What are people doing to their faces?!

Mania89 · 03/01/2025 23:27

I am mid 30s. Colour my hair, wear makeup, thread my eyebrows etc so not completely natural but my goodness what are people doing to their faces?! Young women who are beautiful now have so much injected into their faces that they cannot move them at all. I was looking back at photos in my mid 20s and was wondering why on earth did I worry about my looks at all. Hindsight is wonderful! And I am despairing that girls younger than this have already started to inject Botox and fillers. The world is going mad and don’t even get me started on weight loss injections for those who are not clinically obese! I have two daughters and really feel so worried for them up.

Don't even mention the lips that are so big they can't close their mouths or speak properly and they have to keep on licking their lips because they constantly 'dry out'?! WTAF?! 😱

There was a woman who had to quit her job because of her lip fillers. Some of her patients with hearing difficulties couldn’t read her lips anymore.

A TA at my sons last school had to be moved room due to this, he has a hearing impairment and couldn’t lip read from her. They weren’t extreme either

I have no problem with beauty enhancements on the whole. There is nothing wrong with having procedures to make yourself feel better and I'm not a stranger to them. I'm having LASIK next week, a very very common procedure just so I no longer have to wear glasses. Surely that counts as cosmetic right?

However, I do believe beauty enhancements should be just that - enhancing your natural beauty. A little more defined, a little more smooth etc. what I do not like is where people have so much filler and wear so much make up that they are completely unrecognisable without it. Then you just become a clone and loose your beautiful uniqueness.

I remember my Grandma giving me a lecture on how ageing makeup is. I thought she meant "makes you look older" [whilst you're wearing it].

I then realised she meant that it ages your skin, especially lipstick apparently. I rarely wear makeup and the 90s nude look seems to have done huge favours to those old enough.

The younger generations seem to be ageing much faster and I'm convinced it's related to putting on super thick makeup with loads of contouring and masses of eyeshadow.

And I agree - they do seem to have the desire to replicate filters by using fillers as well as makeup. I also felt like I had a huge butt as a teen. Now I look at people who've had butt fillers and realise that my butt was probably quite an attractive feature and that I have a miniscule butt by modern standards 😂

You do know you don't have to share every mundane, hateful or irrelevant thought that passes through your head you know? It's perfectly possible to keep your opinions to yourself instead of starting entire threads dedicated them.

What about this opinion of yours you shared a couple of months ago? Why didn’t you keep it to yourself? It’s not very nice.

Anotherparkingthread · 12/11/2024 00:43

I couldn't date somebody who was obese. Sorry. I don't find it attractive at all. I eat very little and the amount of eating somebody would need to do to maintain that level of weight I would also find quite revolting,

TOUCHE 👏… that’s way past the ‘opinion’ stage… that’s downright nastiness coming from @Anotherparkingthread

How can you even tell… obviously the excessive ones but…. If you don’t know someone how do you know their lips have changed? Wouldn’t be surprised if people think I’ve had them… I never have!

They don't usually look natural.

Anyone who injects needs to have a registered nursing license and must also be operating under the supervision of a physician in my country. In order to do Botox you have take anatomy of facial muscles. When you learn you need to know exactly what muscle you are targeting other wise you can cause drooling and unwanted stuff.

Not exactly true in the UK. Anyone can inject Botox but only medical professionals with a qualification that allows them to prescribe can write out the prescription. They are risking their professional registration if something goes wrong though.
Plenty of unqualified practitioners get round this. I suspect that the regulations for insurance are also flouted as well. They rely on their general business insurance which is unlikely to cover them.

Indemnity insurance for medical practitioners is separate from general third party insurance. If I was to offer Botox or fillers it would add several thousand pounds to my yearly insurance. I currently pay £1600 a year to work for one day a week. Even if I only did a handful of injectables a month my indemnity costs would increase by 2-4k.

I suppose if you are the prescriber to multiple injectors it would be worth the extra cost.
I would be suspicious of anyone charging heavily discounted prices since it may suggest they are sourcing Botox or fillers illegally.
I have reliable intel that a local aesthetician buys cheap filler and decants it into the expensive ( advertised ) containers. This is both fraudulent and highly dangerous since it immediately contaminates the filler.
There are some despicable practices going on.

Knowledge of anatomy is the least of your problems. Next time you have Botox ask the practitioner to name the 40 odd muscles that control facial expression, they are just the surface muscles. Below the cutaneous layer there are some serious muscles that if paralysed will interfere with eating, speach and potentially swallowing and maintaining your airway. Not to mention the extensive and complicated system of blood vessels and nerves. It’s very easy to permanently damage nerves using needles. The face is one of the most interacted part of the body, the lips are probably the most unnerved and complex unit.

