every day (toddler around, 2 parents often wfh etc)

ReignOfError · 19/01/2025 10:19

3 bed semi, heating is on at 18.5 for 1.5 hours in the morning and 2.5 hours in the evening, 16 all day, and 8 overnight. £94 actual (not direct debit) gas cost. Octopus fixed rate.

Pinksmyfavoritecolour · 19/01/2025 10:22

£295 for gas and electric, 4 bed semi, our heating kicks in if it goes below 18, I work from home.

TrellisMonday · 19/01/2025 10:25

5 bed detached- £155 for December.

We only heat the room we're in up to around 16 degrees, wear layers, have electric blankets, and the house sits at 9-12 degrees.

Edit to say that's gas & elctric

Almostwelsh · 19/01/2025 10:28

4 bed link detached 1970s build with cavity wall insulation, loft insulation and double glazing. Gas heating and hot water, everything else, including the cooker on electric. No electric vehicles.

288 for December of which 132 was gas for heating.

We were home all over Xmas and were never cold, although on the milder days we only heated the house morning and evening. We don't have heating on overnight. Thermostat set for 21 degrees when heating is on, although the house never seems to get below 15 even at night, provided the heating is used daily.

Nomoreitsnothappening · 19/01/2025 10:28

£192 (pay £128 a month).
4 bed semi (1930s). I'm at home all the time and disabled so struggle to move around but am on disability benefits so need to keep the heating off some times. I suspect that January's bill will be higher because of the cold spell that went on for over a week here.

sunbum · 19/01/2025 10:31

I pay £220 a month and have a large amount of credit build up. 5 bed detached, 20y old house. New boiler and Nest couple years ago. We both work from home and have it at 22/23 all day!

The OP didn't ask how much your DD is though. What was your usage for December?
