To think I'm not "too old to wear Dr martens"...

Just that really.
Told my neighbour (she's mid 30s, I'm 42) that I was looking out for a nice pair of platform dr martens as I've heard the bouncing sole is good for those with back pain (I have sciatica) and she chuckled and said they may be good for my back but not for my street cred as I'd look like mutton dressed as lamb...!
I'm more than a little put out but not put off the idea of docs!
Opinions everyone? Is 42 too old for boots that have been popular with all kinds of different folks since the 1960s?!

Even if I saw a 90 year old wearing them, I'd think it looked cool, any age can wear them, and I say that as someone that's never worn them, not my style but like them on others.

Lavender14 · 07/01/2025 23:47

She should know better.

I think dms are great at any age. The idea of "mutton dressed as lamb" is a horrible concept anyway.

autumngirl714 · 08/01/2025 00:30

Whaaaatttt! I can assure you OP... nobody thinks like this!
I have 2 pairs of DM and they are by far the best quality boots I've ever had!
Buy them and enjoy!

I'm another one baffled by someone actually saying this. It sounds like a completely unlikely sentence that you'd read in a crap novel.

But anyway. I'm fairly sure that you knew which way this vote was going to go, OP. Yes, of course wearing DM's at any age is a non-issue.

Spot on @IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads
I did the same. The design details are better too. And it's so nice knowing you're buying into British heritage and quality, but without the ubiquity of Docs. DMs are a bit of a con really these days - less quality, and masquerading as a British icon when in fact they no longer are.

Take a look at Lanx too, OP - v comfy and made in Lancashire. Mine cope with muddy dog walks, and after a polish with dubbin look great with a skirt.

I've got a pair of Lanx too. I'm incredibly proud of them and they get regular compliments. Great to see them get a mention.

Her them and when you see hear great her with a cheery ‘lovely day to be dressed at lamb!’

Come again?

faffadoodledo · 08/01/2025 18:24

@Isittimeformynapyet yes! my (young) dentist even complimented me on mine the other day as I was lying in the chair! I do think Docs have their place (and worn by any age for the purposes of this thread!) but they are so ubiquitous, and the quality isn't what it was. I love wearing my Lanx. So warm.

And I just love wearing something that I know was made in decent conditions in this country.

Ditto all of that. You've just reminded me that the Consultant Neurologist I saw last year was very taken with mine and picked them up for closer inspection when I had to remove them so he could examine my feet 🦚😄

No I didn't "know which way this vote was going to go".....

There's always one....and here you are.

How bloody rude! I'll still be wearing my DMs when I'm 80. I honestly think they look cool on everyone.

Pussycat22 · 09/01/2025 08:52

I'm 65 and love mine!!! My ex husband told me and his current wife that we are too old to wear denim. He thinks we should wear crimplene skirts, lisle stockings and sensible shoes. This from a bloke who wears Adidas shorts, tops and trainers !!!!

I've got several pairs of Lanx and love them. Dh wears his all the time.
I also love Docs and my current go to are the Mary Jane's.

Artemis1974 · 29/04/2025 23:48

I’m 51 and nobody can convince me to stop wearing DMs! Even my teenage daughter supports me. So don’t pay attention to people who do no “get you” - whatever the street thinks! 🙂