I had hearing problems when very young which led to me developing a problem with processing speach. Although I can’t lip read I need to be able to see someone’s face when they speak to me. I can clearly hear what they say but without the visual information, facial expression such as raised eyebrows when asking a question ( it’s subtle but always there) I often fail to process the speech.

Mask wearing caused me a lot of problems particularly with botoxed faces, the eyebrows are a unique mammalian method of communication along with eyes. My sister anx I can have a complete conversation using our eyebrows.

I noticed that women’s faces really confused me. It’s like they have the constant resting bitch face and I misread the smile. A genuine smile includes the area around the eyes, a forced smile doesn’t. We subconsciously monitor minute facial movements to judge and interpret interactions. And we very much judge people as a result of this. It took me a while to understand why I was misjudging the intentions of some people I know, until I realised that they had Botox.

@pollymere those who have always worn make-up look markedly younger amongst my peers. Sun protection.

It’s everyone’s business when women, en masse, from a progressively young age are receiving the message that what a human looks like is not good enough and pummels their self esteem.

despite your insistence and persuasive text, its a still a no from me. Mind your own. While I agree they look ridiculous it’s not my business.

Isabellivi · 06/01/2025 05:12

The truth is if you can tell they have stuff done then they aren’t going to a good injector. It’s a bit like make up, in that a good lrqctitioner will enhance your beauty, not overrun it.

You are only noticing the bottom tier of med aesthetics. Plenty of people look very natural, and they are 50-80 year olds who look 20 years younger. You just wouldn’t know they had anything done.

I don’t believe that for a minute. If a woman of 50 thinks she looks 30 because of some “work” - it just goes to prove the level of delusion she is harbouring! In fact, sometimes it has the opposite effect. It’s ageing and “weirding”.

Other times they have what I can only call, a “confused” look. Their faces are stretched but the skin is still a reflection of their true age as are their eyes and other aspects of their visage. So they often end up just looking strange. A knowledgeable person will recognise the ‘confusion’ is simply created by the filler/Botox. An unknowledgable person will just be puzzled. And to what aim and purpose is all this intended? I have no idea. Is it so that some random man or a DH wants to shag you ? Is it because you can fool random people as to your age? 😵‍💫

AllMoby · 06/01/2025 17:06

Angrymum22 · 06/01/2025 03:54

The filler migrates into the surrounding tissues and distorted whole area. Repeated injection into the lip damages the blood supply through scarring and the lips lose there natural colour. This happens quite quickly, if you’ve seen any videos of it being done you’ll understand why.
It’s no coincidence that the latest fad is to have a semi permanent stain/colour done. Yet more money lining the pockets of the “technician”. But the beauty industry is modelled around trends so will be making as much money as possible until the “wind changes”.
Once you stop filling them with filler they will be like deflated ballons. The skin is quite thin in the lip it’s. not like the thick skin over the rest of the face
I I suppose the next stage will be a “lip lift” similar to a tummy tuck to stop you dribbling when you lower lip flops down to your chin and no one can understand what you are saying.

Scary stuff.

On the contrary, having a considered view, shows signs of human consciousness and awareness. To have no view on anything is to put yourself on the level of an amoeba doh!

Of course one doesn’t have to have opinions about everything, and one doesn’t have to have the same opinions as other people - but particularly as MN is generally an forum for sharing views and opinions, I wonder what you are doing here therefore? Perhaps it is you that can find nothing else to do with your time except scold people for having an opinion (that differs from yours I suspect - hence the sensitivity and attempt to shut such opinions down !!!!)

Exactly. When does 'minding your own business' become ignoring something quite worrying.

Maybe expressing an opinion that the trend for fillers in very young women carries risks of long term damage, and is not particularly appealing to look at, might give young women the knowledge and support to help them reject any pressure to submit to it because 'everyone is doing it'.

I remember when my niece was about 18yrs old, and she was going on about how my daughter would probably be like all the other girls after starting secondary school. Now my niece is a replica of all the other young women (in their 20s), wearing an absolute ton of makeup, massive false eyelashes and wearing practically nothing (and no, I'm not exaggerating at all) when clubbing or DJing at DnB gigs, and does pole dancing "for the exercise", but wears erotic pole dancing outfits and those clear "hooker" platform stilletos. My daughter on the other hand, is now nearly 19yrs old, and dresses absolutely nothing like most girls these days, preferring 1980s boys fashion and 1980s SKA fashion

Quite the opposite. I reject others attempt to persuade me to their view. While I can respect it, I am strong enough to not be fooled into others way of thinking. Your opinion of me is none of my business, it’s also inaccurate thanks anyway.

You are very insistent and dogmatic re your 'mind your business' theory which I'm sorry to have to say is a very limited and cliched attitude not leaving any opportunity for subjective opinion or intelligent debate on the interesting, complex and relatively controversial subject!
It's also, in my opinion, narrow minded and more than a little boring?! 🙄
