To think I'm not "too old to wear Dr martens"...

Just that really.
Told my neighbour (she's mid 30s, I'm 42) that I was looking out for a nice pair of platform dr martens as I've heard the bouncing sole is good for those with back pain (I have sciatica) and she chuckled and said they may be good for my back but not for my street cred as I'd look like mutton dressed as lamb...!
I'm more than a little put out but not put off the idea of docs!
Opinions everyone? Is 42 too old for boots that have been popular with all kinds of different folks since the 1960s?!

I'm 38 and I got my first DM's last Christmas. They're my favorite boots and i will be buying more. Your neighbour is a dick.

Eviebeans · 07/01/2025 05:38

I am 62 - have three pairs

NewYearNewDietAgain · 07/01/2025 06:01

I'm nearly 49 and I own 6 pairs! Wear them a lot.

DeathNote11 · 07/01/2025 06:07

I'm mid 50s, I have 12 pairs: 1 thigh high, 2 knee high, 6 ankle, 3 sandals & they are all I ever need & wear. I'm being buried in 1B60s.

Valeriekat · 07/01/2025 06:28

I am 65 and I wear them!

Pigsinblankets13 · 07/01/2025 06:34

Cheeky bitch! I'm early 30s and a) don't think that and b) would never say that to a neighbour! 🫣

Sandandsea123 · 07/01/2025 06:46

I’m 39 and love my dms. All I wear in the winter. My 64 year old mum wears dms and looks great. They are ageless… maybe not the crazy colour ones!!

Northumberlandgirl · 07/01/2025 06:51

I’m 72 next week and am looking at buying my first pair. The only thing that is stalling the purchase is being undecided as to colour.

AWellReadWoman · 07/01/2025 06:51

43 and the proud owner of 5 pairs of DMs. No such thing as too old for DMs.

menopausalmare · 07/01/2025 06:52

I'm 51 and wear mine all the time.

Timble · 07/01/2025 06:55

I’m 44 and I have two pairs of boots, some loafers and sandals. I think dr martens are suitable for any age and I think your neighbour was very rude!!

XWKD · 07/01/2025 06:55

She sounds like she's neurotic about projecting an image. Nobody cares.

Nothungrycat · 07/01/2025 06:58

I'm 63, and one of my best purchases last year was a pair of DM mules, which I've been wearing around the house almost constantly. I also have DM suede boots in a fetching shade of green, which a complete stranger once admired... She's talking rubbish!

foodtoorder · 07/01/2025 07:01

Never too old for DM's.

faffadoodledo · 07/01/2025 07:02

All ages wear them.
If anything it's older people who have the greater claim since we wore them in our youth!

My problem with them is the quality these days. Buy Solovair for better quality (they used to make Doc soles before DM shipped out to the Middle East). Plus I think the detailing on Solovair is better. They also don't scream ubiquitous brand. But yeah - quality quality quality... go for that but with a similar look to DMs.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 07/01/2025 07:03

Of course people in their 50s and 60s wear DMs.

They're very nearly broken in by now.

WoahThreeAces · 07/01/2025 07:03

Lol, firstly I hate the "too old to wear" anything really! Wear what you want!

But DMs aren't a young person fashion... I would say they are definitely favoured by older people!
They were for young people in the 90s, and now worn by people who were young people in the 90s 😂

I have several pairs, I'm late 40s. I definitely consider them to be the fashion of people my age, not young and trendy at all! I'd be surprised to see them on teenagers or folk in their 20s.

KeepinOn · 07/01/2025 07:04

I grew up wearing grunge style clothes, I will never feel too old to wear docs.

CaptainMyCaptain · 07/01/2025 07:06

Ignore her

AmusedMaker · 07/01/2025 07:10

I associate DM’s with the older generation tbh.

ignore her. I’m 61 & have had a few pairs over the years, I started to find them a bit uncomfortable though.

aCatCalledFawkes · 07/01/2025 07:11

I’m 46yrs and have just brought my fist pair of DMs since my teenage years.
Spent December going in to the London office in cheap boots and decided I needed to do better as my feet were next burning. I can’t wait to wear them out. So far they feel very great.

StoorieHoose · 07/01/2025 07:13

Who cares what she thinks is. Get the DMs!

whiteroseredrose · 07/01/2025 07:13

Good grief. They are sensible boots. Ignore the fool.

Winterskyfall · 07/01/2025 07:14

You aren't too old at 42, she sounds unpleasant and ageist. Doc Martens have been around forever, they aren't limited to a specific demographic. I wore them 25 years ago and if I wanted to wear them now I would.
