Absolutely shit scared about the future in the UK?

Name changed - I’m genuinely terrified by the hate, division and atmosphere here right now, online and spilling over on the ‘the real world’. I’m scared by how quickly things are changing, and just how much influence the US/Elon Musk/Reform+supporters are having. I’m scared of what the actual point of it all is - what’s the endgame? And what’s the solution? Why is no one protesting/rising up from the other way? Do people generally agree with all this?

I’m in no way a minority (white, female, 30s), I’m not super left, I have one little boy and I’m so scared for his future. I don’t want to live somewhere so intolerant with this constant atmosphere of distrust and something getting ready to blow.

What’s the general consensus? Is this what the people of the U.K. want?

I have no sense of this at all in my real life or anywhere in the UK. Most people are moderate and lean to a more conservative outlook.
I would like to see Labour address immigration, security and social care in a robust manner, so we continue to live in a comfortable consensus without any concern for extremism from either side.

I blame them there is no excuse for racism

That’s the problem.
When anyone tries to discuss things the cry of “racism” goes up.

baroqueandblue · 04/01/2025 21:02

So they let the children be raped.

You've got some nerve. The rapists let those children be raped. Responsibility for their despicable crimes begins and ends with them. I don't know how you can come on here pretending to be concerned about those poor children when actually all you're doing is using their plight to further your own nasty agenda.

For shame.

Dymaxion · 04/01/2025 21:02

I think it started with the release of the details of what mounammed Karrar did to that little girl. It was graphic and sickening and Musk came across it and was quite naturally like WTF

Wasn't the trial 6 years ago ? When the Conservatives were in power ?

IvyOrangesCandles · 04/01/2025 21:02

As the mother of an 11 year old girl I'm more scared somehow a rapist, murdering torture gang could get their claws into her and I won't be able to save her because I would be arrested, my husband would be arrested even if she was found naked, drunk with a group of adult males age 11. That's what's fucking scary op.

Dymaxion · 04/01/2025 21:07

@IvyOrangesCandles Do you think that is what would happen now if you went to the Police ? Do you think that even with various inquires/changes in the way this type of crime is seen etc that what happened in the past would still happen today ?

I think AI is coming whether we like it or not. It’s simple to me, build more houses, restrain immigration to genuinely highly skilled people and reduce numbers, build more prisons and actually convict people when they do bad shit.

I will vote for you

greengreyblue · 04/01/2025 21:08

Everywhere has its problems. I love the U.K.

Veronay · 04/01/2025 21:09

When the economy is bad people are always more uncooperative/ nasty. The opposite is true, people are nice when life is easy and they don't have to struggle as much. Really what the UK needs is something to offer the wooed that's actually worth buying, but no one seems willing to invest in anything long term like that.

So how many protests have you been on OP?

greengreyblue · 04/01/2025 21:11

I’m just glad we have a Labour government and hope they can start to repair the shocking public services. Neither party is perfect though. I just try to be a good person and I see lots of good around me.

What is a murdering torture gang going to be anywhere near her?I’d be more scared about her online activity. Far more more likelihood of her being groomed and abused online.

Why aren't you protesting, OP? Chances are that other people might share your reasons.

Can you be more specific in what you think we should all be protesting about?

Don't think anybody will be allowed to say on here ... radicalised islamists, killing children and others in tge name of their religion.

Tommytoronto · 04/01/2025 18:36

I just got back from travelling (Toronto and San Francisco) and landed at Gatwick - never felt so happy and relaxed to be home.

The UK isn’t that bad. I really recommend seeing the world so you know how “alright” it is here.

I felt safe immediately. No opiod crisis, no worry of guns, no car jacking and the M25 was cleaner than Toronto’s posh financial district at 7am! (When you’d expect a street to be at its cleanest!)

Everywhere has its issues.

What about the young girls stabbed to death by a Welsh man (maker of ricin, with Al quaeda book, islamic terrorist)

User37482 · 04/01/2025 21:25

Oh also Farage and reform have never come up on twitter for me either. Don’t follow people obsessed with these people and you will never see them crop up ever.

The establishment in this country are sick and they all protect each other.

Now they're scared of Elon Musk.

TempestTost · 04/01/2025 21:49

I can't believe people think they are going to get away from the problems they are mentioning by going to Europe!

Katemax82 · 04/01/2025 21:50

Newsenmum · 04/01/2025 18:27

Is it really that bad? Surely it just depends where you live? No country is perfect. Imagine living in Afghanistan right now.

Exactly...the hate and intolerance out there towards women is inhumane

i think its worth a go and we can always come back to The Uk if not

Allswellthatendswelll · 04/01/2025 22:08

Haven't read the whole thread as I don't want to be also plunged into a doom spiral but honestly OP I would just get off social media (I know MN is social media but you can just not engage with the politics threads). Especially X which is just so toxic and full of people who are very "online".

We have just been to France and the problems there are worse if anything.

What you're seeing is a symptom, not really a thing in and of itself.

Redrosesposies · 04/01/2025 18:23

I'm scared too. Scared of how much damage this Labour government can do in 4/5 years.

Yep. They’ve certainly made a pigs ear of it already and they are just getting started.

CoralHare · 04/01/2025 22:14

YANBU, I have an autistic child and it absolutely terrifies me. DH and I are FT working professionals but our whole lives could be turned upside down if our son’s specialist school or bus to school are removed. It seems the right have had to give up on refugees as the scapegoats and have now turned on disabled children.

Even 10 years ago this would have been seen as totally beyond the pale and abhorrent. Now every day I read more terrifying nonsense about SEND children and their families, including from the leader of the Conservative Party. I have no doubt that unless we change the election rules Elon Musk will buy the next election and basically turn us into a terrible place for anyone with any kind of vulnerability. It will be super rich ruling the country for the super rich and everyone else will be living in the scraps.
