I’ve put this on AIBU as it appears to be most read. A brilliant article about the rape gangs and the ensuing cover up.

It’s a start. The only way to put a stop to this madness is to show just how serious this government is about disinformation.

But ultimately, banning X and Facebook needs to be a priority at this point. We may even need an alternative social media that is better regulated to deal with hate speech and propoganda, and that is linked to people’s real identities.

Your trolling is a bit too obvs now.

Besides if X and Facebook were banned, where would all the heavy social media users post their screen shots and snippets from Mumsnet highlighting how awful we all are…

Ereshkigalangcleg · 08/01/2025 22:51

I'm getting mixed up with the Home Office report in 2020. UCL research was heavily cited. Again they chose to pretend that grooming gangs weren't a specific phenomenon. It's spin.

Censorship. A tool for every mendacious government.

@C8H10N4O2, your posts here are some of the best and most measured in the whole debate. Thank you.

If the victims of the grooming gangs are anything like me, then they do not want to be used as political point scores.

I think it's for them to say that, not this young woman. That whole article is a "political point score" on the part of the newspaper, where the actual victims of the specific thing being talked about are voiceless. Not appropriate.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 08/01/2025 22:57

And let's not forget that the worst group of paedophiles this country has had are all very deathly. Very influential, white men. Jimmy Saville, Gary Glitter, Golf Harris, Stewart Hall etc al

I don't think we want to get into which individual men are the "worst paedophiles ever" really Confused

i do think that we get a bit sidetracked by the racism.

When we describe things like "grooming gangs" we must be able to use clear, accurate language - preferably in a non-inflammatory way - so that people know what they are looking out for.

We described paedophile priests fairly accurately after all. But we do have to be careful not to inflame already precarious race relations, and we have to apply the law fairly.

So we agree that we can call paedophiles who are priests " paedophile priests " which is an accurate description, but we can't call paedophiles who are Muslim " paedophile Muslims " because of religious/ racial sensitivities? That just doesn't make sense. If you object to the last descriptor then surely you can't agree with the first, given that both make reference to religion?

GeneralPeter · 08/01/2025 23:03

@Stefanodad

But don’t embarrass yourself, and do the victims a disservice by pretending that sexual crime is somehow imported

Why would sexual crime not be imported? When I travel, I take my culture and behaviours with me. So pretty much does everyone else.

Unless you think that police detection/deterrence of sexual crime in this country is so perfect that it flattens all behavioural distinctions then the only remaining question is “are some cultures in the world more oppressive, misogynistic or accepting of sexual crime than others?”

I think the overwhelming evidence is that the answer to that is ‘yes’. Don’t you?

PeppyGreenFinch · 08/01/2025 23:03

JRSKSSBH · 08/01/2025 22:49

Oh what moronic poppycock. It isn’t a lie. You’d rather apologise because another child has been raped than deal in difficult facts.

Nonsensical.

Muslims have been called Muslim Monsters on this thread and hardly anyone has pushed back on this. How is this acceptable? Would you accept Christian Monsters? Jewish Monsters?

Yes, of course you don’t, because it doesn’t fit into the anti-Muslim agenda.

I certainly wouldn't want some prick of a man (who is on dodgy ground with who he associates with) trying to talk for me. And tbh, what actually needs to happen is that rather than all this uproar, something needs to be done to address the culture where some (mainly) men, of all nationalities, feel empowered to treat children in this way.

As females we are still very much at the mercy of men, most females are physically weaker that men and if we are assaulted there is still an undercurrent that we must have done something to deserve it. Whether that be dressing in what may be considered a "provocative" manner, dared to walk home along after dark or having had a little too much to drink. Or in the cases this thread is talking about, simply having had a chaotic homelife.

There is a brilliant Tracy Ullman sketch that highlights this issue. In it she's interviewing a mugging victim, using the blaming terminology that is often used towards women/girls who have experienced SA.

Anyway I think that what I'm saying is the grooming gangs are a symptom of societal problem, where somehow the victims are blamed for what happens to them. And that is blamed by the authorities abusers (of all races and religions) and let's be honest by some of the members of the public.

It's this that needs to.be tackled more than anything. Because until attitudes towards.the victims changes then the crimes will.simply carry on.

HappyPanda613 · 08/01/2025 23:17

I think what’s really ironic in all this, when you look at the stats about offending demographics, it is actually white people who should be asking the Pakistani community what we should be doing to stop sexual abuse in our own community. They are clearly doing a better job of protecting women and girls than we are.

Feelingathomenow · 08/01/2025 23:17

Brefugee · 08/01/2025 20:45

no - i don't think the law calls it racism. (IANAL and all that)
because in the UK white people (specifically white men) hold all the positions of power and influence and most of the wealth.

But those people can be subject to something akin to racism due to being in the minority. I'm sure there's a word for it but my brain is broken.

Clearly a law that needs to change

A priest is a vocation, like a teacher, doctor, a lawyer. The poster didn’t say paedo Christians.

I didn't see that post. They were referring to all Muslims as monsters, or all of the paedophiles in the rape gang as monsters? there's a very big difference clearly - the first would be obviously unacceptable and the second one would be a very accurate description, in the vein of " paedo priests".

Their words were ‘please give all the tragic victims of these Muslim Monsters…’

This is clearly racist and inflammatory language. Other people are never described as these Christian rapists or these Sikh rapists.

I'm so glad this has taken off the whole issue is wider and deeper than originally thought and we have moved on a great deal since 2007 with the me too movement and Saville etc.
