Absolutely shit scared about the future in the UK?

Name changed - I’m genuinely terrified by the hate, division and atmosphere here right now, online and spilling over on the ‘the real world’. I’m scared by how quickly things are changing, and just how much influence the US/Elon Musk/Reform+supporters are having. I’m scared of what the actual point of it all is - what’s the endgame? And what’s the solution? Why is no one protesting/rising up from the other way? Do people generally agree with all this?

I’m in no way a minority (white, female, 30s), I’m not super left, I have one little boy and I’m so scared for his future. I don’t want to live somewhere so intolerant with this constant atmosphere of distrust and something getting ready to blow.

What’s the general consensus? Is this what the people of the U.K. want?

Why aren't you protesting, OP? Chances are that other people might share your reasons.

Can you be more specific in what you think we should all be protesting about?

MissAmbrosia · 04/01/2025 18:23

I think these people have no real influence over anything and it's just bigged up by media/social media. What do you see in your day to day life? Are people still nice, going about their daily lives? I agree there's a lot of work to be done to improve housing/NHS etc but I lot of the shit being spread about is from far right agitators who are best ignored.

Redrosesposies · 04/01/2025 18:23

I'm scared too. Scared of how much damage this Labour government can do in 4/5 years.

iwishihadaname · 04/01/2025 18:24

I agree with op I wish my family could leave

JDNCh · 04/01/2025 18:26

@NeverGuessWho the rise of the far right? After the summer riots, there were plenty of counter protests and what felt like some hope. It doesn’t feel like that any more to me.

and you’re right, why don’t I? Probably because I have a toddler, work full time, I am knackered and I am scared and it feels ineffective against a billionaire with influence. But you’re right, sitting on my arse anxiously checking the news won’t help - but genuinely what can be done? I don’t think a traditional protest is what this requires.

Do you really think it's much better elsewhere?

There is a lot of division, trouble and escalating financial issues across Europe. USA women are denied access to abortion and serious health issues can make you bankrupt very quickly.

Bigcheeserolling · 04/01/2025 18:27

Ironically (posting on here) I feel much more positive if I get off SM, listen to the news no more than once a day and try to engage with with people in my neighbourhood about local things. Feel much better about society and people in general.

MidnightPatrol · 04/01/2025 18:27

I think social media has become extremely toxic and is increasingly a force for bad, rather than good.

Elon Musk and his interfering…yes, it’s bad, and the power of such interference is concerning.

But - the whole platform is like that. I used to enjoy reading twitter and now all the content is racism, sexism, pornographic etc.

I’m not sure how much real influence they have though - or is it just noise. Outside of Twitter I’m not sure anyone is paying much attention.

I think the bigger challenge for the UK is that we are becoming a poor country and no one is really doing anything about this. Being able to afford a home, a family, a comfortable standard of living, retirement - all looking increasingly unlikely for younger people and the next generation. That is very concerning IMO.

Dearg · 04/01/2025 18:27

Reform / the Right are in opposition now. As such , it is their job to,provide a counter point to the Labour held Government. They are making noise, but they are not in power .

They possibly feel encouraged by the incoming Trump presidency, and like taking ideas from his playbook.

Elon Musk is a man who likes to share his opinions, as many do. He has a wide reaching platform on which to do this, most of us don’t have that.

I think my point is, it’s noise , but I don’t think it influences the majority in the UK.

Newsenmum · 04/01/2025 18:27

Is it really that bad? Surely it just depends where you live? No country is perfect. Imagine living in Afghanistan right now.

Newsenmum · 04/01/2025 18:28

I don’t think a labor government is particularly scary. The majority of the country voted in a labour government. I think that’s pretty telling.

Yes absolutely!! on the whole, I think in ‘real life’ things are okay.

However, my brother had homophobic graffiti on his house after 20yrs + in the same place in London and I think that has really rattled me that it’s come ‘off the internet’ and we’re seeing this huge regression in attitudes.

My husband is generally very level headed about these things but he’s had a serious conversation with me today about what we do if this gets worse and where we could see ourselves going. That’s scared me too.

I’m a bit scared that we have loads of institutions that are more worried about pissing people off than locking up child rapists tbh. That really fucking concerns me. Not what Musk is twattering on about. The problem is that there is a problem not that someone pointed it out,

hedgehogsinthehedgerow · 04/01/2025 18:30

The UK has gone downhill since Brexit but at least we've now had an election and have a government getting on with things for a few years. The USA situation is concerning but we're better off in the UK. Get out in nature or read a book, or whatever gives you peace.

Quite, I think some perspective is needed here.

hedgehogsinthehedgerow · 04/01/2025 18:31

There do seem to be a lot of right wing bots on here these days which I'm sure is helping no-one.

JDNCh · 04/01/2025 18:32

@User37482 there are huge problems in the UK and globally. But I don’t believe for one second that any one associated with Musk genuinely cares about fixing that.

I live in west Yorks and yes I absolutely know the extent of the issue, and the problems at the time - I was at school in Dewsbury. But aligning yourself with Trump etc and then attempting to meddle in that does not smack of genuine concern for women and girls or the U.K. does it.

Totally agree. It’s like the atmosphere of the whole internet has changed - it feels even more isolating.

I am doing my best to do that and not panic about what’s beyond my control but it is bloody difficult!

That’s very sad about your brother and I hope family members reached out to him unlike family members who ignore racism to mix members of family

I doubt there's many Jewish people in the UK who haven't had that conversation in the last year or so.
