I’ve put this on AIBU as it appears to be most read. A brilliant article about the rape gangs and the ensuing cover up.

How can we even start to address the issues with the women in Afghanistan when we can't name the problem in Rotherham and Oldham without being accused of being far right or racist?

I just think suggesting raising this is right wing highlights the fact that the left, as it currently stands, does have a woman problem.

It's not racist to speak about links between religion and harms to women and children. We shouldn't have to brush things under the carpet.

If we want to support a truly multicultural society with genuine community cohesion this NEEDS to be discussed.

I really don't get why people would prefer to castigate provocateurs like Musk rather than address the issues that enable him to poke the stick.

Well said. Thank you.

If that position was taken by the government I would support it of course. It shouldn’t be done to fulfil the agenda of someone who wants to divide and doesn’t give a monkeys about the people of Oldham or Rochdale.

That is the exact scenario at play here. Jess Phillips was asked to undertake this review by Oldham councillors last summer, she pushed it back to Oldham in December (cane to light January. This is what people are talking about.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 08/01/2025 16:29

So absolutely nothing about the reasons behind these gangs then, all about social services.

Yes, exactly. They don't want to recognise the underlying common elements as a specific thing.

Well it is not like I was wrong when I made that post. No doubt thanks to being emboldened in this thread and other ones like it I have seen recently a thread on the new proposed Islamophobia definition that the right wing are already attempting to pick apart.

it's misogyny to deny the girls were (and still are) being harmed and to want to sweep this under the carpet for fear of being seen as Islamophobic.

The law should be applied without fear or favour.

What i want to see is justice for harmed women and girls. Always. That is always my number 1 priority: justice for women and girls.

This is getting absurd to the point of harassment of this poster. Why are you so obsessed about 2-3 year old posts (she might have changed user names and doesn’t want to divulge past user names).

GofE · 08/01/2025 16:31

Well, i have found this thread shocking.

Yes the media are making this political. But really it should be about justice for the victims. Regardless of political persuasion; any rape/assault should be investigated.

As others (a minority it seems) have said, the reason the 'Pakistani gang's' case gets tensions high is because of the blatant brushing under the carpet; like Saville and co (we were similarly up in arms about that 'white man'), and aren't we glad that was finally investigated; albeit too late.

Lets not leave this too late.

Again, with your attitude I wonder that you can expect Muslims to want to integrate with you.

Same old ‘Muslim ate my guinea pig’ propaganda.

I hope Keir Starmer and the Labour Party make a robust statement on what they intend to do to protect the Pakistani and greater Muslim community in the wake of these outlandish attacks by foreign saboteurs. They must be feeling so alienated right now surrounding the discourse online and in so called media outlets like GB news.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 08/01/2025 16:33

I just did AS, there were no posts from you in 2022 or 2023 on actioning the enquiry.

I said I was talking about the issue of these gangs for years, not the toothless "inquiry". It's Labour who are falling back on these recommendations, they're a start but not enough. Then let them get the fuck on with it rather than whining about the "far right".

I agree. Calling Muslims an evil in a good and fair country is Islamophobia.

I think Muslims would be within their rights to think ‘fuck this’ and withdraw into their communities.

Never fear, there are toolkits in the pipeline!

i do think it is bonkers to insist that nobody be allowed to talk about anything unless they have been talking about it for years.

People can become aware of various things at any point. Or they might even change their mind/stance on some things.

the MN mantra applies: when people show you who they are, and all that.

Meanwhile. What is important is protecting women and girls. Justice for women and girls. And for that justice to be applied fairly, and to be seen to be applied.

Applying the law without fear or favour is simply not possible in a pluralistic society. There are always going to be communities and identity groups that need greater protections from the dominant culture and that’s just how it is.

Thank you. I have spoken about this issue plenty under this name, just not particularly the inquiry.

Alexandra2001 · 08/01/2025 16:36

BananaAppleOrange · 08/01/2025 16:15

Arguing with Labour fanatics about this reminds me of arguing with Scottish Nationalists who claim Nicola Sturgeon was the best thing to happen to Scottish Education….

Look at it logically? instead of calling people names you don't agree with? not all Tories want an inquiry, just as many Lab want one too.

The new inquiry would be reporting on areas where the new recommendations haven't yet taken place or given time work, so their findings are then out of date.

It would be a mess.

That is why, until very recently the Tories didn't want a new inquiry either & refused Oldham too.

Aside, how many inquiries do you actually want? wouldn't be better to enact the recommendations first?

Personally, i think so many vested interests are now involved, it may be better to, longer term ask the UN or similar to investigate, our inquires seem to take years, by which time its left the public interest.

Broken record.

Labour are already protecting the victims, and they have half a decade to show you just that. Thank god for everybody it’s not the Tories anymore.

That far right gets a kick in popularity whenever those issues come back to spotlight is our own doing - for years people with genuine concerns were shut down and any debate on cultural differences and possible implications was shut down, so no even right wing politicians wanted to discuss it.

We either have difficult but respectful public conversation or we let the groups that are fueled by hatred and prejudice to take over and exploit the topic.

HappyPanda613 · 08/01/2025 11:47

Please, can we stop talking about this already? It’s been days now and it will only further embolden the far right!

It’s attitudes like yours which have led to the cover up of these disgusting rape gangs.

And can we dump this ridiculous and tired trope of accusing those of us who would like to see justice for the victims dismissed as ‘far right’.

It’s lazy and dangerous.

Yes young white girls, the victims of the torture and rape gangs need protection from those what appear to be in the dominant culture, in fact so dominant they have spent years twisting the rape of children round so the victims are blamed. I want British society to be protected from that group.

so they shouldn't be punished? Fuck that.
I think it was Rotherham where various council members, apparently "investigating" the grooming gangs were related to some of them and swept it under the carpet.

I took citizenship of the country i live in (hence the name). And i undertook to abide by the laws here. Not laws i think should be here, not special laws that should apply to me because i am not ethnically or culturally from here - all of them. Part of the citizenship process was a test on how much in understand, have read and inwardly digested of the culture and laws here. As well as acquiring at least a particular minimum proficiency in the language.

And i expect the law to apply here to me and everyone else in the same way. As i expect the UK laws to apply to everyone there.
