To think I'm not "too old to wear Dr martens"...

Just that really.
Told my neighbour (she's mid 30s, I'm 42) that I was looking out for a nice pair of platform dr martens as I've heard the bouncing sole is good for those with back pain (I have sciatica) and she chuckled and said they may be good for my back but not for my street cred as I'd look like mutton dressed as lamb...!
I'm more than a little put out but not put off the idea of docs!
Opinions everyone? Is 42 too old for boots that have been popular with all kinds of different folks since the 1960s?!

Ignore her. She sounds horrid.

I’m not much younger than you, I love my DMs.

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 06/01/2025 23:12

Honestly, how dare she??! I am incensed on your behalf. Firstly, no one is too old for anything they want to wear, and secondly, DMs are a classic.

MartinCrieffsLemon · 06/01/2025 23:12

Doc Martens are ageless!

littlemissprosseco · 06/01/2025 23:12

Never too old for DMs

sloecat · 06/01/2025 23:12

You are never too old for DMs.

SquigglePigs · 06/01/2025 23:12

Of course you aren't. My friend is 50 and looks fab in her DM's. Wear what you love.

ZipCode · 06/01/2025 23:13

Your neighbour is wrong, doc martens are classic for any age.

Newfoundzestforlife · 06/01/2025 23:13

I was so taken aback I didn't really know what to say! I just said "Oh I don't think so"....

LushLemonTart · 06/01/2025 23:14

Fuck her. End of.

IReallyNeedThisToWork · 06/01/2025 23:14

Never too old!! I’m 57 and have 3 pairs!

MellowJello77 · 06/01/2025 23:14

No age is too old for whatever you want to wear. Wear them and love them. 41 year old here with a few pairs and my husband absolutely hates them - not cause he thinks I’m old - just that he thinks they are hideous - he calls them my skinhead boots 😂😂

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 06/01/2025 23:14

What? Why...? They're just boots. Confused How is anyone 'too old' to wear boots?

Fargo79 · 06/01/2025 23:14

She sounds... pleasant.

They're for anyone who wants to wear them. And I've seen plenty of actually older women (not 42 FFS) wearing the shit out of Dr Martens.

Oodiks · 06/01/2025 23:15

LOL, I'm 60 this year and I still wear Dr Martens!

To quote the great Alexis Sayle:

"[Spoken: There's a lot of strife in this country at the moment, racial strife, class strife. There's one thing really that we have in common, one thing that unites us. And what is it???]

It's not class or ideology
Colour creed or roots
The only thing that unites us
Is Doctor Martens boots
Oh!

Dr Martens, Dr Martens, Dr Martens boots, Oh!
Dr Martens, Dr Martens, Dr Martens boots.

Doctor Marten gave his boots to the world
so that everybody could be free
They're classless, matchless, heat-resistant, waterproof
And retail for only 19 pounds and 99p"

Okay, that last line is out of date...

Newfoundzestforlife · 06/01/2025 23:15

Ha ha, quite. It's certainly put me off her to be honest....it just came across so sneery and catty.

RememberToSmile1980 · 06/01/2025 23:15

No way! That's horrible of her to say. I'm 44 and looking to buy my first pair! You can rock DM's at any age as they are truly timeless!

SpanThatWorld · 06/01/2025 23:15

58 and have 3 pairs

Wear them every day at work

BobbyBiscuits · 06/01/2025 23:15

DMs are for all ages. As are all clothes, as long as they suit the wearer.
I'm not sure they're good for back pain though.

HappiestSleeping · 06/01/2025 23:15

Plus one for never being too old for DMs. Pretty sure Vivienne Westwood was rocking them right to the end.

Newfoundzestforlife · 06/01/2025 23:16

I know, absolutely ridiculous 🙄

OP posts:
Lentilweaver · 06/01/2025 23:16

I don't believe in this mutton dressed as lamb nonsense.

Barney16 · 06/01/2025 23:16

I'm 60 and wear mine every day. Have asked to be buried in mine.

RM2013 · 06/01/2025 23:16

Ignore! I’m 50 and love mine

Thebusinesswilljuststealyoursoul · 06/01/2025 23:16

52 here and love mine !! I've had young uns compliment me and ask where I got them !

Randomontheinternet25 · 06/01/2025 23:17

There are better quality shoes/boots in a similar style. Solovair etc
Imo DM's are fashion shoes now, pretty ageless but definitely not worth the money.
