I know this will be unpopular but I think it needs to be said.
Before I say it, please note: yes the crime was rape, yes the police should have done more, yes the poor girls were vulnerable and taken advantage of, yes the whole thing was disgusting and yes I think there was an element of police and social workers being too afraid of being accused of being racist.
BUT… I think SOME of the problem was due to the attitude prevalent among social workers at the time that teenagers (and yes I know some of the poor victims weren’t even old enough to be called teenagers) should be allowed to make their own "lifestyle choices". I was told this by a SW when I reported how a young teenager kept bunking off school to go and have sex with (white) men. I was also told that there was nothing they could do to stop teenagers in care from choosing to leave their children’s home or foster carers every evening to go to the homes of these men (who the girls naively thought were their boyfriends but who were really rapist abusers) "because we’re not allowed to lock them up so we can’t stop them going out if they choose to".
Don’t shoot the messenger.
I hope something has changed.
