To think I'm not "too old to wear Dr martens"...

Just that really.
Told my neighbour (she's mid 30s, I'm 42) that I was looking out for a nice pair of platform dr martens as I've heard the bouncing sole is good for those with back pain (I have sciatica) and she chuckled and said they may be good for my back but not for my street cred as I'd look like mutton dressed as lamb...!
I'm more than a little put out but not put off the idea of docs!
Opinions everyone? Is 42 too old for boots that have been popular with all kinds of different folks since the 1960s?!

My mum is 72 and wears my old school ones, they came from a farm supply company! I've put a photo of my modern ones earlier in the thread, I won't be wearing them in 30 years.

MonkeyRum · 07/01/2025 00:04

What an insipid turd!

im a bit older than you and have 10 pairs.

Growlybear83 · 07/01/2025 00:04

How ridiculous! I'm 67 and I've got three pairs of bright floral DMs.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 07/01/2025 00:05

Tell her to fuck off. Nest question?

I was so taken aback I didn't really know what to say! I just said "Oh I don't think so"....

did she actually say mutton dressed as lamb? I think I’m in my zero tolerance era right now but if she actually said that I’d never speak to her again, I think that term is disgusting. And as for ‘street cred’ who says that?

I would genuinley tell her to fuck off. And I’d feel really good about it!

BitterIwasntfurloughed · 07/01/2025 00:10

You should get 7 pairs of Docs so you can stick a new pair up her rear end each day of the week.

Wear what you want my neighbours in her 60s and wears them and I think shes quite cool!

MaMisled · 07/01/2025 00:10

I'm 58 and just got my first pair!

poemsandwine · 07/01/2025 00:12
  1. They're my favourite. She can go touch grass.
ILoveAnnaQuay · 07/01/2025 00:15

She's being ridiculous.

I'm 58 and love my Doc Martens

SatansBobbleheadedDashboardOrnament · 07/01/2025 00:16

Buy a pair and smoosh around her garden until she comes out to admire your filthy boots.

notacooldad · 07/01/2025 00:17

Ds got me Docs for Christmas to add to my collection.
I am 59.
Wear what ever you want.

Grannyinnwaiting · 07/01/2025 00:18

i'm 60 and wear them!

WonderingWanda · 07/01/2025 00:20

She sounds incredibly rude and incorrect!

Livelovebehappy · 07/01/2025 00:22

I’m in my 50s and wear my Dr Ms to all the gigs I go to (bit of a punk fan), and, shock horror, with a short skirt (but do wear a pair of thickish tights…). I love them.

Winenota · 07/01/2025 00:22

And is she a style icon?

parfaitamour · 07/01/2025 00:28

Gibberish. I wore mine to a bunch of gigs this year after realising my other shoes were not up the job. I've had this pair since 2000. I'm 55.

ThePolarBearWhoLostHisCrown · 07/01/2025 01:15

What a twat. I'm off to ebay to find another pair just to spite her.

RichPetunia · 07/01/2025 01:23

You are never too old for Doc Martens. To be honest, whenever I see someone slightly older wearing them I think it says a lot about their character (independent, individualistic, arty).
Stuff your neighbour and her stupid opinion 😁❄️

StrikeForever · 07/01/2025 01:23

No one is too old for them. I have dodgy feet (arthritis and ruptured Achilles), so don’t wear them because I can’t deal with any footwear that needs breaking in. I do though wear other, softer boots in the same style. I’ll be 66 this year. My plan is to live into my 90s and I’m pretty sure that my taste and style won’t change.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 07/01/2025 01:28

DMs are ageless IMO. It's not like they scream 'Shag me', which must be required for a mutton dressed as lamb comment to be relevant?

Turophilic · 07/01/2025 01:30

Your neighbour isn’t just judgemental, she’s dead wrong, Docs are for any age.

magicstar1 · 07/01/2025 01:43

I'm nearly fifty and have Dr. Martens, Solovair and New Rock boots. Don't listen to her!

EarthyMamma · 07/01/2025 02:57

Don't people say the most idiotic things?

She probably thinks that DMs have only been around for a few years and that they are a fashion item, rather than the enduring style icon of many years.

I don't find the classic DM boot comfortable but love many of the other styles.
I have 6 pairs at the moment. 2 of the pull on fleece lined boots are 20 years old. I must admit I only wear them when it is dry as they leak a little, but I love the style.
Other pairs are 10- 15 years old and still perfect.

OP you must buy a pair and wear them proudly!

Oh, and I am 70 years old.

Newfoundzestforlife · 07/01/2025 05:21

Yup. Those were her words. A feeling of Instant dislike washed over me.
