Is it disrespectful/problematic to take a sex toy in hand luggage to Marrakech?

We are going to Marrakech for a holiday in a few weeks and I would like to take my vibrator.

I’m likely to take just cabin bags.

Will I encounter issues either going through or leaving the airport? I know it’s not illegal but I don’t want issues - or to appear disrespectful.

No judgments please, advice only.

You’re clearly very sensitive, so it is utterly bemusing you want risk this level of embarassment.

I was behind someone who at security had an open container of sea salt. It triggered a search x ray whatever you call it. Let me say EVERYTHING shows clear. There it was a bright blue strap on. She was elderly and my sister and I were in shock! So really I would not risk the embarrassment.

Beeloux · 09/01/2025 14:34

Used to live in UAE and a friend got in trouble at airport customs for having a sex toy.
I was cabin crew and my bag once got flagged up during security as I had one of them metal back massagers that are a similar shape of a cock and balls. Had to show the customs officer that it was indeed a back massager and not a dildo. 😂

WilfredsPies · 09/01/2025 14:35

You want to take a sex toy to Morocco? A deeply religious, patriarchal society, where security officials do whatever they fancy, with few repercussions and NGOs have reported that victims of rape have been threatened by police with criminal charges of having sex outside of marriage in order to deter them making formal complaints against their attackers? What’s your plan in case you get a deeply religious customs official who doesn’t believe in women’s sexual liberation?

What are you planning for next year? Drug smuggling in Thailand? Public sex in Dubai? Or perhaps rock climbing up the pyramids?

I think the embarassment would be too much for me. It won’t be disrespectful etc. I also don’t see the hand comment as unnecessary. I was thinking the same thing.

I would be mortified if it was hauled out infront of everyone! You could get a new one there and then leave it there..I would purely to avoid the risk of death from embarrassment

I have just gone down a wormhole I never thought I'd enter, but here is a bit of useful advice from the Durex website:

CAN YOU TAKE SEX TOYS ON A PLANE?
Whether or not you want to take a vibrator in checked luggage or a more discreet sex toy with you in your carry-on, there are a couple of points that you need to make sure you have addressed. At the end of the day, we’re all human, and sexual urges come to us at the most unexpected times - including over the holiday.
The general rule is that as long as you can turn the device on when instructed to do so by an airport security official, the item will be allowed on board. If you can’t prove that the sex toy is harmless, it can be removed from your luggage and destroyed.
The answer is to keep all intimate items inside your checked suitcase, in a clear plastic bag if possible. This is not only more hygienic, but in the event of a random bag search, it saves the customs officer from having to handle all of your sex aids. It’s worth noting that UK luggage restrictions state that any ‘tools’ need to be under 6cm in size. Whether vibrators fall into that category is up for debate, but it’s something to think about when choosing which of your toys to bring on holiday with you.
Finally, be aware of any laws or restrictions in the country you are travelling to. In India, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, sex toys are illegal while in many other parts of the world including parts of Africa and Asia, it is illegal to be gay or lesbian. Always check local laws before flying! Keep these things in mind when booking your trip.

In Morocco, 5 years ago, I was staying in a Riad with a pool in the courtyard. It was 45 degrees.

I was asked poltely, NOT to wear my bikini as it was Ramadam and interfered with the male "sex abstinence thoughts" at that time.

That is my last attempt at making you understand it would be a bad idea.

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 09/01/2025 14:50

Surely this has to be a wind up, can people not cope without their vibrator when on holiday. Are there not other things they can be doing instead? And asking if it will be offensive in a partly Muslim country is just naive.

Doggymummar · 09/01/2025 14:52

I was going to Amsterdam for valentine's one year with my boyfriend and had my gift in my cabin bag, not knowing what was in it. I was made to open it as it looked suspicious going through x-ray and I was mortified. It was a vibrator and handcuffs. The handcuffs were confiscated with the comment, we can't have you handcuffing yourself to the pilot but I got to keep the vibrator

MWNA · 09/01/2025 14:55

sleepitoff · 09/01/2025 11:38

I think the comment about using my hand is judgemental about using a vibrator.

Jesus don't be so silly.

Actually, I think there is a fair bit of judgement on this thread. Lots of remarks that suggest that what the OP is suggesting is offputting/disgusting. It's feels pretty prudish.

Whilst I probably wouldn't bother taking one, as it seems potentially a hassle, I totally understand why the OP would want to. Most women i know use and carry a vibrator with them when they travel.

Exactly, and why shouldn't she take one if she wants to? It's got nothing to do with not coping for a few days without it 🙄

Growlybear83 · 09/01/2025 15:25

I wouldn't be concerned about any potential embarrassment if the vibrator is found, and that's not what the OP was asking. I agree that it is extremely unpleasant to think that immigration officers may have to handle a used sex toy, but the question was whether the OP COULD take a vibrator to Marrakech. I find it very odd that anyone would even consider taking a vibrator to a very religious Muslim country in the first place, but much of the advice on this thread has been that it would be very unwise to do so and if it's discovered, it's extremely likely to cause offence, with the potential for unpleasant repercussions.

Well quite.

Put it another way. If someone is happy to go to a country where homosexuality is illegal and there is an appalling track record on women's and children's rights but she is worried a sex toy might be 'disrespectful' I'm going to judge.

"I can excuse child marriage, but I draw the line at wanking with my own hand!"

PortiasBiscuit · 09/01/2025 15:34

I am willing to bet the farm that security guards see these all the time and that they will not give a monkey’s.

garlictwist · 09/01/2025 15:48

I took mine in hand luggage recently (although to Hungary not marrakech). I just took the battery out so that it wouldn't go off by accident. My bags weren't searched.

I don't think Morrocan security guards will see that many simply because:

a) Many of the people travelling will be Muslim locals travelling to and from home so they won't be carrying such items.
b) Most people don't take their sex toys on holiday.
c) Those that do would put them in their hold luggage.
d) People who may take their sex toys on holiday with them, wouldn't do so when travelling to a Muslim country out of respect for where they are going.
e) Most travellers would have done a simple Google search that would have informed them that "immoral items" are prohibited and it doesn't take a genius to know that a sex toy would be considered (rightly or wrongly) an "immoral item" in a Muslim country and therefore wouldn't be travelling with one.

Snapncrackle · 09/01/2025 16:10

just take the batteries out
airport staff have seen it all and then some 😂
it you remove the batteries they are less likely to check it

sunflowersngunpowdr · 09/01/2025 16:27

I wouldn't but then I wouldn't ever go to that s hole country ever again.

i hardly think taking a sex toy, in personal luggage, is quite the same as public sex or drug smuggling. ….jeez.,🙄😂

If these countries want the money from Western tourists, then they need to accept we have different ways. As we do with other tourists, 🤷‍♀️

Edited

Alternatively tourists could respect other countries beliefs.

They could, but they don’t. Personal luggage has nothing to do with anyone, assuming it’s not drugs or anything. 🤷‍♀️
