Off the lead and enjoying a run around, we were the only people in that area of the national trust park,
It was closed to cars and not many people brave (or stupid) enough to walk.

We stumbled upon a lovely little family of snowmen,
however the one that she could reach was a really small but brilliant feathers McGraw with a carrot for a beak. I was going to take a photo and realised she's pinched his beak and ate it!

She's never stolen anything before but she was so fast!

‘Unstitched psychological wound’ I am dying, what a fantastic turn of phrase

You clearly haven’t come across any bad owners. Unfortunately we did.

So keep on laughing, but it’s you who looks unhinged, unkind and like the kind of person that might sadly do this.

Bloody Hell are you still here dragging down what was a lovely thread?

A lovely threads describing the kind of behaviour that has given my DS a phobia of dogs?

When there’s a pile on, what do you expect? Kindness?

Bullies only understand brute force sadly.

Let it go.

PlopSofa · 08/01/2025 08:48

Well yes we should probably all do that… but it’s upsetting to see people laughing at behaviour that gave my DS a phobia. It’s like dog owners think they’re above others because… “it’s my dog”

And it take it you do? Seeing as you’re still interacting I’d say you’re matching my exact behaviour.

Great 😆🥳

MissysMeemaw · 08/01/2025 09:10

I don't think this is cute or amusing. My kids built a snowman and were gutted when the next day, his nose was missing - our Ring camera showed someone had let their dog into our garden to have a run around, piss, then snatch the carrot.

I would be similarly annoyed if someone had come in themselves to take the carrot nose, or destroy the snowman we had spent ages putting together. Botnh antisocial and rude.

As for dogs snatching food from children, again, not acceptable. Those finding it funny are exactly why so many people are growing to dislike dogs and their awful, selfish owners. It has happened to both my kids, both times the owners were oblivious. My youngest has also been knocked over by mid-sized dogs twice, and chased - dog thought it was fun, my child found it terrifying. Just because you find your dog cute, doesn't mean everybody else does. Leash your dog and don't let them come up to anyone without being invited.

FWIW, I agree.

I've had big dogs all my life, but some of what is being laughed about here is antisocial behaviour. Really, your dog shouldn't steal food from someone's child or wee on someone's possessions/clothing. People can claim that the thread is light hearted but is it really?

One post states that the dog is a "spaniel cross not a Cane Corso". How is that relevant? You are actually statistically far more likely to be bitten by a spaniel or a Labrador than by a Cane Corso. Sure, a CC can potentially do you more damage but that shouldn't be seen as an excuse to condone bad behaviour in a smaller dog. The dog size should not be a determining factor as to what is acceptable behaviour. Stealing a carrot from a snowman or nicking an item of food at home is harmless and amusing but taking something from a stranger's child is dangerous behaviour in any dog.

I know I'll come in for abuse for saying this, but think about it - would any of you really see it as funny if a Cane Corso or Kangal dog took food from your child's hand? Most of you wouldn't. You'd label it dangerous. So how is it okay for a spaniel to do it? To a tiny child that can be just as scary.

So I think @PlopSofa has a very valid viewpoint. There's a fine line between cute and antisocial.

Hoppinggreen · 08/01/2025 09:36

Theres also a fine line between valid viewpoint and going on and on about the same thing to the extent that it makes you look unhinged.

I am a dog owner (a carrot loving Lab!) I have children and I can understand that some people are less tolerable or agreeable to the opportunist streak in dogs that others find funny or cute. I would also say I’m a responsible person and most importantly a good advocate for my dog to keep her and others safe and happy…

However I CANNOT understand anyones reasoning to come onto a light hearted thread full pet owners sharing their 4 legged friends and their tales and think Ahh this is a great opportunity to tell all these owners how terrible that are being and expect it be met with understanding and regret.

Would my lab have the opportunity to take a sausage roll out of a baby’s hand in a buggy, absolutely not! Her nature is not one that I would trust anywhere near a baby’s hand or mouth (she was a rescue and is unsure with new people she also is possessive around food) I would not be advocating for her if I put her into a position to do so.

Did I laugh at the lovely little dog above doing similar, the carrot thieves as well as love all the gorgeous woofer pictures?!…

Yes!! Because I read the thread in the tone it was meant, light hearted.

Hoppinggreen · 08/01/2025 10:18

Well I just sat DDog down and had a long conversation with him about how snowman Jeff must have felt when he got his face eaten and how seeing that happen could have traumatised other snowmen in the vicinity, as well as it being upsetting for any carrots who happened to be passing by.
Sadly I have to report that he seems unrepentant and would most likely do it again - at least that what I assume he meant by licking his privates

Because it is NOT light-hearted to those of us who are sick of being irritated by dogs and their selfish owners - I do not want my children having food snatched out of their hands by a dog, and it's not funny - seems many dog owners think that it is. If I have convinced any dog owner to take better control of their dogs and not allow this behaviour, that is a good thing, and why I commented.

I wasn't bothered by dogs until the last 10 or so years, when it seems owners are becoming more and more slack about appropriate dog behaviour.

I stand by that comment. 2 months is a long time. But if you want to argue to toss on something else be my guest. I have time on my hands and not much else to do right now 😆

and I’m hardly seeing the moral high ground on here. Just lots and lots of people offering rudeness and nothing in the way of understanding or kindness.

My DS goes bright red and can hardly breathe when a dog comes close. Do you know how hard it is to go to a park now?

So no I won’t get off my high horse.

not a single person has offered any kindness in the face of what is now a difficult thing to live with. Dogs are everywhere.

How do I fix this? I would actually like some help but you lot just seem to enjoy calling me names and like I’m psychotic.

You are all dog owners. I’m asking you to do better.

Seems like it’s pointless and my time is wasted here. You’ve all been very rude and entitled and only further proven that some of you really don’t care how your dog behaves the way you have spoken to me.

in the meantime I now have to find some way to help my DS get over this. I’m not sure he’s ever going to change now and I find that very very sad.

I have great empathy for your son, I really do. I’ve worked through extreme anxiety in my own life and my DC’s life and come through the other side. It’s no fun having a kid go bright red, stop breathing and then vomiting everywhere because their anxiety is triggered.

However it is not all dogs fault that your son has this anxiety. As you said dogs are everywhere - as was the trigger for my son’s anxiety. It was going into shops near closing time should you wish to know. I’ve had to work through explain and explain and explain and hold his hand and reassure etc. etc. etc. I can’t avoid going into shops near closing time (and when I say near I mean 3 hours before), and I can’t demand that shops don’t close, therefore I’ve had to work around it.

It was a shop that switched off the lights 10 mins before closing that triggered this anxiety. However I know that’s not the underlying issue, and I expect the same will be true of your son.

At the moment it’s quite clear that your anxiety about your son’s phobia is feeding back to him - and you need to deal with that. You need to teach him to be calm and collected and LOGICAL in his assessment of situations. Calm dog on lead - no danger. Massive dog running wild out of control barking with tail down and ears back - danger.

I honestly suggest you create a new thread elsewhere and ask for advice. This was a fun lighthearted thread about dogs doing daft things, and the fact you can’t see the difference at the moment is why I’m telling you that you need to deal with your anxiety first. I’ve had to do it, it sucks, but it’s the only way forward for you and your son.
